Was planning on going with T-Mobile Flext for the N80 but after many an email and phone calls I have got it out fo them "we wont be doing this phone in the near future". They have the release dates for their "expanding" phone range up to Jun e and it isnt on that and isnt on the "testing" system either. Oh well!

So I am going to stick with Orange, on PAYG now but moving to contract.

Was in the orange shop not too long ago and the guy said they were expecting it any day/week now but does anyone know when this might be?

Any info would be great....cant wait to get this phone!!!

Well its definitly coming. While not listed in the phones section it IS listed in the new 'Orange Photography' area of their site:

http://www.orange.co.uk/entertainment/photography/setUpYourPhone.php?phoneselect=Nokia+N80+%28coming +soon%29

I guess the second link shows that they are getting ready to butcher it with their own software, but right now I don't care I just wanna get my hands on one of these beauties!!

i talked to my friend who works in the Orange shop in Manchester, and he said the news he is getting is the N80 will be released on Orange end of may or beginning or June. He said that is all he knows about the phone. If this is true im gutted because i was hoping to get the phone next week. I phoned upgrade line and they said i will be able to get this phone for £250 upgrade (i got another upgrade last month otherwise it would be £150) :(

matstrange

I hope thats not the case. I mean Voda have the phone on their site with April as release date. Surely Orange would wanna keep up with them so as not to lose customers to them??

orange do tend to release phones slightly late. You could try phoning orange : 0800 079 2000. I dont have a phone on me so I cant but if anyone does ask and post what they say here ( i am desperate to know a release date:D)

If you just upgraded last month then you will have to pay £250 plus the cost of the handset (which Orange don't have yet)

Some worrying points to do with the Orange website. The second link given (http://www.orange.co.uk/entertainment/photography/cameraPhones.php) indeed has the N80 but if you hover over the different points the pictures it brings up arent actually from the N80 and when it goes to the camera bit it says its a 2MP with 6x zoom, however its a 3MP and 20x zoom.

It looks like they have just copied it from the 6280 as the keypad is not from the N80 either. Poor show Orange.

Do Orange totally butcher their Smartphones?

I was in the Orange shop a few weeks back and the guy there who was showing me the display model (this was about 3/4 weeks ago!) said they were expecting them soon and then when I went in again about 2 weeks ago he was saying the same...the only details he was going on was that it was in its testing stage.

Wish they would follow Voda and just give us a release date!

20-04-2006, 10:17 PM
yeah but typical orange ,they mess about with the phone that much the other networks have taken all there potential sales,i mean the 6280 was orange phone of the month in march's catalogue its been on the website as coming soon for god knows how long, so i wouldnt hold ya breath about the n80 coming anytime soon.and you just know its goner have that sidebar that we all love to hate.

badboy_tim
20-04-2006, 10:31 PM
what is this sidebar? there are also quite a few topics about the orange homescreen or something?

What are they?

bcarty
20-04-2006, 10:35 PM
the sidebar is what orange put on the main display of the sceen on the lefthand side, thats similar to the active standby screen but no were near as good, and at the mo you cannot take it off.

badboy_tim
20-04-2006, 10:39 PM
anyone got a picture of what it looks like? Whats on the "sidebar".

The only phones I have had from Orange are the 6100 and the SE k700i (which was ****e) and neither had a sidebar.

Do O2 "fiddle" with the software of their phones as they have a good deal on at the moment...

Cheers

20-04-2006, 10:43 PM
all that o2 seem to put on is the start up screen and thats about it thats all tmobile tend to do aswell.were as orange and vodaphone tend to go the hole hog and plaster it with there software.

not a very good link but look at the display of the phone and thats what orange homescreen is like.

whats the o2 release date?

Their website just says May. I wouldnt take this as anything though as the 6680 and N70 kept getting delayed. o2 are usually last to bring out phones for some reason. You would think they would be the first to bring them out as they dont mess with the phone software or lock their handsets either

i was in the O2 shop today and thay are saying the week beginning the 15th May and their delivery day is a wednesday so its looking like 17th May in Edinburgh. He was saying their delivery date and the online shop should be just about the same.

I want to stick with Orange as their coverage is brilliant, however if they are gonna mess with the phone and slow it down etc. then surely it is a silly choice.

O2 said the 15th May, although I read somewhere that O2 and Vodafone might be delaying the release.

3 and T-Mobile wouldn't give me any information about it.

Nearly everyone at Orange say sometime in May, although I did speak to a lady on saturday who said that they have just finished their training on the N80 in the last week. She said normally a phone is available a few days after training is finished, so try next week.

