Hmm, the N80 may have a major floor IMO in that it is a new edition of s60 it is S60 3rd edition and this is been done as a new platform! I am told that previous S60 application wont run, but need recompiling, not been backward compatible is a big design floor in my eye. Nokia will no doubt argue security.
Also on the nokia site it says "every S60 3rd Edition application must be digitally signed, the platform also offers greater security." http://www.nokia.com/A4118015 this is like on winxp when you install a driver, if its not digitally signed and approved my micro$oft it tells you it may harm your computer, but at least it still lets you install it! So I think this means nokia have to approve any software that will run on the phone (so they make more money), but as a consequence IMO less will be developed!
please feel free to disagree, it is the opposite of what i have written that i would like to be hearing, please include sources for infomation.

I can see where your coming from, but I do think its probably worth it.
Give it some time and there will be loads of software available for it.
Also, with all of these new symbian and phone viruses around what can be hidden in apps, its probably worth it. If you get a virus on your phone, there is no way to get it off (correct me if I am wrong because in not 100% sure, where on a computer you can just wipe the HDD clean and start over.

It all depends how it is handled i guess. the change appears to be inevatable for security etc, but its a pain that theres a lack of software now, it depends if the added complexaties of getting a product to market put developers off, or have nokia compensate by doing all that is possible to ensure that software is developed?
IMO the best piece of software for an s60 phone is tomtom, this software must be a great selling point for these devices (thats the main reason i have an s60 phone), but has the change to 3rd edition caused a headache for tomtom, or are nokia round there helping them? -I dont know!

AFAIK phone anti virus program can clear them up. also you can reformat your phone, but thats still not very helpful when your stuck needed to make a call! it is annoying that people still insist on making virus' to inconvenience peoples lives so much.

ok some more software has been written:
firstly orange mobile Pohotography (http://digital-lifestyles.info/display_page.asp?section=cm&id=3178) that will come preinstalled on orange n80's this automaticaly backs up your photos on a server over 3g.
and secondly:
SimpleCenter Media Application (http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20060417005064&newsLang=en) which will also be preinstalled and makes use of the UPnP so you can use your n80 to manage your media files in your wireless home, something nokia seam to be pushing on this phone.
edit:
done some more searching and here is the standard software that will come on the N80: (http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,86797,00.html)
* Quickoffice document viewers
* N80 VPN Software
* SettingWizard
* Wireless keyboard drivers
* Catlog application
and here is someones blog listing all the 3rd edition software (http://blogs.s60.com/seeintos60/2006/04/3rd_edition_software_out_now_e.html) (which currently has links to nokias 3rd edition games, and a screen snapshot application)
I understand the digital signing a bit better now thanks to the following: (taken from here (http://mobile.antonypranata.com/2006/04/10/yet-another-freeware-for-s60-3rd-edition/) )
"Mandatory signing is another big issue. Commercial developers have to apply for ACS Publisher ID, which costs a few hundred dollars. Then they have to pay the testing house, which costs another few hundred dollars. Freeware developers, like me, have to submit the applications to CellMania for signing. I have to wait for 6 weeks before I get my application signed by CellMania."
-so thankfully the freeware developers dont have to go through the same hassle as those selling a product, but it is still a hassle and delay for them, but should bring better product with less problems (especially security!) to us, its just still such a big ball to get rolling when you see the amount of software availiable for previous s60 devices.

nokia are writing some software for s60 3rd edition to allow podcasts to be automatically downloaded (this can be done over wifi), more details HERE (http://blogs.s60.com/mrktngman/2006/04/nokia_podcasting_application_f_1.html). sounds good to me, in the past all the best applications were 3rd party, hopefully nokia will get the 3rd edition applications ball rolling with some serious momentum.
and the popular 'oggplay' software is (almost) available for V3 now also (they are asking for testers so i presume this makes it in beta stages), link here (http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net/), need the satnav companies to catch up now!!

Yes I agree with you. Also with all the new nokias when they first come out they seem to be plagued with bugs. I will wait and see what happens. I have a n70 at the mo which I will pass on to my daughter if all is well with n80 and I purchase it
