I've just got the N80 on vodafone and am having problems configuring email. I have configured the access point to use my wireless network and entered the pop mail server details for plusnet but can't connect. I can send via the plusnet smtp server without any problems.

The incoming mailbox type is set to IMAP4, I've no idea whether this is correct but the software will not let me change it. I get a message saying unable to change mailbox type once selected - define new mailbox. I followed a link I found somewhere on the net to add a new mailbox but don't have the option. I can't find anywhere to set up more than one mail account, is that a vodafone branding issue?

Any help appreciated

TIA
Mike

your problem lies with the fact plusnet use POP3 servers not IMAP4. are vodafone starting to use the walled garden like 3 by not leting you change settings i suggest you cal voda CS and see if they can tell you how to change or setup a new e-mal.

Thanks your reply, I suspected it was something like that but will call vodafone, before risking flashing with the generic firmware. I also assumed I could set up more than one email account but that doesn't look possible, does anyone know if that's possible on an unbranded N80?

Thanks
Mike

Cancel that! I've played a little more, deleted the original mail account and then created a new one, also found where to add new mailbox so now a happy puppy, no need to flash and very little branding on the phone so will leave as is.

Cheers

Hi, there is a protocol on most handsets which gives you a choice between POP3 or IMAP4. It should be possible to change this on the settings, I've not heard of any problems with the N80 settings being locked.

When it comes to these ports you just match them all up to your incoming server. The receiving port also needs to be matched up, again dependant on whether the account is pop or imap.

For example, if you were using Vodafone Mail the pop3 receiving server would be: pop.vodafone.net, the protocal would be: pop3 and the receiving port would be: 110 (universal to all pop accounts on the internet).

If imap was the receiving server on Vodafone Mail you would need to match it up as: imap.vodafone.net, the protocal would be imap4 (rather than pop3) and the receiving port would be 143 (the universal imap port on the internet)

The only difference is some providers chose to use the newer IMAP as their receiving server, rather than POP3 (a little dated now compared to IMAP)

Hope this helps to clear the difference up.

yep agreed, but for some reason the N80 doesn't allow you to change from IMAP to POP3, you have to delete the whole mailbox and create a new one. I was unable to find where to do this but got there eventually.

Thanks

Email on the vodafone network:

Your phone must have an internet access point configured which is usable for web browsing. Usually called contract internet.

If this is configured correctly the phones email client should work fine as long as your email SP is working ok and you are allowed POP access to the account from whatever external VF IP gateway your on.

For VBE you must have a compatable handset because of the Sync Manager client software on the phone and you must have the mailbox attatched correctly to your VBE account.

It's best to setup a My Vodafone account for troubleshooting VBE so you can log in and see if the mails are reaching that inbox.

You must also be provisioned at the network level for the push email service. The APN is push.email.net but for the purposes of talking to a CSA its a VBE SOC.

If all this is ok and your still having issue's call through to data support within Vodafone's technical helpline.

ok non techie reply - doesnt work through contract internet, Vodafone claim that N80 is not supported via VBE - tried it and provisioned by my corporate account manager (recently PACed over from my 02 personal number)

Also set up seperate intenet access point as contract internet is locked. Never had anyproblems accessing mail using 02 with my provider/broadband. Domain and e-mail through 123-reg; BB at home through Bulldog (boohissspit)

Dumped the push e-mail from vodafone after it didnt work at used settings wizard to set up mailbox which was the same as I set up manually

Does it matter what mailserver outgoing you use? Have used both vodafone.net and bulldogdsl to no avail

Hi,

I work at Vodafone. If you’re still having problems, I’d suggest that you drop us an email so that we can look into this for you. To do this, go to www.vodafone.co.uk, selecting 'contact us' then the email option, if you type the short code FIT135 in the body of the email this will automatically route you to a member of our email team who'll then be able to take up your problem with our technical department and get back in touch with you.

If you include your mobile / account number (this will allow us to check you're set up and provisioned correctly at network level) and also a synopsis of the problem, we'll be able to investigate this further for you internally and hopefully find a solution.
