As of now I dont think Nokia offer this direct from their website but im sure that situation will change in the near future given that the service is available for the n91.
For now though you would have to take the phone to a service point.

Active Idle:
Updated active idle plug-in (H3G)
Does this mean that the annoying scrolling bar can now be turned off? Sounds like an update to active standby..so i'm hopeful :)
Anyone tried this update on a 3 phone yet? or know if this is only a generic nokia firmware update or if it applies to 3-branded phones also??

I have had this fone on 3 for a while and on the whole its very good. Bluetooth is buggy, sometimes the phone switches off without reason, gallery has its moments.. and no update available via the Nokia updater service.. but I live in eternal hope.

Latest version is 3.0638.0.0.1 (or it was last week!)
To enable Nokia Software Updater to put this on your phone you need to change your product code to a generic one, then it will do it. (I did it on mine a few weeks ago).
Only problem is I can't remember the name of the freeware I used to do it. I think it was NSS. Search i-phone forum for more info.
The main difference I noticed is the bluetooth actually works; I use TomTom6 and it always used to drop the connection. I've had it running for over an hour and it was fine.

Has anyone successfully updated their Firmware on a Three-branded N73 via

If so, has it caused any problems?

Is that because it removes the application or because of the connection settings (do I need to back up all the applications I've got saved on the phone memory, like Opera, HandyZip, etc.?)

A few questions....
1. If i update the software by changing the product code to allow my 3 branded N73 to take the latest version, can I then go back when 2 catch up.
2. Can Nokia Service Centres tell the code as been changed...?
3. If i change the code back to the "3" code, then go to nokias website to update will it "downgrade" my firmware.

Hi,
I have been complaining to 3UK about the problems (bluetooth, memory cards etc) for months too. I have posted correspondence on this site and the Nokia discussions site.
Who did you speak to at 3UK to get the phone unlocked for free? I have been sending and receiving emails to people at the 3UK Executive Office and they have not got back to me with a release date. Last I heard was it was going to be released on the 22nd Dec 06 and this was postponed for a release date of early 2007 but no more info from them.
I really want to be able to use Navicore on my N73.
Please tell me which dept at 3UK you spoke to. Either post here or send me a PM on the Nokia discussions board as my username is the same.
Many thanks.
I'll write a long-winded whinging email tonight. Getting fed up with the delay now.

