View Full Version : N95 on Orange

I thought that I would champion the requests from other forum members to have a thread dedicated to the N95 on Orange. It seems that this 'tradition' began with the N80 and was very 'popular' for some considerable time. LOL
Any news on an exact release date bjh?!
Marwood. :)
Spoke to Jo at Orange CS this morning. She checked the system and it showed no release date. Not even listed for review at the moment. She commented that the N serries had had alot of problems (really!!) and that perhaps Orange would let it go generic and then keep an eye on the phone before branding. I went through the motions of telling her to check out my experiences with the N80 but I pointed out that my present one was fine. She put this down to the fact that I have my packet data switched to 'when needed'. Suggesting that this had a big impact on performance. She is still using a 6680, believing that the N serries is a great idea but flawed. I sugested this was down to RAM. Wonder what the actual RAM of an N95 will be? will it be enough to support the phone properly or will the N95 be another example of 'Nokia work in progress'.

Yes, most of it is RAM problems. If Nokia spent that bit extra on putting a bit more in, they would sell many more, as the main complaint that puts people off them, is that they are just a bit too slow, and crash a lot!
As for Orange, do you mean they won't release it until they see how it performs on other networks etc? Or that they will release it themselves unbranded. I personally hope for the latter. I like the little Orange logo on the phone, but everything else they do to it is a waste of time and money.
When do you think it is suitable to start bugging Orange CS everyday?! ;)
(oh, and Marwood, did you really phone Orange just to ask about the N95?!

Yes ram has become a problem with Nokia phones of late. Infact RAM management on v2 firmware, as on the E61 and E70 is better. All S60 3rd Edition devices should really come with at least another 32MB of RAM.
It would only cost Nokia a bit more to manufacture and would have saved them a HUGE amount of R&D in terms of trying to work round the RAM paucity in software.
I am not certain how much base RAM the N93 has but free RAM has been a problem.
Having said that apparently the CPU speed is higher in the n95 than the N93 so it may well have more RAM.

Well, yes I did ring Orange CS about the N95. I'm sure they were expecting me to bother them about it at some point! LOL.
I'm not clear exactly what Jo meant about generic N95's but I suspect she means that Orange will wait to see how the phone performs on it's release through Nokia retailers first. The upshot of this could be that where the N80 was released relatively promply by the network there could well be even longer delays before it could be released. CS will no doubt use this as their well worn rhetorical excuse in the months ahead. Indeed, Jo's comment could well be doing the ground work for this type of gibberish. Remember It we knew about the release of the N80 before CS did and it was a week or so after that when the Birkenhead shop became aware that it had gone on sale. A visit to the Birkenhead shop yesterday suggested the N80 has run out of steam......it wasn't on display anymore. Sadly, I did not have the time or the inclination to ask the staff.
Again, from Orange's perspective they will be looking at the demand for the N95. Will it be able to generate enough new buisiness for them to take it up warts and all, like the N80, or will it just cause more problems and disatisfaction, leading to a loss of business if they just run with it??
Perhaps we should all start hounding CS, requesting a release date......that would signify at least some customer interest.
Orange will blame Nokia, Nokia will blame the network....whilst secretly knowing their programmers have had to cut the odd corner to satisfy the sales and marketing team's deadlines for release. More RAM vicar?
We have all been here before........just a little bit of history repeating.

Just to go slightly off topic, o2 is showing the N95 as coming soon in March...So that will be July then...

Don't worry, this topic is likely to go off-topic several times before the N95 is released... ;)
Anyway, its good to see that (hopefully) at least one network will be getting it so either Orange will have to follow suit, or we can all move to O2!

It is supposed to be released Q1 2007 but I read somewhere (cant remember where), but it was a reliable source that it had been pushed back to Q2. I was stupid with my N80 in taking up an 18 month contract. Been on my account today as I'm only just over half way through my contract to see how much an upgrade would cost me. I was surprised it was only £100. I had expected it to be loads more, but then I do use my phone a lot and am always going over and I am on Panther !!!!!.
My N80 died and couldn't get it replaced by Orange as they no longer stock it and was not happy to have a refurb so got another Nokia, not 3g unfortunately. They had nothing I wanted.

Marwood, generic means it will be as nokia made it with their firmware on it and will not have orange firmware/branding on it. It could also mean it is not sim locked. My Mum had one of the 1st 6280's which had no branding on it and was not sim locked, later ones were orange branded and locked to orange

hi, i will be surprised if orange miss out on the n95, i'm sure they will brand it with their own rubbish firmware which may or may not foul it up. judging on how orange have ditched other n series, it may never make it to the orange range.

