I spoke to orange customer service this morning and was told that users with PAYG sims would be able to use 3G services from October.

What was more annoying was being told two days ago that I could do it now. I bought a 3g phone off ebay on the strength of that. Grrr.

If anyone knows otherwise I'd be interested in hearing...

I've got the same sort of problem, Bought my 6680 of a well know auction site on orange, it came with no sim card so i put the one from my N-Gage in, it worked but no 3G i think!
I sent my mum to the orange shop to get one of those USIM cards that they talk about in the instruction book, they said they don't sell them, you can only get them with an orange phone. I phoned orange, don't know if it was Customer service, they said they won't be selling USIM cards on there own any time in the future
The only way to get a 3G sim from orange is to by a 3G phone from them on a contract so i believe!
I'me happy with the phone but i just wish i could use ALL of it features!

I've just upgraded my 6630 to a Z500 and so have a spare USIM. Whay do you reckon Oranges reaction would be if I gave it to my mate who's bought my 6630 and he tried to register it on his account? Would they let him, since it had previously been registered to me?

I was in an orange shop a week last saturday and was told pay has you go 3g would be available from December and I would be able to buy a 3g sim card. I think all the uk shops should talk to each other and find out whats really happening with 3g.

So can you use orange 3G with a 2G payt sim or do you need a 3G payt usim? If so are they for sale yet?

Hi there, yes you can use a 3G USIM in a 2G phone, but you will not be able to access any 3G services from that phone!

JDWMobilePhones

You cannot access the 3G network from a 3G phone using a 2G sim. You WILL need a 3G USIM for that. Hope this helps!

I did 12 months on Yourplan 30 with a 6630 on 3G, then asked to be switched to JT. They sent me out a new SIM, orange in colour so am now stuck with 2G-only. On ringing Orange C/S they say they can't issue 3G sims without a handset, and the local Orange shop say that they can only sell 3G JT sims with the number pre-allocated. The Orange shop tell me that Orange 3G-enabled Sims are green in colour.

So I'm stuck with an (unlocked) 3G phone and a 2G signal.

Time to change networks I guess, if I can work out how to add Voda data service settings to my handset (I use IMAP email, currently on GPRS).

Hi,

I have an O2 3G Nokia N70 but have to use it on the GSM network because I have the standard (2G I guess) PAY AND GO O2 SIM card.

Emailed O2 to ask how to upgrade to 3G network and was told I had to buy a new mobile along with a USIM - they didnt sell USIM's separately.

Where did you get your O2 USIM from?

Would like an O2 PAYT 3G SIM for my N70 so I can use the 3G network capabilities of the phone.

Please email me if you or anyone can help, marshalmail@yahoo.co.uk Edd.

I rang the sales number off the website. Told them I wanted a 3g SIM for a new phone and they sent me one out. Once received I rang them and got all the details from the old sim transferred to the new.

BTW I think some O2 shops have them - may be worth a try

Thanks for that, are there any conditions attached? I got my O2 branded SIM free Nokia N70 from eBay (someone selling it as an unwanted upgrade).

Also, are the O2 3G SIM's Pay and Go or contract? My current 2G O2 SIM is PAYG so wanted to continue that and just have access to 3G network.

Thanks again :)

Hi,

Ok I phoned the sales hotline, eventually got through to the sales girl and she said she would send out a 3G PAYG SIM to me and I didnt have to pay anything.

Then when I got it this morning, it doesnt work in the phone ''SIM card registration failed''. Phoned Customer Service and the guy said that it was because it was a contract 3G SIM and O2 dont provide 3G PAYG SIMs on their own to go in SIM free handsets like mine without buying a mobile to go with it. I asked if like 3G contract SIMs they would be selling standalone 3G PAYG SIM's anytime soon and they said they had no plans to :(

So Im still stuck on GSM with my O2 N70.

DaveC

SIM Card registration failed because the details of your old sim have to be transferred to the new one.
Ring up and choose the option for upgrade. Thell then you have a 3g sim and need your present details transferring. They will need the number printed on the new sim

So O2 don't do 3G PAYG SIMS - ask then to explain what's sitting in my phone right now

Just found the paperwork that came with my sim it's described as:-
ONLINE 3G PREPAY SIM

If you got paperwork with yours, it may be worth giving it a check

Yeah the guy said it was a contract SIM because the invoice had it as '3G POSTPAY SIM'. Which is weird because I asked to send out a 3G Pay And Go SIM!? lol

So how do I upgrade or cant I with this one? How can I get hold of the SIM youve got?

Also though, I didnt get my phone from O2 but got it as a SIM free O2 branded upgrade from eBay.

Well the part number is 23GOPSMN if that is of use.

Ring them up and say they have sent the wrong type and quote the part number. It should then come up on their computer.

