On the N73, does anyone know how to turn off the annoying 3 'services' bar at the bottom of the screen?

It takes up so much space and must be killing my battery with its incessent scrolling.

I know, bit annoying isn't it? The only way I've managed to get rid of it is to stop Active Standby. It's not like the N80 where you can just lose the scrolling banner. Not sure if anyone else has managed to get rid of it by itself. Maybe we'll have to wait for a software upgrade...

Im sure there is a way to remove it. I cant remember how but i did remove it from my 6280 when i had one. Perhaps you should try looking in display settings.

If yours shows "More" option under the banner for the left button, select this and scroll down the options and select other, then select stop viewer.

Just thought id mention, I was flicking through the booklet that comes with the n73 and noticed theres a picture of the phone with the active standby screen and there is no ad banner in the picture.

So this is either a mistake as the ad banner should always be present or 3 just overlooked the matter altogether when playing with the software.

I think 3 just didnt think it through properly, The software they have put on is not completly compatable with the N73. I have spoken to a nokia technician who says if you take your phone to a service point, (check the nokia site for your local one) They will flash the firmware for you so it has the latest firmware and no network branding. Which = no service bar! best of all they said they should do it for free!! Im gonna try it in bluewater tomorrow. So ill let you know.

According to Nokia, the N73 needs unlocking first, which 3 have to do. To obtain the unlocking code, ring 3 and:

1.) Pay the remainder of your contract
2.) Pay £15 for the unlocking code

...and then the Nokia's generic software will make the MMS and other 3 services not work and manual settings are not available from 3 or the Nokia site. Looks like we're screwed and stuck with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How dare 3 overlook such a thing and force the advert upon us. I wouldn't mind so much, but the calendar will now only display up to three events for the day, even though there is room for more.

I'm still within my 7days...may leave them yet :-)

If you just want your calander to come up, then why don't you disable Active Standby and then press either left or right (can't remember which!) to access your calander.

I know the whole Active Standby/Instant Viewer problem is a bit annoying, but surely this shouldn't distract from an otherwise great phone.

And you never know, if enough people complain then perhaps a future Firmware update will correct this.

gpm13
15-09-2006, 04:01 PM
go careful though - if you put the generic nokia firmware on your phone, you will lose the 3 certification which is needed to run apps that come out from 3 - like msn (when it eventually comes), mobitv, premier scores etc.

Spud1
15-09-2006, 04:21 PM
yup if you get it re-flashed with just the nokia firmware - that is remove the 3 branding - then you are technically breaking your contract..and you lose all your 3 settings etc.

It also invalidates your warranty - I phoned up a couple of nokia centres today to see about getting it done, and while they are happy to flash mine to the latest software with the 3 branding, they would not flash it to remove the branding without it invalidating my warranty ( I would also have to pay to get this done, whereas keeping the 3 branding is free )

I'm still hopeful that 3 will notice the problem and let us turn it off though :) I spoke to 3 customer services this morning and they said they are working on an update to allow us to turn this off, and that I would be contacted when the update is available...not confident this will happen but I guess thats the best we can hope for until either a hack surfaces or 3 get their act together..

oh and as for the above cal solution - that's no good...the useful thing is having your next 3 (or 5/6 without the bar ) appointments etc shown on your front page - pressing the button to manually go through the cal is a pain...

Hi Spud1
What you have been told by the NSC is not right as I have had my N70 flashed with the Nokia firmware and doing this invalidates your warranty with 3uk only not Nokia.

If you tell them that you are having problem and you have had some friends that have had they phones flashed, and this has helped it should be done for free:) .

The thing is some will try to charge you for this , but as you said you will lose all the 3 settings

This is driving me mad. I'm very tempted to go with the Nokia firmware, but I don't fully understand what I'm at risk of losing. The chances of me downloading DRM-protected music from 3 is zero (I'll give Apple what little custom I offer in that direction), but I wouldn't want to lose, obviously, general internet connectivity, access to my account details, and messaging services (not 3 email). Can anyone explain exactly what I will lose if I somehow get this flashed? And what difference it makes having a Nokia warranty but not a 3 warranty? Thanks

Well I feel the same, this advertising bar is extremely annoying and spoils what is otherwise a brilliant phone. I'm afraid that when the 3 techs say they can't remove it I smell a whiff of b***s***. I can't believe, given the fact they modified the firmware to incorporate this abomination in the first place, that they don't know how to remove it! The only solution I can see is to deluge 3 with complaints until they are forced to do something about it and in the meantime switch off active standby and set up the shortcut keys to access your favourite apps. I know this means losing calendar notifications and the application launcher but i feel this is the lesser evil.

BTW (I know this is a slight change of subject) but does anyone know if it's ok to remove the Yahoo software from the phone without affecting any of the phone's primary functions? I don't use it and would like to free up some storage space. If I do remove it can I just cut the Yahoo folder and transfer it to my PC in case I wish to use it at a later date?

Cheers

I imagine if you d/l FExplorer, find the relevant files (the ones you're after are usually easy enough to spot) and they're not on the phone's ROM then it's a simple matter of backing up the phone before removal and simply using the 'c' key on the offending folder.

I've emailed 3's Executive office twice about this and got an answer back today which apparently fixes the problem.....

