i'm sorry if this has been posted about elsewhere but i don't have to the time to go thread crawling. they asked me to upgrade yesterday with 2 months still yet to run on my contract, and when i asked for the N70 it they said it won't be out for another few months.. which is significantly later than other deals i've seen.. i had the same problem with my delayed d500 last year.. so how exactly do they expect me to stay??? and why do orange always get phones late?

^ You could probably remove it when connecting it to the computer and finding the hidden folders. That's where they keep the orange junk.

I have complained about this cruddy application and they said... "well that's funny, nobody else has complained!"

Surely it cant JUST be me that wants to see when I have a message WITHOUT faffing about with keys?

I will be attempting to remove the rubbish myself tonight!

Oh... I will also be thinking VERY carefully about taking my FOUR contracts with a spend of about £190 per month to another operator... who would you suggest?

Thats the problem, orange would be perfect if they did not do this to the phones.

They say nobody else has complained? Well i have EVERYTIME i phone Orange 3G Support. There are loads of other threads on forums on the internet where people say they have complained.

I really do not want to leave Orange, but they are giving me no choice. I was even willing to do an early upgrade just to get a Homescreen free N70 (hoping they had listened) but no they had not listened.

Ilooked in the phone thru fx explorer, i found that the crap homescreen files were in the Z chip which is actually a rom chip. So i don't think it can be deleted i think it has to be removed from the handset. Dam you orange!
If anyone knows how to get rid of it let me know. Its ruinin my themes:alien:

You can take your n70 to the local nokia service centre. Which most of them will gladly flash it with the original nokia unbranded firmware.

I had this done with my 6680.

Although this will invalidate your warranty with orange, nokia will should still handle the warranty for you.

In regards to gettin the orange settings for wap/mms/internet they are freely available off the internet.

Also if you ring orange 3g data support and tell them you have bought one sim free im sure they wud give you the settings u require.

Hope this helps

Daniel

i've managed to get an n70 on upgrade today for £50 (bearing in mijnd they are also doubling my minutes!!)

Any info on getting rid of this homescreen then?

Also, do pple think its wise getting an n70, or should i have waited to get the w800i when it was in stock?

Different type of phones. Shouldnt be overlapping. As one is Symbian with 3G. The other a standard phone. For music the N70 is well equipped. 512MB cards are very cheap now at under £25.

Phew - its a relief to know I'm not alone! Got my N70 today after switching to Orange from O2 - can't believe they've clogged the fone up with such lousy software. I'll definately be getting mine flashed if thats the only way to get rid of it. Fantastic fone though :).

If anyone else finds a way round the homescreen please let us know!

Hey, got my phone up and running ain't done video call yet.
Phoned Nokia Center, they say loads of people hate the home screen . When they flash it some things might not work , like photo messaging video, wap etc. But you just phone orange and just say they're not working and they should send you the sim update again.
But they said the n70's they've done have been fine, but they're findin it harder with the "3" networked handsets, they've got a dry crappy menu too Ha!
Getting mine done probably Monday .......... watch this space!

yeah totally. I like the phoen but i don't know if i'll keep it. Its just the same as my 7610 but with 3G (which i probably won't use after the trial)

Are people able to connect it to their pc ok? i'm having difficulty using the cable. the pc suite software just wont recognise it!!

Also, isn't the memory card just too small. Mine is already full and all i've transferred are some pictures from my 7610.

Does anyone know the best nokia service centre to go to in london? I've tried the carphone warehouse in oxford street before but they always wanna keep the phone for a few days, and i don't wanna leave it there for more than a couple of hours.

I got this phone from Orange yesterday and have been playing with it today and thought I'd missed something when I couldn't see my themes over the top of their awful homescreen.
Read quite a few posts on different forums that complain about it. Why aren't orange listening. If I can't get rid of it I will be cancelling the agreement and taking my money elsewhere.
I called them just now and the guy said I should be able to change the background through themes, I explained I had already tried that, he said they would need to send me a software update. I'm waiting...