Memories...
This thread appears to be going the way of the N80 on Orange thread did before release with much speculation, debate and prayer that the N80 wouldn't have a home screen. Thankfully it didn't!
Again, we can hope that Orange will release generic, or at least very little branding on the N95. If they even release it at all that is...
*bjh gets on his knees and starts praying to the phone gods.*
P.S. I am glad I only had 12 month contract... I can upgrade early anytime from Feburary onwards, so its just a case of waiting for the N95!
By the way my upgrade fees currently are £150. I spend on average £40 per month. But only £25 of that is actuall minimum tariff.

It would be interesting to find out if all these problems on the Nokia phones are caused by networks adding their own software.
Does anyone think it would be possible to do a poll and ask people using handsets bought sim free & therefore without say Orange's extra little bits on?
bjh_101
16-01-2007, 06:57 PM
Well some people can compare phones before and after flashing with generic firmware.
I can deffinately say that the generic firmware is much much better than the Orange one. However, this is not strictly a fair comparisan because the Orange firmware was v3, and the generic is the new v4, where Nokia made improvements to the memory management.
Additionally, the only extra bits Orange put on the N80 was the photography application which could be disabled. Considering it was Orange, the N80 had suprisingly little branding.

Hello All,
I was one of the many waiting on the n80 last time and get very good deals from oranage along with the hand sets when they are released.
Just spoke to upgrades and they havent got a date on the n95 at all as they are having problems with the n series phones (we all know its because they rape all their memory hungry softwar on them)
He said end of the month there should be some more news of whats in review, as at the moment it looks like just PAYG phones.
I might move away from smart phones, the n76 looks nice and not over crowded with features?

Also, anyone know the price of sim free...heard speculation of £375.

And might have to be done...
Just phoned Orange upgrades:
Me: "Do you have any information on if you will be getting the Nokia N95?"
CSR: "We will not being doing anymore N-Series phones"
Me: "What - never again?"
CSR: "No"
Me: "Why?"
CSR: "There are too many problems with them, so we won't invest any more money into them"
Me: "What happens if they make a really good one, and you miss out"
CSR: "That won't happen."
lol. I personally don't believe it is as simple as that. But looks like Orange might be loosing a few customers over the N95 unless they get it.

Lol yes. I really don't want to risk another network. Orange still have yet to wrong me (and my contract happens to be a pretty good deal.)
I phone Orange direct sales who said they wouldn't be getting it, and then phoned Orange retentions who said it wasn't on the system, but that changes weekly.
It really doesn't look hopeful though as it looks like a March release for everyone else. I really am tempted to get it Sim free after selling an upgrade.
(I did also consider not getting it, and waiting for Orange or the iPhone - but i've read a few more previews, seen some demo pics and videos, and this phone is amazing. i must have it.)

I don't want the crappy firmware - but I'm basing my experiences on the N80. Orange didn't really do much to it to hurt it (apart from the photography app.)
I will of course flash with generic firmware if and when I get the opportunity.

No more N series phones on orange! thats what they have just told me, plus the nokia site has no more phones coming out that look good!
The orange guy also said that sony music phones are the best they have and have the best software, so people like me who dont want an ipod on there phone are at a dead end!
They also said the SPV's are the next best, looks like we are stuck with the n80

I was just told that they are unlikely to get it. But I will persist until the end! haha.
OMGOMGOMG - I just called Orange direct sales 08000792000 who said and I quote "It's penciled for the 26th of March, but the Nseries is a bit unpredictable so could change either way"
I nearly fainted at this and asked him where that information was coming from because of the talk that Orange weren't getting it. He said it came from his handset information.
We obviously need to get this confirmed. lol. I might phone back now... lol.
edit: ok that time he said no information at all about it and to keep checking the internet. but he didn't spend any time looking, whereas the first chap took a while to look for it.

I know. It is very positive information. Surely it wouldn't be put in the magazine unless they were getting it. (just like saying, look at this amazing phone, now go and join O2 for it)
It sounds like they will be getting generic versions in order to keep up with the initial demand. Probably around April - May. (Btw this last sentance was complete speculation!)
I heard today that the N95 will be out on orange on the 3rd April. Only the main big shops will stock it at first as orange is only going to get 500 N95 on their first shipment... i guess the best way is to preorder your N95 :)

I popped into my local orange shop yesterday to check up on this phone, and knowing that it was in their catalogue had a quick glance at it, before asking one of their employees if they had any dates yet, he seemed unsure, but his boss over heard what was said and proceeded to tell me that although it was in the catalogue she had just heard that day that orange would not be selling it despite it being in the catalogue due to nokia refusing to let orange upload their music player onto the N95. She said that it was unlikely that either side would back down and until one of them did it won't be available on orange - it all seems rather petty tbh. Looks like I'll be changing to O2 then...

