Good evening to you all.

I have had the Nokia N73 for about a week now , and I have to say it's an excellent phone. Ok not the fastest in the world, however full of features , and it hasn't crashed on me yet.

However , I am getting slightly irritated by not being able to switch between General & Silent , via the instructions given.

Sure , you can press the on/off button on the top , and then scroll down to silent and accept , however the booklet explains another method.

In the book ' Getting Started ' on page 12 it explains ' Useful Shortcuts ' Halfway down it explains " To switch between General and Silent profiles , press & hold #

I have done & tried this many times , however all that happens is the # comes up as though I'm making a call.

I can't really think what I'm doing wrong , as I'm just following the simple instructions. There are occasions when I want to put the phone into silent profile , and being able to do this by pressing one button would make things alot easier.

Can anyone with this phone , or maybe other Nokia N series phones possibly explain what I may be doing wrong.

Many thanks for any help.

Regards James

Thankyou for replying.

As I stated in my OP , I have tried what you have stated , and indeed that's what it states in the book , however it does not work by doing this.

Sounds strange.

Perhaps its a bug, take it to your nearest service centre or even into a Nokia shop if you have to.

Hi James,

You wouldn't be on Orange by any chance?

I don't have an N73 (yet), but did have an N80 (same OS), and the # command for locking the phone does not work as Orange use this to change between line 1 and 2 - even if you don't have it enabled they reserve it for this purpose.

Maybe this helps.

Can't wait till Orange get this handset - I tried in vain to get on with the N80 - a spectacular phone, but after 25 days of not daring to use any features on it as the battery would hardly last out the day it went back!

No I have it on Vod.

I went into the Orange store today, and they say before the end of August.

I went to the Vod store & explained to them , how the # didn't work as the book stated. They got out another 3 and tried , and they were all the same. They made enquiries & apparently this was missed off the phone on final firmware release. They mentioned that in time this could possibly be sorted if I sent it away , and got the firmware updated. Don't know if I'd bother with that though, as I have sussed a work around.

Seems crazy that this was missed though.

Sounds as crazy as Nokia putting a 860mAh battery in the N80!!!

Maybe by the time Orange release it there will be a firmware update that will sort this out (won't hold my breath though!)

What's your wourk around?

Instead of havibg to press the power button on the top half way down & then scrolling to Silent 7 then pressing select etc , I have put the profile icon on my screen so I then press once for that & then once for silent.

So much quicker and less hassle than the other way.

Oh how I wish I only had to press # though.

Of course!

I remember now that I mapped the profiles to the right soft key on my N80.

Funny how I only had the N80 for 3 weeks, but I still hit wrong keys all the time on the K750 I've had to go back to whilst waiting for the N73 on Orange. And that's after 4 straight years of SE use!!!

I guess it proves the Nokia interface is more my thing! And I only realised after 4 years!!!!

Typical!

I have that problem with mine too, mine was SIM free though. Firmware version is 2.0628.0.0.1 - what is the version on your phone? (press *#0000# to find out). Also as I said in another post when you type a number in during a call the right soft key changes to "video call" instead of back like other S60 phones

Good afternoon to you.

Yes , this is the same Firmware version that I have too.

I also have Video Call come up as right soft key instead of back.

The N93 I got has the same problem. Maybe it's a common problem in the latest phones

I've just tried my N80 with the latest generic firmware and # works without a problem. I don't know whether this was the case in the older firmware though. I didn't know about this trick - quite useful!

How strange. Will probably work in the next firmware release though, so not a huge issue. If it doesn't, Nokia will have to replace it!

its probably network dependant.

Hi everyone.. I have recently updated my Vodafone N73 to a newer firmware version effectively changing the standard version to the internet version. To do this I had to change the product code... the update worked great, the phone now has new features BUT... the product code was from the Hong Kong phone release (not sure what carrier) and now my # does NOT change between silent and general profiles anymore. As far as I know this is in fact carrier specific and now I must wait until a carrier who uses the # correctly adopts the new Firmware (which means I'll need to change the Product Code again). I wish this was a standard that EVERYONE used (forced by Nokia and Symbian) and it's the ONLY complaint I have with the my phone now... other than that, phone works great, faster menus, and new features. It's never perfect though is it? :-)
