Orange France seem to have a free IM service!

This begs the question - why not in the UK????

Lots of us have Nokia smartphones with the IM software built in, but it's of no use until Orange provide an IM service. So if they can provide it free to customers in France, why not here?

(OK they would have to call it something different as Orange had a service called Messenger which was something completely different).

Time for a petition?

Personally I use Agile messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html) ... you can connect to quite a few of the main messenger services such as MSN, Yahoo, AIM & ICQ... quite good, and doesnt hammer you on the data transfer costs.. although making a mental note to check your GPRS counter would be wise ;)

I have also been using the AgileMessenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html) IM app for a while, but they have recently ended the Free version, you now have to pay. Even though it is by far the best IM app IMO for a mobile (as good as Trillian on Windows) I am left looking for some sort of free service.

I noticed the IM option on my new 6680 from 3, however there is no change of 3 offering this as they haven;t opened there network yet (although there is talk of it this month).

Does anyone one know what type of service this Nokia IM thing is? I wouldn't be supprised if its just a Jabber client, Google just entered that realm with their IM, so would be cool as it would probably support enryption too.

I believe that it is a jabber client. Certainly Orange France, who advertise this IM service specifically for Nokia Phones, use Jabber. See:

However, Orange UK seem to think that all we want is a dodgy WAP based Chatroom service, full of the usual wierdos you find in chatrooms.

Come on Orange UK, don't let your French counterparts steal a march on you!

The thing is with the IM on the network is if all your mates signup on to it too and you started talking over the IM that is lost revenue for Orange in text messages.

Its definately one of those, better for the customer, NOT for the Network.

Do france Networks offer the IM service for free, or is it a paid service?

You can use wap sites (as usual there is at least one network in each European country provides flat rate wap package). There is wap.tjat.com which enables you connect to MSN messneger or ICQ, as cheap as you can get. IM will replace sms in the future:-).

we will be getting it from next year and it may be a paid for service.

But wap.tjat.com will stay free:-)

Agile is great, i'm just tight :(

I installed MSN Live Messenger on my N80 this weekend, and its pretty good, nice crisp screen, there is nothing much in the way of features but it works. The GTalk client is pants though, its just a webpage and has to refresh to new messages.
