HELSINKI (Reuters) - The world's largest handset maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday six of its new smartphones missed their planned first quarter shipping deadlines as it works to sort out their software.

Company officials said the models -- three of its multimedia N-series handsets and three E-series phones aimed at business users -- would start shipping to customers in the near future.

The company's premium music phone, the N91, will start shipping this week, Nokia Multimedia division spokesman Kari Tuutti said, adding that the N71 and N80 phones would start deliveries in the next two weeks or so.

Nokia had originally planned to have the N91 in the shops in time for Christmas last year, but said in September it was delaying shipments until the first quarter of 2006 while it worked on some software problems.

The phone's 4-gigabyte hard drive stores up to 3,000 songs.

"Because the devices are pocketable computers, we need to make sure of the software," Tuutti said.

Pekka Isosomppi, spokesman for Nokia's Enterprise division, which focuses on phones for business users, said the company missed its end-March target to start shipping its E60, E61 and E71 models.

It was testing their software and expected to start shipments within the next few weeks.

The phones are part of the Finnish company's plan to win more of the corporate market, which is dominated by RIM's (RIM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) BlackBerry.

"The basic issue is really about the interoperability of various enterprise applications ... (like) email device management and so on," he told Reuters. "They all need to be cross-tested against one another."

Nokia unveiled the new corporate phone line-up last October and said at the time that it would start shipments in the January-March quarter.

The three E-series phones operate on a similar platform, but Isosomppi said the company was prioritising the E61, which has a full keyboard and has attracted the most interest so far.

"N71 and N80 phones would start deliveries in the next two weeks or so"

Expect further delays with a statement as vague as this.

yeah, hopefully it isnt a substitute for doing the software right in the first place, but some bugs are inevatable and going to the nearest nokia service centre isnt allways Ideal.

How is it?

The only definative date this release has given is for the N91. The others they use the phrases "in the near future", "in the next two weeks or so" and "within the next few weeks". As Scooby states these are vague terms.

I suggest you re-read it.

Ok Ok, 1st things first. Its isnt a press release to confirm that these phones are beinging shipped. Its clearly says "Expective to start shipments in the next couple of weeks". This doesnt mean anything in terms of dates.

Secondly, this doesnt mean the UK. From the looks of things, the UK isnt even mentioned in this article so dont get your hopes up just yet.

To be honest it doesnt really tell us anything we dont already know. We know the N91 has missed all its shipping dates in the past, so that doesnt come as a surpise, and we know they are holding it back due to software issues, so this isnt really anything new either.

All networks add there own flavour to the firmware so to why exactly are you singling out 3 ?

The reason he is singling out 3 is that they dont offer open net access, so would this acually be possible on three if it cant comunicate with the sources it need.

Some apps can be easily upgraded via the "3" access point even without open net access, e.g. The antivirus software on the 6680 and N70, it just asks you which access point you want to use then actions the upgrade, I'm hoping it will be a similar process with the N80 firmware.

Neither do T mobile. So your point is ??
ATEOTD the firmware is different for all the networks, hence many delays between phones launch between networks. Now if Nokia decided to address a firmware issue, that would surely mean the network in question then adding there stuff before release. This is nothing to do with open internet.

What is ATEOTD, I dont speak geek

The reason he is singling out 3 is that they dont offer open net access, so would this actually be possible on three if it cant comunicate with the sources it need.

which refers to this quote about 3rd Edition Series60 Symbian operating system:

T-mobile offer open internet, so I really do not know where you got that mis-information from.

:p What was that about T-mobile? Have you not heard about the new Flext tariff and add on what everyone is talking about? T-mobile have had open net access for a couple of months now.
Anyway, thats beside the point. The point is that if its upgradeable, it may not be able to access the area it needs as three is blocking it. Im sure they will think about it and obviously do something to make it work but it makes you wonder.

I don't know why 3 do this? it just makes people who want to access the net leave them... also i have tride to call other networks abroad using the 3 and 3 won't allow me to do this??? the good thing about 3 is you can download you voice mails using the 3G network for free and you get loads of minutes.... anyway i wish Nokia would hurry up with the N80 as i am sick with my moto A1000. i think i will go with vodafone or o2 this time...

You need to call 3 to get your phone enabled for international roaming.

That's not the problem, I can call the UK from abroad to any network within the UK as i requested international roaming. It's when i have tride to call other networks from the UK say in spain or portugal. 3 told me they only have contracts with some of the networks in those countries and if they don't, I won't be able to call people of those networks.. another down side to 3s service...

where has every body been for the last 6 months! you can get open web acces on three, they were the first to give 3G but were slow in offering data that was always an issue but now the only issue is price! -as with everybody else! there are 4 basic levels of service:
1) free to brows stuff, 3s own portal (and some other stuff like the antivirus as mentioned), 3s downloads in this area have a clearly marked price, i expect free firmware downloads to go here, it is in threes interests that are phones are upto date and working.
2)mobile web (£2.50pmonth): access to wap sites that 3 have okeyed (hotmail etc) (5mb download limit £2per meg after- can check in my3)
3)casual mobile web, as a above but no montly charge and £2permb cost.
4)wireless web (£15pmonth or £45pmonth depending on download limit) use your phone as a full 3g modem to acces the proper internet! -some phones need plugging into a laptop, but symbian phones can run the appropiate browser to get full internet on the phone, see the topics in the data section of this forum! -old news now.

When i was using 3s web service it wouldn't let me access everything, far from it. I wouldn't of be able to access this site or other forums using 3s network... i thought it was a waste of £2.50 if you ask me. yea u can go to main sites like yahoo, hotmail, etc. but you can't access the rest.

hmm, not sure what this means, when the 7210 came out it was advertised on bus shelters etc for well over a month before it hit the shops. but i do think the time is close also.

skam: as per my post the £2:50 package only allow acces to limited WAP sites, you need the £15 or £45 package to get propper websites!(and a laptop or compatable phone) but this isnt the place to discuss that, there is a forum to discuss threes download content here (http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/forumdisplay.php?f=170).

I guess we will have to wait another month now before the N80 is out. I asked around a few shops today and they couldn't tell much. Why do Nokia do this? i remember vodafone telling me the exact date for th toshiba 803

£15 is a lot for a web service for a mobile tho. i guess this will get cheaper as time goes by.

The n80 is out in a few European countries now and UK should follow shortly.

But the N71 support pages are also up. Coming soon has also been taken of the N range site and replaced with Available so im sure its release is immiment. Im a bit dissapointed though that the quoted battery life on the n71 is actually less than the n70.
