View Full Version : Do your text messages also apply as data?

I remember people here talked about data being included with your text messages. Does thats still apply and with the above offers? Thanks.

Anyone know?
I'm thinking of getting one of these offers.

I've just read through the T&C for this offer and apart from stating that a 'standard' message is 160 characters long it mentions nothing about data content at all. Obviously MMS messages are data based (100kb max) but unless they have hidden away the relevant bits I cannot see how or if they are linking Text messages to data limits.
The easiest way to be sure is to ring CS, get the persons name, and then ask them... at least you have a come back if they do sneak a data charge onto the package.

Woot, just ordered the 25 quid a month one and the text messages can be used as data according to the guy I spoke to.
1000 texts works out as 120 quids worth although I forgot to ask how much data that would let me have.

just to clarify sms and data work off two diffent parts of the network
sms or text works via GSM (same as voice)
data uses GPRS (ie vodafone live, mms)
so unsure how sms and be part of a data bundle or data part of a sms bundle

On lots of phones you have the option to send SMS messages via GPRS
I have done it in the past but been charged the same.

Just a thought have a look at this.

I use them from time to time and it only takes a small amount of data to send

“Hi fdxd
Depending on what Extras Pack you’ve got on your account, you’ll be allowed to use this for data usage.
This is a list of the Extras Packs you can have and what’s included.
50 Texts = 50 texts or 16 picture messages or 10 video messages or 2.5 Mb's of data in any combination
100 Texts = 100 texts or 33 picture messages or 20 video messages or 5.1 Mb's of data in any combination
250 Texts = 250 texts or 83 picture messages or 50 video messages or 12.7 Mb's of data in any combination
500 Texts = 500 texts or 166 picture messages or 100 video messages or 25.5 Mb's of data in any combination
1000 Texts = 1000 texts or 333 picture messages or 200 video messages or 51.0 Mb's of data in any combination
It’s flexible to use as you can use it in any combination.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the clarification i appreciate it! :)

I don't think anyone has really answered the question, do SMS count as data. The answer is "no". It doesn't matter whether the phone is set for CSD/GPRS or UMTS. An SMS is not sent on a TCH (Traffic Channel) it is sent on the SDCCH (Control Channel) therefore a one off charge is made for the delivery of the message. Data is that is charged for as data is transmitted over traffic channels and therefore charged at the data rate/cost. So in summary, SMS do not count as data.

As midlands_lad said above:
If you have an extras pack yes you can use your text allowance for data. See: http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPayMonthlyExtraPacks
