I very much doubt anyone else will have a different firmware as the thing has only just been released

Although interestingly you've got a newer version than i've seen in other forums. I've only seen firmware released 31-03-2006. Can't remember the version number though.

His firmware is dated from Thursday, how strange?

But Gazza1975 did you not get your phone at the beginning of the week? Auto-updates?

Edit: Wrong month....DOH! My bad!

I don't think the N80 is really going to support auto-updates.

It most likey works like XP - when it connects to the internet it visits (In the Nokia's Case) the nokia update site or something and downloads it. I dunno seems most logical way

yes the 3rd edition supports it. But im convinced that Nokia has yet to implement this feature in any of it's 3rd edition phones.

Bet orange would have disabled it lol

Well actually that brings up a whole new point anyway.

Firmware is operator specific, so updates would need to be provided by the operators to be downloaded.

Additionally, it can't be done automatically when you connect to the internet, becauase what about data charges? It would cost a bomb, and you wouldn't even know it!!!

Yes, however alot of the new series 60 phones (like the N91 and N80) has wifi, so that isnt really a problem.

If you want a firmware upgrade, then you can just take it to your local Nokia sevice centre and they will do it free or charge (presuming its an unlocked/sim free version, otherwise you may have to pay).

Does new firmware overwrite the existing version, or, when updating a phone, does the old firmware have to be removed first?? In any case, if I take my Orange N80 to the Nokia CS and have it tinkered with, will that take with it all the things Orange put on, thus invalidating my warranty?
Edward, a very helpful CSR told me if I flashed a phone It would invalidate my warranty. I am probably showing my ignorace here with regard to software and firmware etc. And as bjh says firmware must be op specific.
Am I answering my my own question!

It would only invalidate your warranty if you had it updated to the 'Generic' firmware, for example to get rid of the orange homescreen.

You could have the orange version of the firmware updated when a new version becomes available without any problems or risk to your warranty.

And yes it overwrites the old version

So if your phone is orange branded you put generic firmware on would it come under manufacturer warranty (ie Nokia) , rather than orange and if any problems then, then you go to nokia

ratkat

Yes, your Nokia warranty would be unaffected, only the Orange one would be void.

DeniseR

That is reassuring as I would rather go to nokia than orange, so if for some reason my phone needed replacing would nokia replace it then not orange. Also where would your orange insurance stand, suppose you'd have say it was lost otherwise you'd have to return the handset and they would see what you have done

thay have told me it would invalidate orange care. but if you said it was lost they would never know.

Yes, but what you are acually taking about here is insurance fraud, which, if you get caught, will have a much harsh sentence then a broken N80.

bjh_101
13-05-2006, 11:35 PM
That is very true.

I personally am very unlikely to get it reflashed with generic software anyway. That is unless the orange software is completely and utterly screwed up. But if that is the case I probably would just return it and get my pac.

DeniseR
13-05-2006, 11:42 PM
The answer I presume is to take out alternative 3rd party insurance. chaslam I was not suggesting fraud I could never do anything dishonest, I was only clarifying a point, I hope you understand that please

DeniseR

No once flashed with generic software you will lose certain features specific to orange, I found that out with the n70
