i want to know what the battery life is like most importantly :)

As the n95s out I think all discussion should be moved here instead of the release date thread.

So far though from what ive been reading by early adopters is that battery life is quite acceptable. Light use gets 2 days of usage. Not bad really.

Theres a nice video sample by good old Steve Garfield at WOM.

Although strangley there area lot of people reviewing the phone when they dont even have it, the complaints seem typical of a high end nokia device.

In short the usual suspects.

Poor vibrate
buggy software
poor camera (this was always known before hand Nokias dont concentrate on imaging)
Poor bettery

I just hope when I come to get this in a few months that these problems have been dealt with.

Judgin by the overuse of the caps lock key, and overall grammar, I wouldn't worry about that site's comments!

I'm waiting for the mobile-review.com review personally.

christ, they are pretty good quality!
for the average person wanting to take a few shots now and then, its perfect!

take some tonight in a dark place and use the flash, i hope its better than my old Nokia N80 camera which was only 3.2 megapixels, but had horrid grainy pics at night..

I think its improved slightly but also there is an option as on the n93i to use the flash as a torch, which can come in handy sometimes.

Here's a simple one...

Is it faster?

The N80 seemed massively delayed sometimes.

31-03-2007, 06:18 PM
No, the camera is slow. This is from reviews and other posts on here.
First it has to auto focus on the object. Then another few seconds for saving the image.

Thats correct.
When you use other things for internet connection it asks you what to use and then you get the TMobile WnW option as well.

Been having a few glitches with the browser. When I've tried to check hotmail it goes to the log in screen but then when I click to sign in it just hangs there and doesn't get any further. Same thing happens on the WLAN and GPRS connection. Anyone else having a similar issue?

dannyr7
31-03-2007, 09:22 PM
hi, im also part of the phone study group who received a free n95.

firstly, no, the sliding doesnt end a call or web session, nor does it affect any application.

i expected a lot from this phone, and it is impressive. however id be sadly dissapointed if nokia havnt got a fireware update to sort out some teething issues

as you all know im sure, the n95 trys to be intuitive and rotate the display as it feels necessary, notably when you slide the face down to access the multimedia buttons.
its good when you want it to be, but when you slide the phone back up, or go to use another application the screen remains at 90 degrees to the normal. if there was a dedicated button to flip the screen instantly that would be fine. but there isnt, and so it becomes rather tedious to sort the screen out. one shortcut ive found is that by sliding the phone up (to expose the keypad) it flips the screen straight back to portrait, but isnt exactly ideal.

also the GPS isnt great.. i dont have much experience with things such as 'tom tom' so im not sure now long they take to access a satelite, but my phone takes at least 2 minutes, and doesnt track my movement that closely. it seems to refresh its position every 20 seconds or so, and tracks me by jumping from point to point, rather that fluently tracking my path.

also ive found the wifi isnt that solid. we have wireless broadband throughout the house, and ive found the n95 finds and logs onto the network fine, but after about 4/5 mins of browsing just refuses to load up any more webpages. possibly more a browser issue.

oh, and did i mention its crashed about 6 times in the 48 hours ive had it?!

does anyone else have these same problems? i really hope nokia release some software/firmware update to sort this out.. these are going for about £500 on ebay, and i wouldnt be happy paying that sort of money for this as it is.

buckeye

Ye, duz sliding the screen down end calls and stuff?

Sliding doesn't end the call.

The web'n'walk icon is basically the Nokia browser.

The phone is very responsive outside of things such as the multimedia menu/camera.

EDIT: danny beat me to some of that and in much more detail hehe.

danny, I haven't had it crash on me once, I'm just getting a high pitched whining through the caller speaker during phonecalls (actually all the time, but only noticable when close to ear).

MasterSilk

Mine has crashed several times but only when the browser has hung up on me.

ratkat
31-03-2007, 10:33 PM
The browser hangs for the same reason the N80 browser did (and does) the phone doesn't have enough operating ram, approx 21mb at startup, and as proved with the N80, a firmware upgrade can't make up for a lack of ram.