Thanks for the info. Below is the latest reply I received from Nokia Executive Office on the 8th Jan 2007:
"Thank you for the safe return of the memory cards provided, and I am
disappointed that they did not resolve the matter you have highlighted.
I have still been in contact with our Technical team over this time,
and have reported back the results of your using these cards and to try and
gain further information that may assist.
With regards to the 2GB memory card, we have reviewed some Nokia
information on the internet, and have found that the 2GB memory card is
not recommended as compatible for this handset, as although the
information will be transmitted to the memory card and formatted there,
the reader capacity of the handset can not facilitate the full
information on the card due to its size. This has nothing to do with
the firmware on the handset. You have not advised previously of the
results of using the other memory card provided so cannot comment on
this.
With regards to the speed of the handset operation, we have had this
matter reported from several customer using the Nokia handset. On
review, we have found with these handsets that several applications can
be active at the one time. As a general handset user over some time,
one tends to use the red phone key to exit applications on the handset.
This exits the applications, but does not close it. Please can you
check by pressing and holding the menu key which will show what
applications are currently running. If several are open, please close
these by pressing the cancel button. In each reported incident
regarding the application speed, this has fully resolved the matter.
Irrespective of the software/firmware available on the website from
Nokia, the handset is sold as locked to the 3 network, and although
this may be an inconvenience in terms of what you have expected, the sale of
the handset is guaranteed only for the services provided by 3 directly,
and hence any other functions are actual accessories on the handset.
Therefore the handset is not as such "unfit" for purpose, because it
has been released from 3 to be fit for the purpose of 3 services, which it
is.
Understandably we do not allow for random software upgrades or changes
to firmware without prior testing and permission from 3, as this may
affect the services that we provide and the browsers that are installed
on each handset to facilitate our network services. As **** has
previously advised, we do not fully test and approve every software
version released if they do not benefit or effect 3 services.
I have today emailed our Technical team for an update as to the
firmware being tested at present, and will provide this as soon as possible.
The options previously made still remain and if you are unhappy with
the handset, purely as a gesture of goodwill, we have offered to cancel the
contract without penalty of the handset is returned safely to us.
Once again, thank you for your patience in this matter and I will be in
touch shortly with updates regarding the firmware."
I replied to the above email on 8th Jan 2007 with:
"I am glad to hear that the memory cards safely
arrived.
I have found the phone to be slow without having any
thing opened up on it. When pressing the key which
allows you to switch programs and shows what is open,
only the standby function is displayed but the phone
takes ages to access the applications menu, tools menu
etc.
The 128MB memory card formatted okay in the phone
although the phone was still rather slow at accessing
menus etc.
At the weekend I was playing the KO Boxing game which
I downloaded from Planet 3 games. This crashed and I
could not close it down as whenever I tried to click
the cancel (right soft key) nothing happened and
although the red key took me to the startup window,
the program was still loaded when viewing active
programs. Even trying to switch in the active window
did not resolve the closing of the game when it
switched to it. In the end I had to resort to turning
the phone off and on again. No error message was
displayed when the game froze.
Nokia have the 2GB miniSD card as a recommended
accessory for the N73 on their website under data,
memory cards:
http://www.nokia.co.uk/accessorieslink?s=N73
Clicking on the 'list compatible phones' link the N73
shows up as the 4th phone in the top row. If this
size of memory card was not suitable for the phone
then Nokia would not be offering it for sale as a N73
accessory. I have read that the later firmware has
fixed the memory card issues and I was even told by a
memory card shop to upgrade the firmware before
purchasing a card from them. Other of their customers
have had similar problems due to the firmware version.
The N73 phone was advertised by 3 as having Bluetooth
capabilities as it was listed as one of the functions
of the phone. Looking just now on the three website:
http://threestore.three.co.uk/phoneplan.aspx?offercode=&phoneDesc=Nokia_N73&phoneCode=NON733DSL&tariffid=0
The n73 is stated as ‘Bluetooth: Yes (stereo)’
3UK are therefore still advertising that the phone has
Bluetooth capability. Therefore the Bluetooth
function of the phone should work properly. Otherwise
I think that this is false advertising.
Part of choosing a mobile phone is down to is
capabilities. If 3 are only interested in the
services that they offer, perhaps they should only
sell there own make and model of phone? What is the
point of advertising different makes and models if the
consumer finds out that any problems with the phones
capabilities are not going to be fixed?
I do hope that the technical team at 3 see sense and
approve the Nokia update fix for the N73 which
resolves the Bluetooth, memory card, and other issues."
I have not received a reply from 3UK Executive Office from my above email. I am going to email them again now to chase them up. I find the matter appalling. 3UK replied with stupid comments: phone only suitable for 3 services and 2GB memory card not suitable when Nokia say a 2GB is compatible with the N73 and 3UK are advertising the fact that N73 has Bluetooth capabilities on their website!
What a complete joke the situation is. I have complained to Watchdog, OFCOM and Consumer Rights. I have been considering whether to contact The Press such as TV News and newspapers. It is true that firmware issues are not just due to Nokia but are a big problem with the manufacturers and Network Providers in the Mobile Phone Industry. The whole Industry needs a good shake up to sort out the issues.

All I want is to be able to use my N73 phone as it is supposed to be used i.e. stable Bluetooth, capable of using 2gb memory cards that meet the SD standard, a phone that is not slow in opening up menus such as taking 5 seconds to open up the Application menu....
Basically having a phone which features work as they should do and performs as you would expect from such a device.

Right I have just sent this to 3UK to chase them up:
Below is a copy of my previous message.
Has a date been decided as to the release of the new firmware update for the N73 phone?
I am extremely fed up now with the situation as your last email to me was on the 8th January 2007 and it is now the 20th January 2007. It does not take this long for programmers to test another company's firmware update.
If this matter does not get resolved quickly within the next week I am going to go to the UK Press with this matter. I have copies of all communications to pass to them.

Hi there, good morning.
I just bought 2 days ago a Nokia N73 on 3 network, and after reading all the info in this thread I'm a bit concerned...
My firmware is this:
V 2.0628.0.0.1
10-07-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (54.06)
I just wanted to know a couple of things, if it's possible to upgrade this phone via Nokia's web, as the phone is at the moment 3 network branded, or if this is only possible to do if the phone is unlocked.
Also, if I can do it now, what will be the difference? I've read about the problems people are having with the menu being slow to open apps, bluetooth not working properly, and 2gb memory cards, but mine doesnt give me those problems, except for the memory card, I dont have a 2gb one to test it, but my bluetooth works fine, and the menu goes alright, not slow at all... but just in case, I'd like to upgrade it since the actual firmware in it is from July last year, I suppose that the newest firmware should better than the one I have now...
To finish, I just wanted to say that I'm very happy with this phone, just got it for 2 days but I think is the best phone I've ever had, and I've had lots of them :D
Thanks for your info and help, appreciate it :)
It's a good phone, don't let this thread put you off. :) There are just some 'issues' we are still waiting to be addressed.
Basically, you have the same firmware as everyone else. This firmware is useless for bluetooth anything. You cannot update it via the website, software or a Nokia service centre as 3 have not yet released an upgrade (primarily what this thread is barking about).
Stick with us, write to 3, bitch like hell, maybe we'll get somewhere one day.

