Hi guys,

I used to have an A1000 and wireless web on my account, which I used with my mac laptop to access the internet.

I today received my N73.

So all I did was duplicate the settings I used for the A1000 in my network preferences and swapped the blutooth modem selection from motorola to the nokia that I downloaded from the same site I got the motorola one from.

The Nokia will not connect up.

Any suggestions?

TIA

For a day I had this working, and now (without having changed any settings) it just doesn't any more. I don't know what's caused it -- it looks like the n73 simply isn't responding to the first line in the modem script any more ("AT\13"). Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I got this working again. (I'm posting from my laptop using my N73 connection now.) Try this.

1. If you haven't already, download and install Ross Barkman's Nokia 3G modem scripts from here (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/).

2. If you've already paired your phone and your Mac, go into System Prefs > Bluetooth, select your phone, and choose "Edit Serial Ports", then delete any entries in the list relating to dial-up networking. Then click on "Configure ..." and go to step 4.

3. if you haven't already paired your phone and your Mac, do so.

4. You'll be asked to select the services you want to use with your mobile. Select "Access the internet" and under that "Use a direct, higher speed connection" and click "Continue".

5. Enter the appropriate network settings, which you can find here (http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html). For 3 UK, leave Username and Password blank and enter "three.co.uk" in "GRPS CID String".

6. Select the modem script. "Nokia 3G CID1" is probably right (works for 3 UK); if things don't work try again with CID2.

7. That should be it. The connection won't authenticate if you have an open 3G connection on the phone, so make sure there aren't any before you try to connect from your Mac.

Kikujiro I am indebted to you !

Thankyou SO much! It was so easy to set-up with those modem scripts!

I've got 512 mb free on my 3 phone a month and was dismayed to find out you have to pay for an extra add on to access 'the wireless web'. What bullbit! The e-mail service on the n73 is a bit rubbish (I'm coming from a p910i) incidentally!

Also I regularly take 2 hour train journeys to visit my missus and have to spend £7.99 for 2hour internet on the train which is a rip off (hell I'm a student and want internet both ways!) when all I really want to do is work on my e-mails and occasionally use the web.

Now I can do normal things like e-mail and surf on those journeys + it will be nice being able to reply to a few e-mails on the way to work in the morning (I am a student but take an overground train to a job twice a week)

Plus! The internet connection to 3 is fast - faster than my supposed 2 mb connection at home! Thankyou so so so much! I bet you've helped a lot of other people giving a pain-free, step by step guide!

Nice one geeza!

Dave

P.S Does anyone know of any good OS X browsers that will load images but of lesser quality? ( I'm already thinking with this connection in mind )

Ok. I've successfully used my n73 as a 'modem' for fast internet on my laptop but one thing...

I noted down my free mobile data - (I have 512 mb a month) before browsing for about 5 minutes, streaming audio and video and after I disconnected and then looked under 'My Usage' in 'My 3' - it hasn't changed. It was 524279 kb when I started then when I looked again it was the same. I even switched the phone on and off. And yes - I did turn off my airport - does anyone know why this is?

Am I going into an illegal access point? or maybe the data usage just doesn't show up? Help would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to be hit with massive charges at the end of the month, just want to stick to the 512 limit!

Thanks David

David --

I don't think so.* We're on exactly the same setup (N73, OSX, 3, 512Mb), and I was wondering the same thing at first, but as far as I can see the My Usage thing only updates occasionally. You'll probably find it goes down after a day or so.

My first bill shows 300Mb of data usage. Nearly all of that was with my laptop, and it all comes up as included in the 512 bundle (unlike the outrageous cost of a couple of 0870 calls to Apple technical support ... next time I'm using the trick of phoning the Regent St store and connecting from there)

So I hope you're okay.

By the way -- I've found that sometimes the OSX/phone connection just stops working. If you keep getting modem failures, connect with the Internet Connect app and open the Connection Log. If you see something like this:

Wed Nov 1 08:40:11 2006 : CCLWrite : AT\13
Wed Nov 1 08:40:16 2006 : CCLWrite : AT\13
Wed Nov 1 08:40:19 2006 : CCLWrite : AT\13
Wed Nov 1 08:40:22 2006 : Connect script failed

then the only fix I've found is to recreate the connection:

1. Delete the old one. Go to Bluetooth in Sys Prefs, select your phone, click "Edit Serial Ports ...", select the one item in the list and delete it with the little minus button, click Apply.

2. Still in Sys Prefs, still with your phone selected, click on "Configure ...". Deselect iSync setup (you don't need to redo that one) and click on "Continue". It should keep the account details so all you then need to do is choose OK. Connecting should now work.

Glad it's working for you.

* If I'm wrong about the bills I'm really sorry, and we're both ****ed :)

Meanwhile, can anyone explain why my spend since my last bill (which was about 3 days ago) is currently showing as -£29? (Yes, that's a minus sign.)