The more you surf the net on it the more ram it uses until it runs out and gives a out of memory error, locks up or shuts the browser.

I have to say the N95 is a bit of a let down in that way, you would have thought that Nokia would have learnt its lesson with the N80 and increased the amount of ram to a sensible amount, this one thing would solve most of the problems.

MasterSilk
01-04-2007, 07:28 AM
I'm interested to know if anyone else is having major browser issues. When mine does hang sometimes it locks up, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't and I'm able to exit back to the standby screen the wifi connection appears to stay live, the symbol is there anyway. When I go into connection manager it locks up when I try to view the active data connections. Holding the red button does take me back to the standy screen again from there I can use other applications like going into the music player without any problem. I can even hold down the menu key and toggle between applications except for the still open connection manager. When I select it the whole lot locks again. Now if no one else is having this issue maybe I have got a dodgy one.

Thank you Waynesters. I'm on Virgin Mobile which uses the T-Mobile network. I have to say that, unlike some other N80 owners, I never experienced too many problems and even managed to upgrade mine ti Internet Edition with Pc Suite about 3/4 weeks ago. Thanks to forums like this I would hope and believe that Nokia have improved on a lot of the things we have all mentioned about the N series.

It sounds louder to me through the headphones. Have done a test using the same song, Bad to the Bone, which is identical on both phones.
The N95 has 2 speakers, one either side of the phone and to my tin ear I thinks it sounds a better quality even without headphones.

I was gutted to read that ratkat. You could only have had the N95 a matter of hours and already want rid of it?

Seriously is the web browsing that bad? I had an N80 and the browser hung all the time, but my E61 never hangs. If the N95 is as bad as the N80 I am very disappointed.

If one buys the Crystal Case: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/11854.htm is it also worth buying the Martin Fields Overlay Plus Screen Protector: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/12840.htm ?

Indeed, is it suitable to apply the Martin Fields protector directly onto the LCD screen, given that there is no hard cover over it?

Indeed, given that the lens already has its own mechanical cover, is additionally applying a plastic screen protector worth it? (This question also applies to any product with a mechanical lens cover e.g. most digital cameras).

So I have had 2 N95s due to one being faulty. Here is a really strange difference. When you are using the camera, and you press the shutter button half way to get a focus lock, on one of them, you get a click sound once you have the focus lock, but on the other, it is silent! They both make a noise when actually taking the picture.

I know this is a subtle thing, but thought it odd the two were different.

Same too, just received my second N95 due to the first being faulty. Thankfully this one doesn't like to make a whining noise through the speaker, which frankly I was beginning to worry was in all of them and I was just getting paranoid about every aspect of the phone. :alien:

I get the focus click on the one I am using now, my new one is still charging.

I haven't been able to get the GPS to lock on to any satellite at all yet. Think I must have a faulty handset, otherwise everything else seems fine.
Have not had any browser issues, and there is a ton of ram in this phone so don't see why that would be the problem.
It is a little bit more buggy than my n73, but otherwise okay. Two crashes in 3 days.

I might be pointing out something obvious as mine doesn't arrive till tomorrow.

However on the nokia demo site it says that the GPS receiver is underneath the key pad, so you need it open it to get the best signal.

I received mine from T Mobile this morning, second time lucky!

Does anyone else have a bit of loose movement in the slider when the phone is closed? The right hand slider on mine seems to be a bit loose and so when preesing the nav keys etc particularly on the RHS of the phone, you can feel it moving underneath and almost get a two stage click type sensation when pressing a button. Its OK when the keypad is extended though, and the left hand slide seems much more solid.

I'm exchanging my handset tomorrow. I left it sitting outside with the handset open for 30 minutes, and it didn't lock so think it's a handset issue. Also have a high pitched whine on the calls, so all in all time for a change. Credit to t-mobile, no problems with exchanging and they will do it all tomorrow morning. Well, I've had my N95 since Saturday morning and i have to say that I am very impressed but also a little disappointed at the same. After having had a sharp phone for the last 3 years (GX30, 902 and 903) I was reluctant to get another Nokia but the Specifications on the N95 just made it irresistible.

