I have come across an unlocked SE W800i.

Will this work on the 3 network?

Cheers

Hya and welcome on the forum. The chances are that it would work on three. But Three would issue a warning stating that you will lose all services in two days if you do not revert to your 3 mobile

This throws up an interesting issue-

I have never felt the need to insure a mobile phone (have been on GSM networks so far), as it's expensive, and if push came to shove, I could get a new sim and use last year's handset.

But when moving to 3, this may become necessary. Sneaky!

How/Why do they do this? as long as you are paying your line rental each month what does it matter to them that you are not using the correct handset? Can they legally do this? Seems a bit off.

I understand that they subsidise the cost of the phone initialy but they do get it back as long as you pay your bills.

Also 3 are a bit patchy on this as I do know of people using their sims in other phones with no issues. Seems to me a bit hit and miss. 3 seem to fail to give a consistent message to their customers.

Reason that it applies to this case is because the phone in question is a 2g phone.

The network gets a report of customers who constantly roam on O2 - this is for 2 reasons .
1/ it can highlight network coverage issues (cell problems etc)
2/ Increased cost due to roaming agreements with O2

3UK will notify the customer that it is stated within their tems & conditions that the USim must only be used in equipment supplied by 3UK , if the customer persists in using a 2g phone then the USIM is barred and all services cancelled.

In most cases 3Uk will not reactvate the USim.

Use your USim in a 3g handset and use the correct coverage and thats a different matter.

so could you use the updated Sony Ericsson W900i (which replaces the W800i) which I believe - and correct me if i'm wrong - is a 3g handset?

Not that I'm ever gonna go to Sony Ericsson cos I prefer Nokia - I'm just curious.

I THINK THAT WE SHOULD START A PETITION TO ALLOW 3 Chips to be used in other Phones as Long as we pay the line rental why should 3 be bothered ???

See point 2

2/ Increased cost due to roaming agreements with O2

every call you make while roaming on O2 costs 3uk money so thats why they are bothered.

maybe Telefonica will do a deal with 3 regards to sharing 3G coverage & vice versa that way o2 3G effectively meets the ofcom targets without telefonica ploughing more money out after a 18 billion pound investment, they share base stations already & this gets round the merge issue of 2 3G licences- not that a merge is on the cards just yet, im suprised HWL didnt buy o2 and sell the other 3G licence at half the buying price of o2 as there would have been a scramble for it while 3UK basically went to the No1 coveted position in the UK, & subscriber numbers would be up worldwide after gaining o2's customer base...wonder if it would be a case of "welcome to our network, weither you like it or not, we like play"

I hope telefonica roots out some of the idiots that o2 employ's

PS) Expect to see redundancies, overseas calls centre's and branch closures @ o2, afterall why make an investment and not restructure & cut back?? o2 spent loads for thier presence in the marketplace I cant see Telefonica doing the same, lets hope o2 online remains as good as it is
