I use a 3G data card which should activate through the Vodafone Mobile Connect Software on a 250mb per month limit. The software provides a meter that illustrates usage, allowing the user to see how much of the monthly allowance has been used.

Last year Windows XP started to override the Connect Software and connect automatically. I called the help desk and was advised to upgrade to the latest version which would resolve the issue. I downloaded V1.00.0015, and indeed it resolved the issue of connecting automatically. Unfortunately it came with its own built in problem - the meter showed that I had downloaded 4.02gb! I spent a substantial amount of time on the phone at Vodafone's extortionate rates, only to be told it was a known error and to ignore it.

I did as I was told, and today have received my latest bill, which is double the amount I expected.

I've now spent over 2 hours trying to resolve this issue (I have been told that I have no grounds for complaint!!!!) and was advised to download version 7.2.

I spent some time searching for the download page, only to find that it did not provide the latest version. Back on the phone; explain yet again to someone who has no knowledge of the data card and software. This time they did offer to call me back in 5 minutes, but 30 minutes later, I'm still waiting.

I believe the onus is on Vodafone to provide a means to monitor usage, and by deploying software that is known to contain errors, this condition has not been met. The customer service for data customers seems to be non existent, and I fear my only option is to take my business elsewhere, perhaps then I might be able to enter into a constructive dialogue with Vodafone.

Hi,

The usage graph will only show the data sent and received in a given period rather than a reflection of the total data that is shown on the final bill. The best way to explain this is, if the PC is switched off mid session than all record data on the dashboard will be lost from that session, giving an untrue reading. Other factors that prevent the dashboard graph from being an official indicator would be if the dashboard has been reinstalled at any point, this will lose any of the old data. Network optimisation in some Vodafone networks will also reduce the size of the file being sent (this can relate to images, large text files etc) while many applications such as Outlook, anti virus software, Windows Automatic updates etc. will constantly be sending and receiving data, sometimes automatically in the background.

A way of monitoring official usage as per the invoice would be to sign up for Vodafone's online billing, and then log in to check unbilled calls and usage charges when required (you can always sign up at www.vodafone.co.uk, selecting 'My Vodafone') It's worth pointing out that unbilled calls will be 72 hours behind on the network so there will be a couple of days delay
