O2 has recalled its X1 handset following three incidents where the handset overheated while charging, leading to a significant risk of fire.

O2 took the unprecedented step of call barring any X1 handsets on 27 March, using its ability to block the devices by IMEI number, effectively putting the handsets beyond use. O2 said it sold a total of 140,000 units of the shiny silver clamshell since it was launched in September 2003.

The recall is the final chapter for the Maxon-made handset with a troubled history. Many users found the device was prone to crashing and suffered from poor battery life. Store staff reported high levels of returns. O2 switched suppliers to BenQ after the X1, seeking a new manufacturer to produce its own-brand X-series range of clamshells.

An O2 spokeswoman said: ‘We’ve been made aware of a very small number of incidents. We are aware of three in total. We’re taking it very seriously. [The recall is] just a precautionary measure.’
