View Full Version : I own a Nokia N80!!!
Sorry might seem like bragging but its not supposed to be.
Just got my N80 from speedy and without a doubt - IT ROCKS!
Small, phenomenal functionality, and looks good (I think - alot better in reality).
Purpose of this thread: if you have any questions or requests to test it out please ask - more than willing to help.
Many thanks Speedy - as you know very pleased.

Is it as good as all the reports then?
What is the slide function like? and how do you rate the quality of the screen then?
Been waitin on this phone for a while now..what are the chances of testing it?
;)
Well, in my opinion it is.
Slide function does not miss anything for not being sprung. The slide is weighted and smoothly opens and closes, snapping into place in the top and bottom. Perhaps 1 criticism is the top half seems a little wobbly to the main body of the phone.
Hard to find faults in the screen, it is near perfect (when looking at the main menu system under very close scrutiny it is just about possible to make out edging on the icons - but this is magnifying glass stuff). With professional photos downloaded to the phone you cant make out the pixels - the photos look as good as they could be.
What do you mean by "...chances of testing it"?

12-03-2006, 03:06 PM
Just a joke mate!
You asked if anyone required any tests..and i would be more than happy to test it!
Glad that you reckon the phone is up to scratch..cant wait to get mine.
Sorry for all the questions but are the keys easy to use when the slider is up as this was found to be a bit of a glitch on the prototypes..
and..
Have you tried the universal 'plug n play' yet? you can supposedly send data from the phone to your pc or hi-fi..
Thanks
NN
The keys are easy to use if you use the pads of fingers i.e. there is a very specific point on each key that makes contact with the circuitry - so if you press it with your finger nails there is not always contact. But the keys are very functional and quite useable - perhaps not as responsive as some phones.
Do not have any UPNP compatible devices (unless my computer can be setup for this) so have not tried - will look into it if I have time.

Have you had chance to play with the wi-fi yet?
can you pick up wi-fi hotspots and ftp files?

How about speed of opening files etc, i have the n 70 and it is ridiculously slow really hope the n80 isnt the same, could you confirm
?
what network are you running it on?????
I'm hoping to get it on voda, but want to make sure you can use mp3's as ringtones!!!!:squareeye
I have tested it on my wireless network at home and it connects no problem - fine for surfing the web. The wifi has an adhoc mode so I reckon it must be OK for hotspots. As for ftp I tried connecting to my ftp web site and as soon as I put an "ftp://" in front of the address it would not even go to connect and I could not find any other way of downloading ftp files (not sure if this is the correct way to be doing this).
I'm sorry to say that the speed of use is the same as the N70 & 6680 so there is a lag in opening files and small wait times.
Running it on Orange. At the moment the version I have is not letting me play any downloaded sounds (MP3's WAV's etc) - keeps saying "unprotected file - can not play" and also wont let me set as ringtones even though this is an option in the menus of the gallery - I'm hoping it is something to do with the pre-release software - have emailed someone to find out.

Very Dissapointing, the lag is around 5 seconds on my N70 not sure i can cope with it again.
Well such is the nature of the Nokia smart phones but don't let that detract from its features - its a very smart, functional little gadget - and great phone too!

Won't work until a new version of Tomtom comes out. N80 has a brand new version of Symbian S60, which unfortunately is not backwards compatible.
Edit: Just looked at another post of yours - you should know this already.

haha, yeah i was partly just stiring things, and partly hopeing that somethings (tomtom) would still work on s60 3rd edition as the only way to tell is to try it!
Yes indeed no applications yet for the Symbian S60 3rd edition - but when/if TomTom comes out for 3rd ed it will really boost its functionality - although I think it will be a bit of a wait for TomTom! I dont think S60 3rd ed is backward compatible with 2nd ed applications.

I've read that with the N80 you can update the firmware yourself with over the air updates rather then having to take it to a nokia service point, is this true can you update the firmware yourself? Also where did you get your nokia n80?
As it hasn't been released yet theres no way of telling - the phone does not have the update software on it as it is prerelease (as far as I can see - although have not checked but will do)-(only has the core software) and I doubt there are any updates avilable yet. But if you have further info that would be useful!
I got the phone from ebay - from a genuine seller!!!

I have 2 more Nokia N80's coming to me this week if anyone wants to make any offers. I sold the guy his N80 and as you can see he is very happy with his. Will only accept paypal payment and account has to be confirmed as I will only ship to confirmed address's so that I am covered by seller protection. Have been scammed twice in the last 2 months...Not for the N80's thank god.