My phone was not from O2 either

Obviously changed policy then. Mind you there is not much of an advantage to having one, seeing that payg data is wap only.
Might be worth trying an O2 shop. I know some were sent out to them.

Yeah thats annoying, want 3G for the benefits it has. How long ago did you get yours? Ill try an O2 shop, not sure what to do if that doesnt work out. Its frustrating because I had it easily on Vodafone as part of the PAY AS YOU TALK SIM but Vodafone seriously suck customer wise so....

I am on orange PAYG now and have just bought a 3G Nokia 6630 on ebay. I made a few enguiries at the local Orange shop and was told that all I would need to do when the phone arrived (it hasn't arrived yet so I can't verify this) is phone Orange customer service and they would have to text out a couple of SIM updates and I would be able to use 3G. No new or special SIM card would be needed she claimed.

I am completely new to this but does this sound likely to work?

Orange us different sims on 2G and 3G unless you already have a 3G sim, you will have to try to get orange or an orange shop to swap your 2G sim or sell you a 3G sim.

hi can you guys help me.. i am currently with 3 my mum ordered me a contract in her name as i am under 18, i would like to switch to orange pay as you go when my contact expires can you tell me how to get hold of a orange 3g sim card as my 3 3g phone is unlocked.

another question is will i have a problem porting my number across and how do i do this as the contract is in my mums name but the pay and go will be in my name?

mykiemm
30-06-2006, 06:47 PM
You need to go to an Orange shop and ask for a 3G USIM, they are £5.

Your mum will need to call 3CS to request the PAC code, then you just need to call Orange CS and give them the PAC code. The transfer will take 7 days, and it doesnt matter that they are in different names.

Its easier if whn you get the Orange PAYG SIM you call to register your name and address, all you need to do is call 08000790006 from the phone.

Wow what a great forum! I've just (finallly) managed to unlock my 3 LG U880 and am using it with my old Orange 2G Pay As You Go SIM card with no problems.

I came on here to see if it would be possible to get 3G services too and I think the previous post sorta answers that for me..

I'd like to keep using my current Orange number on the LG handset and also have the 3G services too. So all I need is a new Orange 3G PAYG SIM and I can get the telephone number transferred across from my old 2G one as described above. And it'll only cost a fiver for the new 3G SIM - no extra charges etc.. is that right?

THANKS!

Welcome to the forum benj!

When transferring your number from 2g to 3g on Orange, it should only take 5 mins, when you register the new card just let them know that you want to keep your old number.

I'm new to this data stuff, however a friend has been using an ordinary Nokia handset with GPRS via the Orange pay as you go £1 for 24 hours data feature (Orange World?) that can be accessed on a pay as you go phone by ringing 450 and going via menu 3.

I have an ordinary (non GPRS) Orange pay as you go phone and would like occasional access to the web, which by swapping the phone for a GPRS one seems I could do. Would the same SIM card work in one of those 3G/GPRS data cards if "topped up" in an ordinary phone? As I only have occasional need for data access and then it's a pretty low data rate requirement (1 to 2 KB of text every few minutes or so), I didn't want to go for anything expensive.

Thanks for any hints and tips.

I've answered my own question by going to the local Orange phone shop. The info might be of use to others, so here goes:

1. "Orange World" is only limited access to selected web sites, hence the deal of £1 for up to 24 hours access on pay as you go via GPRS.
2. For £5 you can buy a 3G/GPRS pay as you go SIM card from an Orange shop.
3. An ordinary phone SIM card, even when set up for GPRS, will not work in one of the Cardbus/PCMCIA laptop cards. You need a proper 3G card to work.

So, bottom line is what I had planned to do doesn't look viable.

There are non 3g (GSM/GPRS) PCMCIA cards available, That will work with your GSM (non 3G) SIM card, Do a search on Google for some bargains. Incidentaly, my HP Jornada uses an ordinary GSM SIM and i have full internet access through Orange Internet GPRS settings (ie not GPRS Wap) which is included in my free monthly 1mb data allowance! Handy to know though that 3g PAYG SIMs are only £5!

Thanks for the update. I was looking at an Orange 3G/GPRS card on eBay but the bidding has gone a little wild. I've found a non 3G (but GPRS) card new from a warehouse on the web (only have 5 in stock so you will understand why I'm not saying where at the moment) which are branded Vodafone which are SIM free and unlocked. Priced at £58 including vat.

The pay as you go SIM cards from Orange are a bit expensive to use, but for what I need at just a few kilobytes per day (actual data around 1 KB/hour plus handshaking), so may be viable.

I'm assuming the Orange pay as you go deal is "OK" but with an unlocked GPRS card there may be better deals for users of small amounts of data.