I will post back the results but I'm not gonna hold my breath...

The only way to change your backgrounds is to go to an image using the image editor (or file manager) and then go into options and it will have a "set as wallpaper" option.

I don't think the homescreen can be removed by a sim update. That requires a flash update!

Hey guys,
Nokia Service centre is in Canary Wharf, well South Quay on dlr am i allowed to give phone numbers on these forums?
Took it in on Monday and they haven't got the software from nokia yet, he tried one of my n70's with the n90 software and it crashed the phone!!
Oh ****, so orange are going to change it on friday. so no problem there!
But the guy said when he gets the software for it he'll do it free for the inconvenience, but i'll be a guinea pig. I'm willing to risk it. So for now i'm stuck with it.
I think the way forward is Sim free phones, and sell your free upgrade phones!
Orange will do this forever now. Guy in nokia shop said that Orange are the worst and he said that all the crap they put on it makes the phone slow and causes it to freeze which is what mine does.
Bring on the N91 Sim free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! due march.:D

Connecting to pc, have ya uninstalled the old cable driver? I uninstalled the 7610 pc suite but kept the cable driver installed. Then the new cable driver just updated it i think and its fine. I had trouble with the 7610 one you had to do it in a certain order, like install driver then put cable in rather than cable in then driver install.
If not there might be a help thing on cd for it.
Memory cards on ebay for around £30 512mb. you need a different one to the 7610 which was a bitch i already had a 512! You need a DV RSMMC Card, (dual voltage reduced size memory card), Kingston is best that i've found

There are a few things that dont work and I had a tough time with Orange Customer services (or so they call it). I wanted to get a Analog clock on my home screen  ... what a joke:p . Apparently, after trying for 30 mins he came up and said that we cannot get Analog clock because of the Orange software.. so i went after him asking him to say that the functionality had been removed or the phone was faulty. (The dealer i got the phone from said if I return the phone, i will be charged £29 admin fee unless the phone is faulty :( ). Orange would not agree that the functionality had been removed by Orange :(

hey nimmat,
I upgraded to the n70 on orange the other day and was too very dissapointed at the piss joke of a home screen, they should have told me that their n70 was not the same as the one on nokias website. I took it back to the orange shop and he said that there have been lots of complaints but there is nothing they can do. I am going to try the nokia shop in regent st on monday, I know that it is a long way from guilford but if it works it might be worth it. I am concerned about wherther or not I will be able to get all the orange settings sorted. I will keep you up to date. I have been SO lucky - spoke to someone nice in CS Thurday morning - I would mention her name and extension but it would probably get her in trouble.......

I rang CS to ask what my upgrade fee would be - they told me £100. I complained about my Nokia 6680 (which I've had since July and am not presently using - I have a spare Sanyo S750). Lady said she would do a diagnostic on it for me - after me explaining the crashing and lost calls seems to be a clash of software between Nokia's and Orange's, she asked me if I wanted another one on Orange Care. I said no - save the money and reduce my upgrade fee if poss please (as I said I would just sell the handset myself if given another 6680).

So (this is where it gets REALLY good) she WAIVED my £100 upgrade fee (and she said she had put NOTES on account confirming this to be done today). She quoted me £49.99 for the handset, then Orange's payment system went down so I couldnt pay for the phone. Two attempts later, she rang me bang and said "I tell you what, for the trouble you've had I'll give you phone for FREE!!!!"

I received my NEW SHINY NOKIA N70 by courier this am and now its off to Sheffield to get Homescreen removed - and all its cost me is £20 !!!!!!

Well, I was reading all these threads the other day, and I had been through the nightmare of living with the N70 Orange Home screen for 1 day when I decided to give it back to orange. They said: No you can't take back a phone if you upgrade from an Orange shop. So everyone be warned. However, Someone at Orange told me that if you tell them you can't get 3G reception at your work/home they have to take it back.

