View Full Version : Whats the verdict on 3s mobile web ?

So you can view 3's selection of 'optimised' websites for £2.50/month for 5MB.

Are you happy with this !

1/2 a pint is better than being teetotal but what about the sites that arnt included ? 3 have asked for website nominations to be included within their approved websites for viewing on 3G mobiles !

Will this happen or are they trying to hoodwink us ?

Vote in the poll and leave as many comments as you like :)

i've been using the Mobile Web add-on for a few days now and its great. I'm a happy user of the walled garden but the extra freedom to browse various different web sites is great.

The service for the money is not to bad, but typical of three the marketing never quite give a true impression of the product. I can probably get 95% of what I want from the web sites already availiable google, msn, yahoo, yell etc. But it would also be good to pick up email other than three and some other non port 80 services!

What about those of us who would like access to the likes of Gaydar for example? How many people who would access GD would feel comfortable contacting three to ask for it be activated? How likely are three going to allow them to see that, just like the other networks do?

"3" will give walled garden access, and limit the amount of web pages you can view, but at least any pages you view will work on your mobile.

Go onto google and see how many websites aren't compatible for a mobile phone.

So far so good

How do you know how much of your monthly allowance you have used? Do you get charged per mb when you exceed the allowance?

There isn't a way to check at the moment.
And to answer the second question:

From 3: "Once your allowance is reached, access to Mobile web sites will be restricted."

samboro - i'd quite like gaydar access too - dont know if anyone else noticed, but when the list of sites was available before they actually launched the mobile web, under lifestyle there was a link called Cocktalk UK - imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be a link to cocktail uk, and the title of the link was changed later that evening. oh well! here's hoping that those of us who do thrive on naked women will one day be recognised by 3!

LOL GPM

I would imagine 3 would put Gaydar on if you text them - all the sites bar Blue Sq (betting) that I have requested have been put on so unless its Porn or is not suitable for use via a mobile then they should give the nod

I have a vague memory that ntl webmail was available on mobile web, but I cannot find any reference to it. Does anyone know if it is included?

I've not tried it but I'm thinking seriously about getting it. Seems a waste to have a 6680 with access only to 3's content.
As for Gaydar; just request it. These people probably deal daily with people phoning in to activate adult services and I know from experience it just becomes part of your day - used to be a Blockbuster peep dispensing the real stuff =D - people are less judgemental than you think.

Haven't signed up yet myself, just can't reach that £2.50 underneath the bed!

But seriously though if i went for Mobile Web i'd have to go the full hog and get MobiTV as well. :-)

Don't you think if your already on a £25 PM contract, they may as well chuck in Mobile Web for free?

O2 give you 1MB PM for free on a 19 squid contract!

Yer true, i do like the idea and if they added live terestrial channels BBC1,2 etc. then i think i'd have to jump on the bandwagon as it's moving at a conservative 10Mph.

does anybody know if there is a comprehensive list anywhere of all websites that have been approved by three? It seems that some websites are not listed in threes mobile websites page that are accessible.

hope someone knows where i can find this info

Have responded to the poll as "next to useless" as for me at least having limited access to the internet is a problem.
I use mobile net access (wireless web 56) whilst on the road (when stopped of course) :-) anyway i use the phone to access my own email server and occasionally the phone prowser to access a few mobile sites when im bored. the main use of the web is done via my 4700 PDA or my laptop if im doing some serious surfin.
I struggle to find use for the mobile sites option as its to limiting. but having said that if i were three UK i would have done the same thing as Mobile internet still struggles to get a foothold with "joe public" and the obvious reason is web site compatibility. Three are trying to get to the section of the public that would use mobile internet sites by making it a more friendly experience. whether it works remains to be seen.

As for me on the wireless web it is still limited in terms of port access (certain tupes of net access you cant use, such as Terminal services, VPN,FTP etc) but i do appreciate this is niche market stuff and will take a while for three to realise there is a huge amount of corporate money to be had in that area.

One of the simple things i like about wireless web is that at a glance (keyboard shortcut in my case) you can see how much data you have used in "my three" There have always been ways of monitoring data download on devices such as PDA's and laptops but to have it so easliy accessable on the phone iteself is incredibily useful to me as it means i can surf away without worrying about the bill. The other networks do simillar things but in my opinion not so easy to access (on voda you have to phone up and press a few keys to then get a text message)

So:

Mobile sites: No good for me but i can see why its there.
Wireless web 56: Three starting to meet my needs.

Off topic I know, sorry, but:
Naza, what settings did you use to connect your PDA? Assuming that it's an IPAQ, I'm thinking about number, initialisation strings, passwords etc, option boxes. A noddy guide would be very hrelpful. R

To initiate the phone for 3G/GPRS you need to create a connection with the following settings:

First pair the phone and make the phone the defualt bluetooth modem

create connection with *99# as the dial number
Ini string +cgdcont=1,"ip","three.co.uk" (notice there is no "AT at the beginning, Windows mobile seems to send this anyway and if you add it it stops it working
Baud rate: Maximum Should be 115200
Wait for dial tone before dialing ticked
username: Blank (i.e nothing entered)
Password Blank (ie nothing entered)

Thats it, it works for me on N70, The e1000 is a bit weird i spent hours trying to get that one working.

If you have further questions create a new topic and i will endeavour to help.

It's ok. I'd still rather 3 didn't restrict the sites on view, after all we are all aware that 3 aren't responsible for the content of external sites.

However, access to at least some sites outside the 'walled garden' is better than nothing.

From 3: "Once your allowance is reached, access to Mobile web sites will be restricted."

********! I had a casual browser thing set up so I could occasionally look at hotmail... they charged me over £350 in one month, my only half decent idea of an explanation is that someone remotely hacked my account!! after months and months of chasing 3 in India to no avail then finally getting through to Glasgow only to realise I had to raise my issue in writing. I wrote in detailing everything, on two different occasions and after all this I was still liable for the charges. I paid and all I got was a free 12-month contract on my older phone, which I didn't even have any use for due to the new contract providing me with enough allowance. To top it all off, whenever I had a problem with the phone or contract (on the free 12-month plan) I couldn't get any assistance as 3 had no record i was on this 'free' deal.

This is the largest of the vast amount of problems I encounter with 3. Even with the smallest enquiry I dread calling up customer services because they are so insanley slow and stupid. When will this change??
