Hi,
I have just brouht a Vario 11. Hope someone can help. The T-Mobile websie says that the Vario 11 can connect using HSDPA for speeds up to 1.8 meg. Having looked thiugh the manual I cannot find any mention of HSDPA. Does the Vario support it, if it does how can you tell when you are connected using it ? Thanks for any advice.

to answer your question

yes the vario 2 does support HSDPA(high speed data packet access) otherwise known as 3.5G

it will just show as the 3g icon on the phone and as long as your account is provisioned for HSDPA you will be getting it

if your on a web n walk package your account will be provisioned for HSDPA automatically and you will be getting it as long as you are in a 3G coverage area.

HSDPA is primarily an add on to 3G on the network m8.

Thanks for that. Can anyone tell me one more thing. At the moment there is only 1 T-Mobile 3G cell in my town, I am right on the edge of the coverage and during the day I get 1-2 signal bars but during the evening and around 8.00 in the morning I lose 3G coverage. I am very close to a 2G cell site and it picks up fine. Why do I lose coverage at certain times every day ?

hi,

you will be losing your 3g signal at certain times simply because there will be other users 'nearer' the cell itself logging onto 3g, there will be fierce competition on that cell and they will have priority.

you will get kicked back onto 2.5G(GPRS) like you say because you are further away from the cell than other users.

its kinda hard to explain lolol

Yes Basically the more people using that cell, the weaker the signal will get generally. It can vary quite alot depending on times of the day and when people use it more.

Generally, it will tell you if you are in an HSDPA area with a small H instead of 3G. HSDPA signal, although runs off the conventional 3G cells, is actually a separate signal, so it could well mean your not in a 3G area. Its generally available in large city centres, however, its expanding all the time.

Hi, sorry for hijacking, but what do you think of the vario 11. I'm thinking about it and would appreciate hearing how you feel about the weight, usability etc. I already use a pocket pc so I'm familiar with that. It's the integration/bulk/weight which interests me.
Thanks in advance.

You don't get an H displayed on T-Mobile with the Vario II - just the 3G symbol.

Ricvic - have a look at the Hermes subforum on www.modaco.com - personally I'm very happy with mine.

Had no problems with mine. When its had a 3G signal download have been very fast. Its not the smallest phone in the world, but it is very compact. Its about 3-4 mil shorter than my P990I and about 2 mil wider. One thing is that its a lot more reliable. Using my P990I on some web pages jush crashes it. No such problems with the Vario and if you have the coverage you get HSDPA.

quick example, work in east london on shifts

days real slow conection, but at 2am in the morning its proper quick, due to the lucky ones, ( most ) who are tucked up in bed, not using the networks bandwidth