If you can't be bothered to get your phone flashed, then use your consumer rights to get it refunded/exchanged quoting the 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)'. I got this bit from the BBC watchdog site:

The Sale of Goods Acts lay down several conditions that all goods sold by a trader must meet. The goods must be:

- of satisfactory quality
- as described

fit for purpose
'Satisfactory quality' covers minor and cosmetic defects as well as substantial problems. It also means that products must last a reasonable time. But it does not give you any rights if a fault was obvious or pointed out to you at point of sale.

'As described' refers to any advertisement or verbal description made by the trader.

'Fit for purpose' covers not only the obvious purpose of an item but any purpose you queried and were given assurances about by the trader.

If something you buy from a trader does not meet these conditions, you are entitled to a full refund if you return the goods soon after purchase. Otherwise you are first and foremost entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced.

These are the issues I found in 1 day:

1. It disables the shortcut key functions of the navigator button – one of the key design features of the Series 60 operating system on the Nokia phones. This results in having to press 5 buttons in order to send a text message, as opposed to pressing 1 button on a Nokia 6630.
2. It does not allow one to install themes correctly on the phone, as the ‘Orange Home Page’ does not update the background wallpaper correctly – this is another feature of the Symbian Series 60 software that is now incorrectly working
3. It does not allow the user to switch on “Active Standby”, as described on page 93 of the User manual that Orange supplies with the phone. “Active Standby” is a Key feature of the Series 60 platform that provides the user with more major customisation of the phone.
4. It creates an occasional problem when receiving notification of a missed call, whereby the screen flashes between the Default Series 60 screens and the “Orange Home Page”, leaving the backlight on bright, thereby running down the battery very quickly.
5. It unnecessarily uses over 1Mb of memory and decreases the responsiveness of the phone in normal operating.
6. The setting in the Clock program to switch the clock on the main screen from Analogue to Digital and back no longer works. It has no effect, as one can no-longer see the clock on the Home Page. This makes it difficult to read the time for anyone short sighted. This is another key function of the phone.

I am waiting for orange to respond. I can say that some of their engineers are aware and sympathetic to users complaints. I am leavig Orange after years, and I spend around £300-400 per month with them. They don't seem to know what to do to keep their customers . . .

I reckon some of you should jot a note to:

Orange Correspondence Department
PO Box 10
Patchware
Bristol
BS32 4BQ

or fax it to them on: 0870374 8129

If I don't get a reply I will contact the ombudsman.

Crudolf,

I had a lot of heated arguments with the orange customer services people regarding all these points. I had sent them almost the same point by fax and post but surprisingly, they DO NOT accept that there is a fault with the phone. They call it ENHANCEMENT. According to these w******, the enhanced software does not disable the mentioned functionalities (Active standby, Themes and Analog clock as the major ones) but the software causes them to not behave in the standard way. This according to them is not a fault and cannot be fixed... they will also not agree to get the crap removed.

returning the phone has cost me a bit of money apart from the customer services number to be a Mobile number and if I did not have 3 as my other phone, i would be worried about calling the help desk of orange from a non orange phone.

as a IT decision maker in my company, our mobile contract is comming up for renewal in february and I plan to call in orange to give some quotes... play around with them spoil their nights and eventually go with O2. I must take my revenge.

You mean you had agreed to pay £49.99 + £20 (to get the software removed) for an upgrade? My deal with O2 is with 8 months half price on 12 month contract.. ofcourse it is cash back but I also get double mins and text for the next 3 months and the phone was free/unlocked/no operator software.

But yes, you are lucky that you did not have to pay the £49.99 but you still did not get any free bits while upgrading the contract

When I upgraded my contract on 3, got a 6680 for free and 6 months half price on a 12 month contract. I doubt they still give this offer now though.

not to discourage you m8 but moving could have got you a better deal and probably saved what you spent on the phone.