Latest email from 3UK Executive Office:
Thank you for your recent emails to Mr **** and also to myself. The Executive Office responds to all communication directed to Mr Fuller and I will therefore confirm the response I have received from our Technical Specialists today regarding your Nokia N73 firmware concerns.
Although a firmware update has now been released for the Nokia N73 to rectify the Bluetooth issue that you have been experiencing, we have taken the decision not to make this update available on our network. This is because the update is known to cause a number of other potential issues with the handset, and taking this into account, we do not believe that it is beneficial to our customers. We have instead liaised with Nokia to establish when a further firmware update will become available which resolves all of these issues and ensures that the handset's overall performance is robust. We have been advised of an approximate timeframe of the end of May 2007.
I understand that this is not the answer that you are hoping for, however, please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and has been made with our customer's best interests in mind.
I'd be interested to know what "other issues" they have in mind. Everyone seems quite happy with the new firmware where they've got it....

I've just sent the following to 3UK Exec. Office:
"Thank you for the information.
I have the following points to make regarding your
response:
1) Someone on the All About Symbian forum
(http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56065)
in a post dated 19/01/2007 said that they sent their
N73 phone to 3UK due to firmware issues and it was
returned with:
V 3.0638.0.0.1
30-10-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (54.01)
This is an upgraded firmware.
2) Someone in the 3G forum stated that they sent their
3UK N73 to Nokia and Nokia said that 3UK needed to
unlock the phone which the customer got 3UK to do for
free and Nokia have now totally re-written the
bluetooth code and upgraded the firmware on his phone.
3) If the above 2 customers have received upgraded
firmware from Nokia and directly from 3UK then I
should therfore be able to have my N73 firmware
upgraded.
4) Other users (generic and other Network Providers
customers) with V3.... firmware are rather happy with
the upgraded firmware as they are able to use
Bluetooth devices properly and do not have issues with
2GB memory cards.
5) What compensation are 3UK and Nokia offering N73
users as it is clear that the performance of the N73
is not currently robust? It is clear that the N73 was
released with inadequate firmware as bluetooth
connections do not remain stable and connected.
Compensation is due in this matter as the phone is
advertised as having Bluetooth capabilities on both
Nokia's and 3UK's websites. Having to wait at the
earliest until the end of May 2007 is outrageous."

You can only get the phone unlocked via 3. Usually you have to serve the contract (12 or 18ths usually) before paying something like £30 to get it unlocked. However, another user on here seems to have got it done for free and during the contract as Nokia technicians have requested it in order to fix the phone.....you could always take the route which invalidates your warranties but lets you get the latest firmware. Plenty of posts around about how to do this but some 3 things won't work afterwards due to losing the 3 certificates. Just read around this and other forums for info.

Just a few comments on your problems with three. Firstly i have had much experience with complaining to three, its apparent that three customer services & technical support have some major problems. I have spoken to both departments of seperate occasions & the staff obviously need further training.
They have contradicted their own statements on many occasions & use terms which could mean various things, just try calling them and asking them for x-series & asking some technical explainations, they've done very poorly in that and many other real issues customers have.
As for the technical problems with the nokia Phones, there are as always some problems with each release of firmware, so far i've only experienced that the email alert does not sound, so its silent. Apart from that speed appears normal however, i wish there was more memory to multi-task, some apps eat up the memory so easily u might be able to run only 2 or possbily 3 apps (with the risk of low memory & apps being shut down on their own) i find a bit poor for such an advanced phone that can do so much & cost as well.
While the problems with the 2GB memory & speed menus does not seem acceptable, im really not sure what the root cause is, whether nokia design, three firmware or third party apps, many people have various problems, to get to the root of these problems neither nokia/three seem to be able to offer the customers very much.
I have and am using a N73, the same one which was on d original firmware now on the new three firmware. The phone runs fair, with a 2GB memory card & many installed third party apps. From problems people experience there is something, either hardware/software that is causing huge problems.
I'm interested to know the complete history of your phone & firmware as well as what apps you install & if the same problems occur immediately after a firmware flash.
Another possibility with the memory as you might be aware is manufacturer, if you've ever built a pc in d old days with using SD RAM, it was sometimes such a pain to get some memory chips that would work with some motherboards.
I got my memory off ebay & this aint d first & it works great no problems on any firmware of the N73, generic or three. So perhaps we can discuss what might be different with your phone, if i had so much problems i would attempt to ask for a replacement but im sure nokia wouldnt make it easy...
As for bluetooth, i dont use it much as its slow & headset qualities are not good enough for me.

