Trust this is the best forum for this query.

I have the 3G datacard and Vodafone Mobile Connect install software as supplied by Voda.

Unfortunately, I am unable to use the software - as soon as I complete the first screen entry the software gives me a Script Error Fault.

So I then downloaded all 62 Mb of the software direct from the Voda web site only to get the same problem.

Laptop being used is a vanilla flavour Win XP home with lots of memory.

Voda customer support seem unable to respond even after 10 days.

My guess is that it is a Java script problem but knowing how to get around it is a different matter.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Hi

Make sure you have local administrative access. Also download Windows Script 5.6 for your OS from the Microsoft site and install.

Thanks for that - I'll try it tomorrow.

Fingers crossed this is the solution.

VodaGuy, I really thought you had put your finger on the problem. Anyway, loaded the latest version of Win Script - no difference.

Then I noticed that the error was being shown as a Director Player Error.

A quick Google showed that to be an out of date version of QuickTime, so the latest QT player installed.

But still getting the same script error message

Vodafone Customer Service simply recommends that I take the laptop to the nearest Vodafone store - that doesn't fill me with enthusiasm as well as being hugely inconvenient.

I thought so too!
At which point are you getting this error exactly?
Is this after the install off the software and on the create profile screen?

Can you create a normal dialup using your internal modem?

Yes, the software is installed. The script error message comes up as soon as the software has finished loading. But the first page of the software, requesting country and language, loads underneath the error message, so to speak.

If I complete the country/language settings and press the Next button for the next page of the software process, the Script Error message re-appears. If I select 'yes' to continue, I am unable to progress any further through the install process.

Can you create a normal dialup using your internal modem?

Well the laptop uses a wireless link onto my broadband hub and there is no problem at all. I don't have a dial up account with my ISP and, frankly, do not want to change my access arrangements. The idea of the 3G card was to use the laptop for some upcoming business appointments where I won't have wireless access.

Thanks for your continuing interest,

Hi

I appreciate that you don't want to mess up your setup.

However the datacard works as a dial up modem. Sometimes on winxp, telephoney services are not setup/activated, though for the life off me can't understand why you would have a script error. At that point off setup, a dun is being created - therefore it would be a good indication to test normal dialup.

Hope you can do this.

Thanks again.

For the avoidance of any confusion, you are saying that the 3G PCMCIA card is seen by the laptop as a dial up device? I guess that's logical on reflection.

I'll try and find time later today to approach the problem in that manner.

Ta,

P.

Checked the laptop.

a) The hardware device manager shows that there is a modem installed and it is working satisfactorily

b) Tried using it to dial out although without any ISP User ID, password or dial up number, the dial out obviously failed. But it went through all the normal actions and my guess is that a normal dial up can be achieved.

If only someone at Vodafone Customer Service could be bothered to take ownership of this issue. Frankly, it's enough to make me think of switching to another network.

Lest forumites wonder what the outcome was, just to say that on the back of a very generous act I am now up and running on Vodafone 3G. Hugely appreciative. P.

I am having exactly the same problem How did you cure it?

Hi

Had to manually set the connection as the software refused to install properly. Not an ideal solution. Best for you to email me. But if you wish to use this way:

Insert card and point to cd for driver install.
Once all installed, go to control panel, phones and modems, modems tab and go to properties of 3g modem. Got to advanced tab and fill this in extra initialisation string:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet",

Save and then create a manual dialup connection.
Username : web
Password : web
number to dial : *99***1#

Observe the lights on your card before you connect.
Red double pulse means you are on GPRS
Blue double pulse means you are on 3G
both together means you are not on a network and should not dial.

Now the software normally gives you information like your signal strength and the ability to change the connection to gprs only or 3g only which you sometimes may need in certain situations. Also the ability to change networks when roaming.

These can be done manually but via highly inconvenient means.

If I could get more information from you, I could offer a better solution.

Cheers

I have just got a 3G data card from Voda, and experiencing the VERY SAME ISSUES when trying to install the software.

As soon as the software runs, I get the "Director Player Error - Script Error. Continue?" message. I click yes and I come to the first screen. However, when I have made my selections from the two drop down boxes (United Kingdom, English), I get the same error again and can not go any further, even when I click 'yes' as before!

I phoned Vodafone, and they told me to go to a Vodafone store, with the laptop and card! But, I have to ask myself 'what the hell can they do?'!!

Can anyone help with this issue? I have downloaded the latest QuickTime, Microsoft Script and DirectX.

Paul

Just out of curiousity, do you have Nero installed on your laptop?

No - in fact I have very little installed on the laptop. I have however resolved the program, by installing version 9, as opposed to the Version 7 that came on the CD!
