MSN use is currently against the terms and conditions of web and walk, however they have stated that they intend to allow instant messaging later this year.
I believe the ports required are currently blocked, so nothing will probably make it work at this moment in time.

Consider a browser based option like Goowy, preferably one where you can recieve messages as SMS, but I'm not sure there are any free versions which could do that.

Well I got a new MDA Pro from T-mobile at the weekend. It came with the latest T-mobile ROM which included MSN. The guy in the t-mobile store said I could use it with Web and Walk.

It's great!

As long as you are aware fil that the T&C's state that if you are detected using non permitted applications they will send a warning and may either reduce your network speed or terminate altogether.

you can use msn on your handset for instant messaging etc, that's what we were advised yesterday BUT you cant talk etc via your webcam or use skype using the data card on your laptop.

Hmmm, they always said they were going to allow MSN, perhaps this has gone through faster than expected, that or they just received too many complaints.

ok, just reading the fair usage policy at work now. it states that you can't use your phone as a modem to connect to the internet.

are you going to use your phone with the web 'n' walk sim to act as the modem and access the net on your pda?

Hi thanks for the reply

Is it classed as a modem if its done over bluetooth ?

I did look at the fair usage policy but it says modem with a computer.

i assumed pocket pcs would be allowed as t mobile themselevs sell mda , sidekick and others as being able to connect to web/walk. these are mobiles which t mobile are selling as pocket pc/smart phone combinations.

Can you use the gprs and access sites which allow you to send free sms? Or are those sites blocked?

I understand if you ask for web and walk pro you can use a s amodem with a 2GB download limit and not being able to use VOIP which is fair enoght

Uh,,, forgive my ignorance, but does that mean if i get web and walk pro (the 7.50 a month rate) i can use msn and send sms to people? And T mobile is fine with it so long i dont over use my 2gb cap and stay clear from Voip?

Is that right? I'm new to T Mobile and i hav been using o2 and vodafone prepaid. Going to a line now and want to know how t-mobile is like. The thing is i want to be able to send international sms with my mobile. No point getting a billion Uk sms when they'll charge me like crazy for my overseas sms.

MSN is definately included beause i have been using it on T-Mob W&W for a few months now. SMS is different (unless you can do them over the internet) and it depends on your package - its nothing to do with W&W.

update

got msn to work with my pda and web/walk had it just under a month

dont tell cs though
;)

ive looked online at my data usage and nothing spectacular
msn doesnt use much data infact ive even started to browse and use it for newsgroups and still no sizeable increase

does anybody know what price web/walk prof is ?
it says 19.99 but carphone warehouse has it advertised as 10 pounds

i was quoted by t-mobile 45 pounds for a new connection with flext 35 and web/walk prof and yet it would cost me more if i had prof added to my current t mobile flext 35 account

Yes you can. You can even install the internet based SMS program on a Vario. I have purchased it from Handango UK - its about £10 and it works like a dream.

No problems whatsoever.

To clarify:

On a personal (ie not business contract) you can do one of the 3:

£7.50 a month, add web 'n' walk onto a relax or flext price plan. With this you can use a web 'n' walk handset (MDA/SDA/N70/W810i etc) to browse the web via your handset using what ever application that comes on there ie internet explorer, or the web 'n' walk (aka opera mini) browser. On the MDAs or SDA you can use the MSN messenger application pre installed on the handsets to chat over MSN. Terms of use DO NOT allow you to use this to connect a PC/Laptop/PDA to the internet via bluetooth, infrared or USB.

£10 a month, Add web 'n' walk professional onto a web 'n' walk handset. This allows you to do all the above, with the addition of using your handset to connect a PC, laptop or PDA to the internet (using the handset as a modem) Terms of use EXCLUDE the use of Messaging over internet protocol (Ie MSN, Yahoo messenger etc) And Voice over internet protocol (ie Skype)

£20 a month, allows you to get a web 'n' walk card on Web 'n' walk professional. All the above for web 'n' walk professional apply. So you can browse and email, but again terms of use prohibit instant messengers and Skype type things.

All of the above do come with a 2GB fair use policy. If you go over this allowance your service can be restricted, same as if you use things like MSN and skype.

Hope this clears everything up for you!

thanks for the extra informtation i didnt know there was a £10 option via web/walk

im considering getting the datacard option probably a silly question but would i be allowed to use msn with webcam etc or microphone. its not something thats going to happen often maybe afew times a month.

does any other network offer wireless broadband ? as cheap as t mobile but without the restrictions

paw83
22-06-2006, 10:43 AM
As it stands the terms of use say you can't use MSN at all. I don't know how detectable it is, on your head be it!

I think all networks off a data solution, but t-mobile is the cheapest by miles.

golden_balls
22-06-2006, 04:16 PM
so t mobile seem to accept msn on branded phones like the mda and sidekick but frown on others using it ? hmmm not sure if other people thinks thats a reasanable stance to take.

i could imagine t mob saying no use of msn with cam and microphone but u cant use msn at all full stop ?

paw83
22-06-2006, 06:29 PM
Whether people see it as a reasonable stance or not isn't really an issue... it's a service they offer, cheaper than most that's selling loads!

golden_balls
22-06-2006, 07:24 PM
yup thats true

i just hope t mobile and others are less restrictive over time

*crosses fingers and hopes t mobile plays gentle if people are found to be using it but not excessively* :)

I'm confused, so it's ok to use msn on an MDA but not on say a E61 on a standard WnW package??

if your on the standad web and walk option 7.50 then your not allowed to use msm on any device, but as all the mdas have msm , people are using it any way, like my self since april with no problems, well it hasn't been blocked yet