Is the battery life of this better than the n90 ?
according to nokias website:
N90:
# Talk Time: Up to 3 hrs*
# Stand-by Time: Up to 12 days*
N80:
# Talk Time: Up to 3 hrs*
# Stand-by Time: Up to 8 days*
so no!
charging it every night should be enough for most, one thing i have found on my 6680 is it charges pretty quick, so topping up in the car gos a long way. i imagine the batteries batteries not going to cope with the wireless been on all day, but neither does my laptop!
Id rather live with the low battery life and keap the phone smaller, i have plenty of oppetunities to charge it and i keap a spare battery in the car just incase!
scoobystu2

Top up charging every night is however a sure fire way of reducing the lifetime of the battery and the abiliity for it to retain charge. Not something I would recommend.

Certainly as these phones draw more and more on the battery with vidoe, flash camera, mp3, radio we all may have to go back to the days of daily re-charging as specifications keep improving.

Yes but it depends on who your contact is. Its unfortunate, but its the truth, that people in the vodafone store dont acually know anything about release dates. Its the same with orange, 3, o2 and all the UK networks. Its like going into PC world last year and asking when they would have got a xbox 360 coming out. Most of them would have just guessed saying that they would have them in within x weeks or months. Its the same with phone shops. They are only told a short while before hand what phones they are getting in.
In sure if you dont want to be paying that much for one, then it wont be long to wait. Im sure that nokia and all the phone networks know that there is a demand for this phone, so they will try to bring it out asap. On the o2 website, it says may 06, so it probably under a month away.

I have read that much of the delays with these phones was caused by problems with DRM. It is being said DRM is meant to enable handling of such protected files on the phone, and not to limit use of any other formats. The fact that unprotected files were not accepted via bluetooth doesn't prove they won't play on the phone. Get them on the mem. card and tell me they don't work! :D

if the phone will only play drm protected files this means that you will only be able to use mp3 or wma files you downloaded from nokia or off pay sites. music downloaded using " peer to peer " will not play no drm information in the file. correct me if i'm wrong. i would think the same goes for vids youve converted to mp4 using various tools on the net.

the latest version of windows media player has drm in it as part of the software but you are not foced to use it by default, it is an option you can enable. this might be the case for the 6680 aswell. drm is becoming more common as a way of manifacturas protecting there products if the n80 has drm in the phone software and you are forced to use it? you can bet the next version of windows when it is released will use it. i am going to look into it closely before i get a n80

Seems the price is dropping every few days - £615, then £599, then £549 last night when it was showing as "sold out", and it's £529 now with "1 day". No doubt it'll keep dropping as the initial rush passes and they become more "in stock" all of the time and other retailers announce their pricing.

a couple of questions about this phone> the DRM on it, does it stop you from bluetooth or pc adding of normal music/ video files as some one some where said might be a problem is there the function for image on caller id is there video ringtones or at least one person per ringtome ie can u asign each caller thier own ringtone?
MP3 doesnt fall under DRM so that should be fine.
mp3 DOES fall under the catagory of DRM
i have a seV800 and it does not play any tracks unless downloaded from the voda site with the drm in place!!!!!!
the DRM is implanted into the phones software, so if a track does not have it, the phone will not play it .......regardless of the file type!!!!

Vodafone: 12 May, Orange taking orders now
I need to know...where do you pre-order it. I went into the Orange shop and all they could say was probably the second week of May but couldnt promise anything, or pre-order one.
Is it over the phone?
Does anyone know if we are going to be able to ask for black handsets over the silver ones?
Tim
Edit: Slightly worried that on the Orange website they do not show the N80 having WiFi connectability....lets hope they havent been silly and disabled it. In fact dont really matter as its getting flashed ASAP anyway :p

Does anyone with an N80 know if you can sync with your PC via the WiFi?
I had previously understood this to be possible (and one of the videos shown in the webcast when the N80 was announced seemed to suggest it too, from what I remember) but the list of "features supported by your phone" for the latest PC Suite on http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,75883,00.html suggest only USB, Bluetooth and Infrared.
Surely it should be able to Sync via wifi too? Even the "next generation of wireless connectivity" feature on the N80 page (http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?loc=inside,main_n80&lang=en&country=R1) makes it look like your N80 can talk wirelessly (and not just Bluetooth) with your PC.
Can anyone confirm this either way please?

Mobileshop.co.uk are quoting that they receive shipment on the 2nd of May. My question is; does anyone know where (other than a physical shop) i can specify the colour? I've asked mobileshop and onestopphoneshop and they are both useless telling me i can specify all i want, but they cant guarantee anything.

Expansys also have the black one listed (http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=136174), but it's only available "on request".