It's has to be said that it is a stunning device to look at right from the word go, when you lift the lid on the box and see it sitting there with a plastic case over it to protect it you almost don't want to take it out!!! When you do finally get to hold the N95 you say to yourself - Yes, this was worth the wait!

It's smaller and lighter than i ever thought it was going to be and a noticeable amount lighter than my Sharp 903. The sliding mechanism works really smooth and also gives a nice little clicking sound when it's fully opened. The one problem i see here is that when you open the slide to view the screen in landscape form it stays in landscape when you close the phone again, maybe not a problem but just a little annoyance.

The Wireless LAN feature on the N95 works like a charm, i set it up to use my home wireless connection using WPA security and thats it, whenever i am at home now it just connects straight away and browsing the net on a phone with a 10mb home broadband connection is just ridiculously fast but very useful for uploading photos to Flickr or videos to YouTube. I did this using ShoZu (http://www.shozu.com) as apposed to using the built in Flickr uploader.

Next, The GPS, This feature is one of the main features allot of people have been waiting for myself included and i just couldn't wait to load up the Maps software and see that Google Earth like map on the screen. It worked first time, it found where i was and zoomed straight into me i was impressed. But, having said that it didn't work when i tried it again ten minutes later, it appeared dead i just couldn't get it to receive a GPS signal. I went and sat in the middle of my garden for ten minutes and it still hadn't located me!! Last night i tried again this time while walking to the pub(about a 5 minute journey) I thought I'd show off this unique feature to a friend, was i wasting my time? we were nearly at the pub before it got a signal.

Nokia seriously need to release a firmware for this problem as one of the main selling points of the phone is next to useless and a big disappointment.

The TV-Out feature works excellent and i was impressed by the quality of the A/V cable that was included with the phone. Playing System Rush on a big widescreen TV just blows you away, you have to pinch yourself and remind yourself that this is your phone.

Then theres the camera, 5 megapixels of pure Carl Zeiss joy, the images are amazing and good enough to make anyone shout "5 MEGAPIXELS IN A PHONE?" I see no real nead to carry a compact round now. it is a shame theres no optical zoom though like the 903 and it does take a few seconds to save the images but anyone whos owned a 903 will sure be able to live with that.

So, the Nokia N95 doesn't come without a problem or two but they are only little ones that will hopefully get ironed out over the coming months and despite the problems i'm going to stick with it, the signal in my area is good (T-Mobile UK) and like i said at the start the phones looks just make you want it let alone the features.

I just recieved my n95 today, I also am hearing the high pitch whining sound as well, it quite uncomfortable when making calls, the noise is comming from the screen as I can hear it when I put my ear to the screen even when I am not in a call, does anyone else suffer from this? is it worth me replacing the handset?

Loving it. Didnt really like the Vodafone Branding, so I bought a Sim free one from CPW. Much better. Im not tied to anything now! How is everyone getting on with theirs? I cant seem to find the experience the N95 thread..

I havent got any of the whining sounds, as for the mp3 player it's surprisingly good when paired with my shures.

My only issue that irritates me on all nokia series 60 is not being able to store pictures and vids in different folders

My GPS is working perfectly. I downloaded the maps overnight for England and Florida (as I'm off to Miami in a few weeks), using a card reader connected to my laptop. It reportedly took about an hour and a half, compared to the 8+ hours when I tried to do it via my N95 using wi-fi. The GPS found my location before I even left the house and tracked my position all the way both to and from work.

I've had on average a couple of crashes/reboots a day until today. This morning I connected it to my desktop via bluetooth and it continually crashed and rebooted until I disconnected the bluetooth dongle on my desktop. I think I shall stick to using the USB cable for sync operations, to be on the safe side.

It also crashed twice when I was showing it off to my neighbours and was trying to take a photo of them.

The MP3 player is fab, and the addition of the inline remote makes it fully usable, the lack of one with the N80 made me use my iRiver instead. The volume is pretty good too, I have it on 80% right now and that's fine. I guess the real test will come when I'm out and about, specifically on the underground. I used the Nokia Music Manager to transfer some MP3s and converted them to MP4A on the way, even though it's only 48k I'm honestly surprised at how good they sound.

Mine's also got the high pitched whine I can hear, seemingly from the top right hand corner of the screen near the earpiece / VGA camera. Its certainly related to the screen being on because in power save / screensaver mode, its silent. :(

So does it play mp3s much louder than the N80? I always thought the sound on the N80 was a bit weak...

I think that there must be some faulty handsets out there. There always will be, but sounds like you guys have no problems exchanging them. I have tried the Vodafone branded one - no probs and I use an unbranded one.. No problems... then again they MAY occur later. But i reboot my phone often, so the crashing MIGHT not be an issue? Who knows. I have not really ventured in to the Sat nav as yet. Prob because VODA will charge a fortune.. Any way of downloading maps free as Im going to Mauritius and Dubai in a month again.

Yes there always will be faulty handsets around. This is common not just with Nokia, many makes have this problem.

Not sure about downloading maps for free. I read some prices on another site of maps for different countries but am trying to find it for you. Ill keep you posted...

I thought the maps are free. You only pay for city guides or voice navigation.
The real issue is that it will download the maps over your data connection and the data part is the expensive issue, unless you are with T-mobile...which is why I moved to them for this phone.

Tried the GPS this morning, I also have a bluetooth GPS dongle and whenever I had Bluetooth GPS ticked as an option it didnt seem to want to also use the internal GPS, even though that was also ticked. I ticked it so that it could only use GPS and left it on the passenger seat whilst driving in to work this morning and within a few minutes it had picked up a fix, so those that are having problems it might be worth ensuring yours is also only set to use the integrated GPS. The setting is in Tools - GPS Data - Options - Positioning Options, making sure only integrated GPS is ticked.

Thanks BavLondon. Appreciate it. Does anyone know how much the data downloads cost with Voda?

Ian could I ask which particular tv application it is and is where you can obtain it?

thanks
It's called Vimio TV and is a free download. It has about 5/6 staions, including Sky News and RTE. I run it on wifi. Download here

The phone back is coated in some sort of rubberised material. I notice from new, that mine has a couple of tiny tiny little imperfections in it that you can just see or feel with the finger.

Anyway, what I am worried about, is if this will be like the Psion 5, where you put it in your pocket which causes it to rub against the material in your pocket, and over some time, it starts to peel off!

Have had a 'home page' corruption when using wnw. Factory reset cured it and kept all installed apps, menu settings and contacts.
Opera works really well as does yell.com mobile.
The hsdpa connection is brilliant and I am watching Live TV over the 'air' no problem! d/l speeds excellent. Mp3 player is one of the best I have heard. Slider is slightly loose. no other issues. well impressed with this phone. WiFi and GPS yet to be tested!

I think the slider is an issue with all of ours. I dont think its a biggy.. until or when it falls off!!

Yep, same here, think the build quality of this phone is not great. I would say the N70 feel more alot more sturdy than my N95. I guess with cramming so much into it Nokia had to try and keep the costs down somehow!

khalz
03-04-2007, 09:31 AM
Yes I have noticed. Only very slight. I dont think it will cause a problem. But who knows? However, if something does occur with that, Nokia restrict liability with that sort of thing. Its 'Misuse of the handset'

Same here too. Annoying when using the menu keys in the vertical position. Also light seepage from the sides. A minor point but annoying as it might let dirt or condensation in. Wonder if it can be tightened.Who wants to take their new N95 to bits?

i'm using my shiny new n95 to post this comment on how pleased i am with it, no crashes yet, maps shut down once, the gps works great (even inside) camera is fantastic, tv out is cool, wifi works: it does disconnect after 2 mins but re connects when you click a link. The browser has been good as gold for me. Yet to comment on battery life, i'll find out today!
I have noticed the screen noise that's been mentioned here but it is difficult to hear; even in the quietest environments i have to press the middle of the screen to my ear to make out a very high pitched noise. Maybe i could use it to stop gangs of youths hanging around outside my local shop!
