Virgin do contract. At a push with them you can start PAYG and then change. They don't seem as picky as some of the others.

you could just get 3g PAYG? Without going into your personaly circumstances.. is your house is blacklisted you can write to someone to clear your name? unless of cause its a diff reason.. but we dont need to disccuss it on the web.
If you cant get a contract you might as well look for a cheap PAYG network that 3g. Each has its pros and cons.

why would a company in their right mind not do a credit check?
If you have bad credit rating for some reason then I am afraid pay and go is the best option and probably the safest option at preventing you racking up costs and not being able to pay.

Sub-prime mortgages and now sub-prime phone contacts :)
Seriously, there are dealers who will sign people up in the hope that they will stay long enough to get their commission. They are slowly being weeded out by the networks. But, like weeds, others keep growing.

Might be worth requesting your credit file (statutory charge was £2 last time I did it about 6 months ago )
The following three credit reference agencies operate in the UK
Experian http://www.experian.co.uk/
Equifax http://www.equifax.co.uk (redirects to UK home on equifax.com)
CallCredit http://www.callcredit.co.uk
Hope this helps but be warned these companies will try to sell various credit monitoring services but all you want is your credit file which you are entitled to see by law but they are entitled to charge you the statutory charge.
Hope this helps.