I spoke to Orange last night about the Orange home page, they said they are currently reviewing the use of the home page. They said if they decide to remove it they will post an update on the Orange website to remove the software (not sure this is possible but that's what they said).

So now's your chance to get rid of this software, ring up Customer Support and complain about the home page, if enough people complain, then they will have to sit up an listen (famous last words)!!

They have no ETA of when the update to the software will be available from Nokia!

Be warned of website offering reflashing as they are unable to do this until the update is released.

@mark313

after the debrand, the only thing you have to do is to download the WAP / MMS settings from orange world, then the phone will work the same as before

@Markboyd
yes, for technical aspect, I must admit they are a very good and well-established company

but something which I feel annoyed is they keep on copying the contents / pictures from my pages. see here

http://www.kingmobilephone.com/pages/motorola/v3x-debrand.php

COMPARE THE contents & modify the pictures (top job)

Sorry

Im either confused or Im not reading this post correctly? Kingmobiles have unlocked and debranded a number of mobiles for me, as Ben has always always provided me with a great service and a fast turn around to Northern Ireland.

I would advise anyone thinking of debranding or unlocking their mobile to use ben.

and i likewise would advise www.fonefunshop.co.uk, as a lot of my friends have used them for many phones since i had mine done, and all are happy with their timely work. The good thing for FoneFunShop is that they actually sell all the tools aswell as use them in store, so you know that they are always gonna be tooled up to the nines when it comes to servicing phones.

FoneFunShop know what they are doing and have a good reputable registered company, vat registered too which seems a rarety these days on the net

I have learnt though, that there are a lot of people playing at this, and only a few that seem to know exactly what they are doing. So i guess after looking at this that ben knows what hes doing too, unlike some web services out there who all seem to work at night from their bedrooms.

christ knows what they would do if they messed up your phone, i bet they wouldn't replace it :(

just been notified by a friend about this post. so just want to put the record straight.

we have been in the debranding and unlocking game both using and supplying the kits to do the job for years. We have many long term and end user customers who use our services and products.

They enjoy the support and service we offer on our products too. and we do not enjoy posts that make us look like theives that do not have a clue.

we are one of the UK's largest re-sellers of major unlocking tools including Smart-clip, JAF, Furious, JIC, Dreambox, NS-Dongle, Zulea USB Smart....the list goes on. so having our site images and content being stolen is a thing we have learnt to live with, so stop moaning about anyone stealing images. I will not have our name slurred through forums !!

if we wanted to take your content we would have took the lot by now, and sold it on ebay like the rest of the cloned stuff thats on there :-)

Right ive said my piece and will leave it be, kingmobile: if your content is similar to ours then it is probably because you know your stuff too. if you need anything give us a call

now all that aside, heres a note of what new firmware is available for N70, and i dont see this on kingmobiles website, but probably will if i visit it soon ;-)

i have just brought a n70 on orange and was gutted when i set a picture to my wall paper. it was distorted and massive. if i got my n70 debranded, would the wallpaper make the pictures normal size. i've noticed when i dial numbers the screen goes to how i want (a bar across the top, an analog clock, and the wallpaper down to its normal size). will debranding sort all this out.

Thanks

Dan

Is this really such a big thing?... I mean, its not as if it's pictures of her majesty the queen picking her nose, or something thats of real value is it?

I'm aware that both kingmobilephone and fonfunshop are both highly recognised companies, and I'm pretty sure ALL GSM sites liek this, especially those that sell High end unlocking/ flashing tools etc "borrow" images from other sites even if it is only a picture of a data cable/ image of a phone used to create a company logo or so on.

Not only this, but if, like FoneFunShop, you sell the likes of Multi-box etc, theres an awful lot of txt to be writing down when creating a new webpage. I'm sure many companies, large or small, all use content from the manufacturers own webpages for this alo, as well as pictures.

@Kingmobilephone How about adding a "copyright/ ©" to your web pages if your really this bothered? :)

All have left to say really is this; What ever happened to being professional about things?
