Hi,

I have been using my v3 to connect to the internet on my laptop with web & walk pro at 115 Kbps. I have just tried connecting with my old Nokia 7600(3G) and it works at 460 Kbps.

The T mobile street check shows I have no 3G signal so how come the connection is so much faster ?
Is the coverage map up to date ?

I am deciding which new phone to get, I will get a 3G one but is it worth getting the samsung z560 with HSPDA?

Thanks

thats probably the speed your laptop is connecting to your mobile (which is all your operating system will know). I wouldnt mind betting your real speed will be somewhat less as 3G (without HSDPA) is up to 384k and 2G id be surprised if you get more than 60k. I would do a speed check like the one at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html to see what you are really getting.

are you getting a 3g symbol showing on the nokia???

the street check sometimes is not entirely accurate,

post me your postcode and i will check if you have 3g coverage

going by what you have said i would think you are getting somesort of 3g coverage there.

Yeh the streetcheck is a bit out of date. For me it says i only have 2G coverage but i get 4 bars of HSDPA with my datacard. BTW dont go for the Samsung as it isnt very good at picking up and holding signal. The HTC TyTN/ MDA Vario II would be a better option but there should be more choice later on in the year.

I tried the Samsung but also found it hopeless at holding on to a 3G signal. Shame as it was a nice handset. Of all the handsets I have tried I found the N73 the best for holding on to a signal.

Thanks for the help
I think 3G-Londoner is right about the connection speed shown, you can actually change this in the modem settings.
The speedtest shows it is just a 2G connection so I will have to make do with this or move to 3 which does have 3G coverage here.
I dont really want to change because the web & walk is good value.

Yes ... my actual, rather than stated, connection speed with my MDA working as a wireless modem for my laptop is bollocking slow. It seems just as slow when used in Web&Walk mode.

I do have a "G" symbol, that's when I can even connect at all (right now, I can't even connect for Web&Walk!!!). So I presume that means I am using 3G .... is that "G" symbol the only way to check?

Is there any way on the phone to check the actual connection speed?

When connected to laptop .. the connection speed the laptop reckons it's getting is something like 230 kbps (IIRC). Is this a 3G speed?? GPRS speed?? Some other protocol speed??

Any ideas on how I can improve connection speed? My laptop is USB-2 compatible, so I doubt it's a phone->laptop speed limitation issue.

Many thanks,
Richard

I thnk you will find that the G stands for GPRS and not 3G. When I am 3G coverage with my Vario 2 I get a 3 and when it drops back yo GPRS I get a G.