This is not guaranteed, but its hopeful :)

No one at Orange has confirmed yet whether the Homescreen can be switched off on the N80.

Hello Everyone.
This is my first post!
Have spent some time in other forums, one th phone to Orange CS and in my local Orange shop trying to find out about a release date. Well The shop told me last week that a release was due in April (according to the Nokia rep). The guys were enthusiastic and helpful and encouragingly they showed me the 'dummy' they had locked away to get an idea of the size. Clearly shops are bieng primed for a release. Also it features in Oranges April brochure under coming soon. But then this was the case for that dreadful Pebl phone last year and it took an age to show. However, I spoke to 'a new friend' (I hope!!) at CS. I was told It was not showing on the system but she would let me know when it did. Yesterday I phoned the shop to be told by a different person that it would be at least next month, indeed, it was suggested that it could have some glitches like the 6280 (I think) which was apparently recalled! and that was holding it up the N80. Defo a blagg, but other forums have noted glitches with the software (eg: mobilereview) so an element of accuracy. I decided to phone Orange CS straight after...not my friend.....I was told that it was going out in May and that there was no explanation as to why. The guy who was fine, admitted no one had a clue. He ironically mentioned that the 6280 (I think again...damm!) was showing on his screen for a release that day....not where I live I thought! He mentioned the N91. I asked which one would surface first? He laughed. So did I. Nokia got the blame it seemed! humm.
I reckon we are looking at the end of May but it wouldn't surprise me if it got to June! Some forums have speculated that a futher hold up could be encountered for 'Upgrade' customers as the phones are shipped in batches that have sims that have priority for New Customers. It was suggested upgraders either pay alot (N70, I was told was only! £70 when it came out) or they have to wait for phones to arrive that are set up for them. This could be utter rubbish, but that's what I read last week. I hope this isn't the case cos I'm on Prem 600 and have been told I can upgrade now for free.....bet that changes if demand is high for N80! Look at the recent chaos over the SPV M600. Lots of dummies in shops no phones in stock. Currently I use an M500, and enquired about upgrade. Was told shops had one or two in then they sold out! Very odd. My hearing aint great but I swear I heared one phone trainer say to the other, after a song and dance had been made over cheching in the back for stock for a customer, "Well Done". The customer had left after being told there were none in stock. Have worked in retail, so felt sorry for the staff who have to be creative in order to prop up woeful stocking from those 'above'. Made me think, if it comes out in May.....will the same thing happen to the N80. Of course this again could be total garbage and my fears are unfounded. Still was quite interesting!
Incidently, many early uses from other parts of Europe report the camera is crap on N80. Video better on N70. Perhaps a firmware update may fix.
Hope above ramblings help a bit.
Kind Regards to all,
Marwood.

Yeah if you read the Orange Homescrew topic in the Orange 3G section (http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=22577) you will see that Orange said they would make the homescreen removable on all future phones but I am currently in contact with Orange regarding this matter.

They also give a link to a reliable flashing service, costs £20 and they put the latest Nokia Firmware on it for you - not sure about the legality of it all though? It will certainly void any Orange Care things though.

Lets just hope it comes out soon...

Email 2

I replied with (something along the lines of),

In reply to your previous email I was wondering if my wording had been confusing. I meant to ask if the Orange Homescreen can be turned off - not removed as I have previously asked. I refer to ther following email about the Homescreen visibility;

Dear Mr.

Thank you for your e-mail to Sanjiv Ahuja, Chief Executive Officer of
Orange. Sanjiv has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Orange software is added to our handsets to provide additional
functionality, such as the ability to have a second line on the same
handset. However, we have listened to the feedback of customers like
yourself and all future Nokia handsets launched on the Orange Network will
have the Orange Home Screen function added but with the ability to disable
it.

Currently, Orange cannot retrospectively fix handsets because during our
testing, we found there was a probability that some handsets could become
disabled. So rather than risk leaving customers with non-functioning
handsets we decided to install a new software package on all future new
phones.

Orange does not recommend the removal of the software by Third Party
companies and cannot be held responsible for any damage caused to the
handset if this is attempted.

Whilst I appreciate this information may not be entirely to your
satisfaction, I trust you consider the action we have taken to resolve the
Orange Home Screen problem to have gone some way to restoring your faith
in Orange.

Yours sincerely

I refer to the 2 statements above and in response to your previous email I do not see why the Homescreen is not removable when previously stated it will be. the

Could you please tell me why this is not the case as if it cannot be disabled, and can only be removed by using a 3rd Party Service, then my choice to stick with Orange does not look likely as all I have ever experienced and heard about the Homescreen is bad.

