The N411i may appear more advanced than the N343i but, apart from a more powerful 1.3-megapixel camera and vastly improved screen, the improvements are negligible.

To be fair, it is a solid handset despite its plastic frame. Although the keypad has a cheap feel to it, it does have shortcuts for easy access to features outside of i-mode. The main menu system is icon driven and a vast improvement on NEC’s past puzzling interfaces. It’s pretty straightforward to negotiate.

The 1.3-megapixel cam gives the handset the edge over the 343i and the pictures are pretty decent. The lens is prone to over-exposure, bleaching out highlights way too often, but it’s strong at colour definition.

Of the two handsets, the N411i’s display is more vibrant and dynamic, offering a respectable i-mode experience. Compared to the N343i, its design is quite bland and really plays the workhorse of i-mode’s first wave of handsets.

Pros

Brilliant and colourful display depicts the i-mode web pages vividly.

Cons

A pretty unassuming and drab phone with pitiful memory for storing your i-mode downloads.

Verdict

If NEC combined the 343i’s design with the 411i’s features (plus Bluetooth and a memory boost) it may have been a neat i-mode prepay proposition. Otherwise it lacks spirit.
