Hello everyone,
I'm trying to see if anyone knows the answet to this question. I 'm planning to buy N95 as soon as it's released (hopefully ipelagos (http://www.ipelagos.com)wil have it) but I'm not sure if it wil include the maps for the GPS or if we'll have to buy the software separately. I'm located in Cyprus so I guess it makes it even harder for that to happen. Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi,
I think you can download the maps from http://www.smart2go.com/en/
I belive that this is for the uk, but global ones are / will be available.

I suppose it depends where you live and where you buy the phone from. If you buy a UK model, then you will obviously get the UK maps. However, you will be able to purchase more worldwide maps etc. You will also be able to buy a voice to direct you, like Tomtom etc have.

Good question. The GPS bullt in works via smart2go GPS software, but I dont see whats stopping you installing tomtom and using that. The only thing that im not sure about is the compatibility. Tomtom mobile at the moment needs an exteral GPS system to connect to.

I believe that all maps on smart to go are free, wherever you purchased the phone. It's the voice guidance and auto re-routing that it being charged for.

There's a list of available maps at the smart2go website or here http://www.nokia-n95.net/general/gps-satnav.html
As for TomTom - I'm not sure but the XDA Orbit has built in GPS and uses coPilot software. If coPilot has a symbian version then you should be able to use that?
To be honest - I cannot see why TomTom wouldn't work with the N95... and even if it doesn't work "out of the box" someone will make it work via a plug-in or small Symbian app.:D

I've installed smart2go on my N80 and I'm really unimpressed. It;'s slow, and compared to Tomtom, very difficult to use.

I tried smart2go and I am unimpressed too. Tomtom is a much better program and easier to use. It took me forever and a day to get smart2go to uninstall from my phone

I have tried smart2go and it is fine. I haven't tried paying for the guidance upgrade, but the FREE program is fantastic.
Yes, Tomtom is more powerful and easier to use (I use it on a Windows Mobile device). You can see the sense behind Nokia giving the basic application away for FREE - they need a hook to beat the incumbents like TT.
Did I mention that smart2go is FREE?
You can get maps of USA, Australia, parts of Africa, Far East, etc.
Even if you could buy these for Tomtom, they would cost hundreds.
For the occasional visit to the US it is loads better than nothing. And FREE.

Anyone know how the downloading of maps will work? I read in the manual that you can download using your router via wireless.
The N95 downloads maps, as needed, so if I turn it on while I am in Barcelona, say for example, it will download the map for Barcelona. Obviously this would cost a fortune, with roaming data charges, so what I want to know is can I download the maps for Barcelona, via my wireless router?
I am guessing you can browse the maps for any part of the world and it will download them at this point? Can't find the answer anywhere for this!

You can download via your wireless router. Or even to your PC and transfer them over.

So I can download a map of anywhere in the world, right from my home and then require no downloading when I go on holiday etc?
I wonder how many Countries I'd get on a 2gb card?

The voice guidance is free, i keep using it on the simulation on my N80 and haven't encounted any charges

You mean the simulation where you don't actually go anywhere. That is possibly free, to show you what it would be like if you paid.

I think it will since N95 is the one that will compete with iPhone, and the latter have google map as a built-in.

Would be nice if smart2go was compatible with Mac's :(
Does anyone know, how large the maps are, memory wise?
I would like to download UK, USA and Spain. Would that all fit on a 2gb card?

Full UK, US and Spanish maps would weigh in at 2180 megs, so no, not quite =(

You can pick and chose regions / states of all three countries though, so if there's areas you know you definitely won't go to then you can leave those out and easily get it below 2gb.