Thanks very much,

Dear Tim

Thank you for your mail about turning off the Orange homescreen.

Unfortunately this is a feature of the Orange software.

As far as we are aware there is no way to remove it. The software installed ensures the handset works to the best of its ability on our network. Although part of the software is not for the use of the handset ie; the bar on the homescreen. There is no Orange approved update to have the left hand bar removed.
I would also recommend against any 3rd party software to remove this or any other feature as this will void your handset warranty.

I trust the above is of assistance.

I've just had the following reply from Orange:

Dear Bradley

Thank you for your mail.

Please be advise that it is not possible to completely remove the
Orange homescreen from the Nokia N80 as this is part of the Orange software
which is installed on the handset.

Removing this would invalidate your warranty with us and any
difficulties you experience would need to be queried with Nokia.

I trust this is of assistance.

my main reasons for buying are wifi and sip, My office uses sip for its phone lines (a home business) and the idea of answering calls in any wifi hotspot sounds good for me.

do you know of any good voip/ sip applications for s60? (either 2nd or 3rd edition)

Sorry, I don't Know about that.
I've been checking out the 'N80 Space' thread (link below I hope) for any news. Not much about Orange, but may give some indication as to release generally. Some discussion of N73 there too. Well....it helps to pass the time doesn't it, along with 'Deal or No Deal' on C4.
Friend at work showed me his new 6280 on Voda. Said he's been with them since 1989 and he loves em, less 'homeshafting' perhaps?

No doubt there's more that I've missed? What does CPW's "fresh" network use?

3 use O2's 2G network when 3 users are out of 3G range.

O2 and 3 have seperate 3G networks, so it doesn't have to be the same.

My Bad! Sorry.

I just ordered a Nokia N80 from onestopphoneshop.co.uk on Orange with Free next day delivery! I couldn't see any indication of it being out of stock or anything...?!?!?

Either way, they've authorised the transaction on my credo (£39.99 on Canary 30).

I wonder if they are selling unbranded N80's with an orange contract? i.e. not ones that have been masacred by orange? Its anyones guess.

If i find out anymore i'll report in..

Had a look it says 'pre order for delivery from start of May' at the top of the details.

39.99 is a lot less for the handset than I would expect on a £30 a month contract.

This is the latest reply i've got from Orange:

I can confirm that the Nokia N80 will be released with the Orange
software installed and, as far as I am aware there will not be an option to
remove the Orange homescreen.

It may be possible to "flash" the phone back to the original Nokia
software but please be advised that this will invalidate any care or
warrantee that you may have with the handset and it is not recommended by
Orange.

Hi, this is my first post on the site but just to let you all know, I ordered mine through one stop phone shop last night on the Orange canary 30 deal and just called them to ask a couple of questions, according the their customer services dept, they are expecting the phone to be posted out next week and it will only be in silver ( i asked about black but it doesnt seem they are getting any) I've taken it with a pinch of salt as it seems to have taken so long to come out nothing would surprise me, but I cant imagine a big phone supplier like them would put it on their site and take pre orders without having a realistic release date, but I'll just have to wait and see and maybe next week I'll finally get to see my N80:D

Will do. I so hope it comes, although i'm still a bit unsure.

I will make it my personal mission to destroy onestopphoneshop if they've lied to me! :devious:

Strange how retailers who are "part of CPW" have them, yet CPW claim they don't have them...

And speaking to one of the managers in my local O2 shop today, O2's apparently not ready with the phone yet as they're doing software testing with Nokia to ensure it's compatable and works ok!

Conversation with Orange CS yesterday. Release in May, no idea when due to "problems on the network". I asked if this was due to the "dreadful homescreen". Tone of CS rep changed from jovial to serrious, "Well it hasn't caused any problems on our other phones so it wont be down to that". Great stuck with it!

Might be due to the photography softare they are putting on there, to allow you to upload pics straight to your online album?

LINK Here (http://digital-lifestyles.info/display_page.asp?section=cm&id=3178) I agree, probably a main cause of problems/ testing

My brother works for an Orange upgrade call centre (for a 3rd party not Orange) and he showed me the stock list which just came in today and it has the N80 on there (for £307) and is apparently in stock. He's been ordering them for customers all day but we'll see if they actually arrive from the supplier tomorrow...

What's the "£307"?

Is that a trade price or end user price, and does it include VAT?

£307+vat is only a couple of quid more than the estimated euro price, so if it's the end user retail price then ~£360 seems good and I'd definitely buy one. Even if it's the trade price I guess they could sell them at around £408 (which was the euro conversion price +vat) and make around £40-50 profit per handset.