They definately do need training as even when I became aware that the V3 firmware was out on the 12th Jan 2007 due to a post on the Nokia Discussions forum, 3 CS still said that V2 was the only one available. It seems that there is a complete lack of communications between 3 and Nokia and internally within 3.
They have contradicted their own statements on many occasions & use terms which could mean various things, just try calling them and asking them for x-series & asking some technical explainations, they've done very poorly in that and many other real issues customers have.
They did not use terms which mean many things rather they just kept repeating the same stubborn lines. One of their replies was along the lines that as long as the phone works with their services they do not care if the features of the phone work or not. I replied to them, if that is the case they should only sell their own make of phones. They never answered!

While the problems with the 2GB memory & speed menus does not seem acceptable, im really not sure what the root cause is, whether nokia design, three firmware or third party apps, many people have various problems, to get to the root of these problems neither nokia/three seem to be able to offer the customers very much.
I downloaded Super KO Boxing from Planet 3 and it has crashed several times. I have to turn the phone off and on again as the application otherwise stays open.
I had three Mymemory 2gb 133x Pro minisd cards in total. This card meets all the SD standards, has the same voltage range etc. The first one was a duff one and the replacements formatted okay in the phone but then the phone did not recognise them and then my computer did not register the cards. That was with V2.0628.0.0.1 firmware. Mymemory said it sounded like a firmware issue. MobyMemory told me to upgrade to V3 firmware before getting a 2GB minisd card. Currently I am waiting on a 2GB 133x OEM minisd that I have ordered from fastmemoryman on Ebay.
Nokia Executive Office lied about the following:
"With regards to the 2GB memory card, we have reviewed some Nokia information on the internet, and have found that the 2GB memory card is not recommended as compatible for this handset, as although the information will be transmitted to the memory card and formatted there, the reader capacity of the handset can not facilitate the full information on the card due to its size. This has nothing to do with the firmware on the handset."
Nokia Moderators on the Nokia Discussions forum said that they had checked with others within Nokia and there was no such information stating the above. Nokia sells its own 2gb minisd card and states that it is compatible for the N73!!!
I would think that nowadays if the memory cards meet the SD standards and have the correct voltage range then any card should work in the N73
There is a known Bluetooth problem with V2.0628.0.0.1 this has apparently been fixed with V3...... firmware although I am waiting for my new memory card to arrive so I can try Navicore and my Globalsat BT338 Bluetooth GPS device out.

Do you know why when I go to use a Yahoo program it says I have to purchase an Add-On pack? I ask as I am supposed to get 512MB of free Internet access per month as I bought my phone in October- offer said free internet access and when I checked with 3 CS they said it was a 512MB limit and I would receive a SMS when I reached it each month.
Why does it tell me to purchase an add-on then?

That is interesting, a friend bought a three contract before summer & he didn't get any data access, i bought in august i got the free internet 30 (30MB of internet data). You got 512mb in october, can anyone also confirm if a new contract on three's £45 deal includes the xseries silver data package?
I've not experienced much hassle with buying add-ons, i have read that this could be (sorry again) due to three, if you are entitled to a 512Mb data allowance, you will be able to surf on your mobile, use yahoo, msn, & whatever u like pretty much. If its always asking to buy an add on i think u need to call three, tell them its not working & they will try and update it (no doubt they will say switch off and on your phone first, lol)
was your 512mb Mobile data, i ask cause they have that web & walk which i beleive u can use on the PC as well, but there is a difference.
Urm... not sure about games, i dont buy from three, i use my £5 spend i use it for other stuff, music & videos. Your game from three sounds like a pain... perpahs i'll download and try it & see wat happens.

Perhaps there is just a slight fault in the Boxing Game. Had Doom RPG play up too- I got that from Planet 3 as well. Hasn't for a while. I had saved the game prior to entering a sector. When I later went to play the game and continue with it where I left off, it started to load and kept crashing. It kept doing that over and over again. In the end I started a new game. It has not crashed since. I got Doom RPG after the V3 upgrade from my local NSC.
I have copied and pasted here part of one of my previous posts (from 9th November) which answers the data allowance:
"When I ordered from 3's website in October the offer was worded as free unlimited Yahoo Go web acess. 3 Customer Services contacted me today due to my query regarding the web and free MSN Messenger access. I was told that MSN Messenger is free to send and receive data but there is a fair use policy. After a discussion with CS regarding the statement of: free unlimited Yahoo Go web acess on the web page when I placed my N73 with Direct 1400 package at the end of October, he queried it for a few minutes as I said that it was misleading if I had to pay extra for data as access to any web page requires the exchange of data. He got back to me after a few minutes and said that I have 512MB per month of free web access. I said so this means I can surf anywhere on the web with my phone and use 512MB of data for free each month and he replied YES!
Note: if you ordered a similar package in November, the web page now states unlimited yahoo go web access. You probably will not be entitled to a free data allowance of 512MB as they have omitted the word free from the web page containing the N73 and Direct 1400 package. "
