Virgin Mobile has blamed a poor fourth quarter 2006 for customer additions on its new anti-box-breaking focus and an increase in price competition from rivals with 'very aggressive campaigns'.
MD Alan Gow admitted the fourth quarter of 2006 was 'not a very exciting quarter for us' after Virgin signed up just 11,100 net additions. 'The connection number is grossly inferior to many others,' he said. However, he claimed Virgin was 'being choosy' in focusing on revenue and margin growth 'as priorities'.
Virgin is 'not on a mission to drive connection numbers so we are not expecting a massive jump,' said Gow. But he questioned rivals' claims of high new final quarter customers. 'There is no way that between us there are 1.5 million new customers in the quarter.'
