Nokia's CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo
Nokia said it was 'encouraged' by its profitability and managed to strengthen its market leading position in Q1 2007, despite dips in both net sales and profitability for the mobile phones division.

Mobile phone division sales fell 5% to €5.6bn (£3.8bn) compared to the same quarter in 2006. Operating profit for the segment slumped 14% over the year to €936m (£636m). The figure includes restructuring charges.

During the quarter, Nokia shipped 91.1 million units, including mobile phones and multimedia and enterprise solution devices, up 21% compared to Q1 2006 but down 14% on the previous three months.

The company made the first shipments of the Nokia 6300, expanded its music phone offering with the Nokia 5700 and the Nokia 5070, and introduced the Nokia 7373 Special Edition.

Profitability was hit by a fall in average selling prices from €103 to €89 due to competition and Nokia's push for market share. The business said it had an estimated device market share of 36%, up from 35% last year, helped by new handsets which gave Nokia the edge on rival Motorola.

A spokesman said: 'Nokia is comfortably the number one. This is no surprise. We have strength in range.'

Nokia's own converged device volumes rose to 11.8 million units, compared with 8.5 million units in the first quarter 2006. Nokia shipped close to eight million Nokia Nseries and more than one million Nokia Eseries devices during the first quarter 2007.

Mobile device volumes in Europe increased 17.7% to 23.9 million units.