"Thank you for your email highlighting your concerns with regards to your Nokia N73. I have tried to contact you by phone to discuss this with you personally, but unfortunately, I have not been able to reach you.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of 3 for the time it has taken to respond to you. To remove instant viewer I have supplied the following process.

Process to switch off Instant Viewer:

Press the ‘up' button
Press the left key that reads ‘options'
Select instant viewer
Instant viewer service – select ‘off'

I can confirm once instant viewer has been switched off you will still have access to your calander on the front screen. Please be assured that your concerns have been passed on and will be dealt with accordingly. "

Now I cant tell which is 'up' button - 'up' on joystick just moves through banner and various shortcut items - so if anyone can understand the above, please let me know - I will call 3 CS back in meantime to see if I can get more detail.... STAY TUNED!

Its obvious to me that none of the people who are giving this "advice" have ever actually sampled the annoyance that is active viewer. They should actually try there non-fix and they would see the problem themselves. I just had a guy from "3" call me and offer me a K800i on upgrade which is on its way to me now. Not sure what Ill do with me N73!?? Think I`ll shelve it till they finally fix this instant viewer problem.

I think this is more of a case that the problem was overlooked in testing.

Its not like 3 dont let you remove it full stop as on the 6280 and k800 you can.

If enough people raise the issue with 3 then there is a better chance of them actually looking at it and if they dont, well its not like they have always allowed the active standby menu on Nokia phones anyway.

Well.... called 3 Tech Support who trotted out "Press UP button please sir...." when I asked where UP button was on phone (and that up on joystick just cycled through ad banner, calendar and application shortcut icons) there was a long pause followed by "Please hold for a minute" followed 1 min later by "Actually sir there is an anomoly with software on N73 which prevents ad banner from being removed except by turning active standy off - as many people have mentioned this, we are looking into matter and will hopefully contact you again soon with a solution"

So, my earlier email from 3 CS/Executive Office I received yesterday was all untrue!

I've only received my phone today, and was really annoyed by the Instant Viewer service bar... Spoke to tech support (ha!) who knew exactly what the problem was, and told me to run through the "Up key..." process, which I already knew didn't work from here. I explained this, and finally got the message through to the tech support bod, and they told me that I had to switch the phone off then on again before they were willing to help. Grrrr... I explained that this would achieve nothing, and it didn't.

Switched the phone off and on again, and phoned tech support back. Spoke to someone else who then spoke to a handset specialist who told me that there was no way to currently remove it, unless I turned off Active Standby. I said that I knew two other people that received updates today, so I knew this was a lie - even if it had come from a "handset specialist". She promised to call me back after looking into the issue.

Five minutes later, I had a call back explaining that there had indeed been an update, she read out word-for-word what the notification SMS said, and said that it's been sent and should be received by everyone with an N73 handset within the next 24 hours. I explained that I'd only had my handset today, and that it was an upgrade, and asked for her to check that it was the N73 showing on my account - which she confirmed, and she also confirmed that the update has definately been sent for my phone/account.

Here's waiting then...

benjimima - I don't think your actions had much to do with it, rather your phone just received the update.

I was on the phone last night, and my call got cut off - I went to redial and noticed straight away that the bar had gone.... My phone must have simply received the update. I didn't get a text or anything notifying me, but then they also did know that I definitely wanted this update.

Well this is a bone of contention! I have to complety turn off active standby to remove it. menu-settings-phone-standby mode-active standby off.

She couldn't say when I would recieve it, which seems like rubbish to me as she surely could have sent it there and then?

Trouble is the Instant Viewer is used by 3 as an advertising banner to showcase their services, so I can't see them being very keen to remove it.

Nigel

(Later)
I just turned on the phone today, and the Instant Viewer was GONE! :) And this happened WITHOUT me receiving a text message.

my N73 has been sitting in it's box for the last 2 weeks as I've been using my N80. I switched it on yesterday and still had that darn instant viewer. I then switched it off and back on and it disappeared. No text and it was only on for 2 mins to check before I turned it off and back on.

No. The handset support people are stupid. I argued with some guy for 15minutes and got knowwhere. Thats what you get when you outsource UK jobs to India. People who barely speak our language and dont actually listen to what you have to say. At least you can haggle with them for better upgrade!

yea i know what you mean, the noob from tech i was talkin to had no idea. he found it 'very strange' that i didnt have this option on my phone and kept making me look again when i made it clear it wasnt there

it ended with him saying he will escalate my call to a tech claim or something and that within 24/48 hours the bar should be gone as it would be removed on 3's end, this was AFTER i had clearly asked him at least 5 mins before that can the bar be removed at their end, to which he replied NO it can only be done on the individual hanset.

noobs!

i was just having a look and seen that u guys havin problems with that annoying advertbar on der 6280 so i will tell you how i turned mine off...

go to settings/display/stanby mode settings and switch the instant viewing to off ... that get rid of the advert bar and the active stanby off get rid of the radio and media player on & off its that simple

dunno if this will help anyone here

Hi Pikanyaa,

Thanks for the tip but this is the for the N73 and you can only get rid of it by turning off the Active standby;)

Warning to all:

I had a problem with voice activated dialling (stopped working) so I did a hard reset (*#7370#) and now unfortunately my Instant Viewer IS BACK.
:(

Now I've got to go through the hassle of getting it turned off again.

Clearly this feature can be deactivated by '3' remotely by sending a code to the phone, but it is active in the built-in software and returns when you reset. (If only we could access the code?)
