Hi all...
I'm new to the forum and also new to 3G!
I've recently purchased a Nokia N73 and on the whole very happy with it.
However, I've discovered an intermittent issue and was wondering if anyone else had experienced it...
Basically, when receiving a call, the phone freezes and turns itself off!! I haven't been able to figure out what causes it (due to it being intermittent), but I've a sneaky suspicion that it has something to do with 3-d ringtones...
Anyone?

hi, i havent come across this problem myself, but if you think it may be the 3d ringtones why not turn the 3d ringtone bit off and use normal tones and see if it makes any difference when recieving a call

Thanks chrisscott,
I've obviously tried this, that why I think it's due to the 3-d ringtones. The problem only occurs when 3-d ringtones are on... but doesn't always happen. It's not an essential feature to me, so was just wondering if anyone else had encountered it....

I think i've finally isolated the problem... I had inadvertently switched on "say callers name".
When this is combined with 3-d ringtones, the phone crashes just as it's about to say the callers name. If you answer before or the caller in unknown / withheld then it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

Mines also switched itself off during a call, I also had the 3D tones/say callers name on. I will give that a go :)
I had both 3D and say callers switched off on my phone and the yesterday the phone rebooted while I was on a call (6 mins call) and cut the call. I had longer calls than that so it is not the call duration. In the log it showed that the call duration was zero so I don't know what happened.
In another forum someone suggested to reduce the log to hold 24 hours rather than 30 days, so I have switched to 10 days.

I've encountered the issue where a call is dropped and the phone crashes mid-call but I think that this is unrelated to the say callers name and 3-d ringtones. I found that this combination crashed the phone only when it was actually ringing...
However, let me know if turning the features off does fix the phone crashing mid call problem because its a real pain in the arse when it happens.

I have problems with the N73 as well.
Common Symptoms:
1. During conversations : Phone freezes, Screen Phases out, Restarts
2. Phone Ringing : same as above
3. While messaging/texting : same as above
4. While using the phone features for long periods: same as above
5. Receiving text messages : same as above
6. While plugged into the charger : same as above
This happens 2x/4x a day. Multimedia features are ok - camera, video, vga video, 3D sounds, speakers, music player, realplayer, internet, games, FM radio, Flash lite, PDF
Viewer, etc.
Connections are ok as well : Infra Red, Bluetooth, USB Cable, Mini SD (1 gig 150x Ridata), PC Suite, Mass Storage.
Symptoms only appear during communications.
My diagnosis:
It appears to be the 3G SIM which is screwing up the phone system. I've tried switching off 3D ringing tones, switch back to GSM, and switched off the caller name, removed the battery, and reformatted and reflashed it at Nokia Care. Doesn't work at all. The culprit is the 3G SIM which the phone hates. And Nokia Care didn’t even noticed it.
So, I removed the 3G SIM and replaced with an ordinary GSM SIM. Voila, symptoms gone. Only thing is, when I tested it for text messaging which I deliberately made it to 9 pages long, the symptoms went back. So, now I have to type short messages to less than 5 pages, to be sure. But, I don't think this is the cause though, as I speed typed to almost 10 pages without any symptoms at all. I suspect spending long periods of time using the keypad will cause the phone to restart. So, I predict that if someone uses the keypad to more than 3-5minutes, it restarts.
I returned the phone and have it exchanged with a humble 6101. As long as I can call and text, fine with me.
My verdict: Don't buy this phone if you are planning for 3G experience. Don't buy this phone if the unpredictable freezing and restarting annoys you. It annoyed me. Care for a ride?
Torment duration : 18 days 7hours 14minutes and 33 seconds.

I think your phone must have been faulty. My N73 has never re-booted during a calls or at any other time. The only time it has re-booted is when I tested it with the 3D ring-tones and the "say the callers name" set to on. Even then it re-booted as soon as it said the callers name. I have used it extensively on 3G for accessing emails, browsing the web, texting and making calls. It is on O2, which has no branded firmware other than a screen saver. Yes the phone has a few glitches, but having owned well over 20 phones of all brands over the years. I have not had a phone that is 100% bug free.

^Mine only works on a non 3G based SIM.
Anyway, there's a new firmware for the N73, but I returned my unit already. I'm eyeing on the N95 next year, which has wifi. But I learned my lesson already, once the N95 is released, I'll wait for 3 more months, just in case there'll be bugs.

Kindly comment if there's any improvement at all.

Hi all,
I had this problem after about 4 weeks of having the phone. Eventually took it to a nokia service centre in the city. Only they didn;t upgrade the software to the new one but to the one it has - jan 2007. Apparent;y the other one isn't out in the shop yet (yeah whatever).
Anyway. Phone sometimes swtiches itself off when I answer it or mid way through the call.
It's intermittent at the moment but it's annoying. It seems to be when i have photos on it - when i didn't have photos, i didn;t seem to get this problem.
Anyway to cut a long story short. It shouldn't happen in the first place. If you buy a car and you get problems you take it back and get it rectified. Same here. If nokia can't make phone that work 100% then in my opinion they can;t be arsed. This phone has been out for a long time now (in phone terms), but they still can';t get it right. I've had samsungs and Sonys in the past and always found them 100% reliable. I don't give two hoots that this is a 3g phone and smartphone with simbian software etc. So what? It should still work. In the same sense if I bought an ipod i expect it to work and perfrom as it says on the tin. This doesn't. Nokia need to get back to the basics. Wholly disappointed as I really wanted to return to nokia phones. FYI - i've still got the nokia 6200 and it runs fine for being at least 4 yrs old. No problems with battery life, phone crashing or whatever - oh and that phone is about twice as thin as this one.
