I assume the sim you bought off ebay is a payg sim, and Orange use different sims in contract phones and payg phones so the answer is no.

When I ended my contract with orange and moved to payg they issued me a new payg sim. I asked them if them would send a 3G sim and all they would send was 2G sim as the contract was on a 2G phone.

The only way I could get a 3G sim was to upgrade on contract, or once I had activated the payg sim (which ends the contract) was then to upgrade again to a 3G payg phone.

For me I have not started my contract yet!!! I am waiting the delivery tomorrow. Is there any other way to convince them to send me 3G sim card as I already bought a 3G phone?? :(

If the company is supplying you the N93 on orange (although the N93 is not out on orange) why are they not supplying you with a 3G sim.

They ran out of stock and they have no expected date for 3G sim new stocks. Beside my PAC code that i want to transfer to orange is going to expire soon !!!

I dont know what orange's policy on new contracts and none orange phones is. But when you ring orange to register and activate the sim / phone (unless this has been done by the seller), you could ask them if they will send a replacement sim as you have been sent a 2G sim.

You can just buy a 3G sim from the orange retail store for £5, Then they will ring customer services instore for you if you ask them to transfer your number over as this is what i did. Otherwise yes an ebay bought one should work in the same way but would use Orange Retail Store as a first choice.

Did you do that on a cotract sim card or a payg sim card?

I have moved these posts out of the origional thread to create a new thread as the origional thread was for payg questions and you require help on contract sims

Hi Jateet
Not sure where you are getting your N93 from, it certainly wont be from Orange as they havent been released by Orange yet! As far as I am aware they havent actually been released by anyone yet, could be wrong though!

The main point is, whoever is supplying you with the 3G phone on a contract, has to provide you with a 3G sim, simple as that! There would be no reason for them not to.
You wont be able to get a contract 3G sim on its own for either an existing number/contract or a 'sim only' pack for a contract number.
You will be able to buy a PAYG 3G sim from Orange retail or on-line sales (not CS though)
above posters are correct, the only way with an existing contract to 'upgrade' to a 3G sim, is to totally upgrade the contract to a 3G handset/sim with a further contract term agreement.

Thank you pav
I've just noticed this.

Thank you guys. All what have been saidhere is true. The end of story was to cancel this contract, bought the N93 sim free and got a new 3G deal on Orange from other online retailers

Shouldnt the SIM automatically be enabled for 3G service when it's paired with the phones IMEI with Orange when the contract is taken out? I know this is the process for upgrades

The store didnt tell Orange it was N93 as it was sim free. They told Orange it was a 2G phone they sent me.

Unfortunately orange use different sims in their 3G phones and 2G phones. As in this case the contract was taken out with a 2G sim and was registered to a 2G phone, once a contract has been taken out for a 2G phone Orange refuse to swap the 2G sims for a 3G sim.

Orange insist that you wait until the end of your contract and then upgrade to a 3G phone, or you start a new contract with a new number and new 3G phone.

I have tried on numerous ocasions to swap my 2G sim to a 3G one but on every ocasion I was told I must upgrade or buy a take out a new contract.

Indeed. This is what I discovered on buying a SIM free Nokia N80.

I'd got stuck on a renewed contract thanks to an Orange scam (phone you up and offer a deal for discounts off your bill and "oh there's no contract", only to end up being on a new 12 month! ). Looking at their upgrades it would cost me £200 upgrade fee + the cost of the phone, so as I don't spend a huge amount on voice and text to justify a £40+ a month contract for a cheap/free N80, I bought the N80 sim free thinking I could just pop my 2G sim in...

... but I was wrong.

Whilst 2G works, the sim isn't 3G. Need a USIM for that apparently, and getting one on contract from Orange without buying a phone from them is impossible.

Orange have in fact withdrawn the N80 now from their line up so I wouldn't even be able to get my chosen phone from them. There's nothing actually wrong with the phone itself it's just Orange's own software has caused huge problems they've given up with it. The sim free versions are fine (especially with the latest firmware), and not burdened with buggy and locked down operator software.

The only solution now is to wait until my contract is up and get a 3G PAYG sim either from an Orange shop or from ebay. In theory I can transfer my number but I can't transfer the contract.

To be honest I'm probably better off on PAYG but I'm concerned about any potential limitations especially for overseas use.

My main need for this phone is for Internet use (emails and browsing mainly), and Orange's data rates are extortionate compared to the likes of T-Mobile (who do unlimited browsing*) but T-Mobile's reception isn't so good as Orange where I need to use it.

* - That's browsing only, i.e. web pages. Anything else costs extra, but probably still a lot cheaper than Orange.

Okay, I could just do without 3G, but I was hoping for faster Internet speeds and better quality voice calls (especially to other 3G or to landline) with 3G. I'm not that bothered about video calls etc.

Still, the plus of the N80 is it's WiFi also so if I'm near a hotspot or at home I can surf away cheap without having to use Orange at all and it's fast :)