I've been using it to research my current N80 and all the other N series phones i've used. I, to am on Orange, and a bit upset about what dannyhunter was told today. I had a phonecall from Orange today, asking why i hadn't upgraded yet!, well i upgrade usually every 6-9 months
Anyway, whilst searching the net tonight i came accross http://www.phoneboxdirect.com/ohandsetdetail.asp?PHONEFINDER=true&handset=Nokia%20N95 , who are taking details for a contract N95 on orange! , what do they know that you lot don't.

Just a suggestion for you guys who want the N95 on Orange (if they don't release it on Orange)... Why not get the best upgrade you can (currently) and then sell it on eBay? Use the cash towards a SIM free 95 and put your SIM in it????
I can't believe that after all the interest in the N95, Orange would refuse to stock it - that is commercial stupidity, surely keeping paying contract customers is better than getting a few £'s in downloads:confused:

The most expensive 'free' upgrade at the mo is the SE W880i , which is on e-bay for £250-£270 at the mo. Still would need to put a few pennies together to buy it sim free.

As you are aware, I have been an Orange customer now for <x> years, and I always like to keep up to date with new technology, hence the reason my next upgrade will be the Nokia N95.
However, since no-one is able to give me confirmation of when this phone will be available on the Orange network, I may have to venture to one of the 'other' networks who are promising this phone at the start of April.
I may be convinced to remain with Orange, if you can confirm this phone will definitely become available, and within a reasonable time scale.
I look forward to your reply.

I was preparing to upgrade to the N75 and quite happy to do so (not knowing about the N95). But the assistant in the Orange Shop (who's a great person) actually told me not to. She said that the N95 was expected - though she couldn't absolutely guarantee that Orange were going to carry it. She said that the store wouldn't get certain confirmation until a couple of days before, hopefull in a week or two. And that she'd ring me in the next fortnight if there's any news - or I could have the N75 if they don't take it. I might wait and have the N95 with another carrier in a few months.

According to Phonebox direct, Orange will be carrying it. Orange's own website is still mute. But other people are a bit more on the ball.

I call spam above, the link even has a referer in it. The web site looks pretty dubious as well and poorly presented.
I'll be sending an email as well, but I really think decisions will be made from the top down rather by the bottom up, even with a mass of emails. It's sad if what the store manager said that what will prevent Orange getting the N95 is due to Nokia not allowing their music player to be installed. I wish networks would stop putting unecessary superfluous software crap on phones, perhaps they will then realise people will have less software issues with their phone.
Although saying this I've being an Orange customer since 2000 but think I'm going to switch over to T-Mob with the Web n' Walk plan which without getting would make the N95 would be pointless/very expensive for me.
I've been told by CS that it will be 'definitely available by the end of the year', they clearly have no idea whats going on and perhaps nobody that customers can speak to will have until around April.

I just found this thread because I too am looking for the N95 without leaving Orange.
I live in Newcastle and have a fair few friends who work in Orange S&S, I asked the most senior and clued up of them about upgrading to the N95. Yes it'll be possible, time-wise, it'll be in a month or so.

Hi, m8 & welcome.
I hope your friend is right, as there is quite a lot of us that are loyal Orange customers, and don't want to have to leave, unless were forced to.

Its nice to see other networks getting this phone. Collectivley it should help to bring the price down after the first month or so.

E-mail has just been sent.
I am still quietly confident.
I remember getting the 7610. No one knew about it, then suddenly Orange got it first. Then the N80 and homescreen etc. Orange released it first with barely any branding. So i think Orange will suprise us shortly... they seem to have a habit of keeping us guessing though. lol

The N95 is in the Orange UK March catalogue from the Orange shop.
Ity's also listed in the Carphone Warehouse March catalogue as being available on Orange soon.
Fingers crossed,... I was after the N93,... but then the N95 came out!!!

Dont know if its worth mentioning but the nokia shop in southampton has a dummy display model of the N95 available and lists the phone in its catalogue and on display as available on T-Mobile and Vodafone (Although vodafone is something ridiculous like £75 a month) But theres currently no price listing for orange, three or o2, it just says N/A. I couldnt find any details on the actual release date of the model or anything and i didnt really have time to ask the staff, might go back tomorrow and check.

I'm on a Premier £55 tarrif with Orange currently. I've got two other phones on Orange contracts all under the family plan.
I'm hoping that i get it for free as the monthly bill for three phones is close on £180.
If it comes out in the end.......!

Orange are always last to get new phones because they like to cram them with silly firmware.
T-mobile, Voda are both definites and Three also has suprised on many occasions by bringing new handsets out like this out of the blue.
But as for Orange customers, request a PAC code or look forward to your next upgrade option: a top of the range Moto V3 RZR on the brand new Hippo tarrif!! (Sarcasm intended for anyone who is waiting the correct me lol)
The futures bright.... but instead choose Orange ;)
Sorry cant you tell im a Orange hater (see my other posts to find out why!)
