I want to access Transport for London WAP (http://wap.tfl.gov.uk) using my 3 handset (Nokia 6680).
I am getting the message "It has not been possible to connect you to this service."
Am I blocked from general WAP sites so that I just use (and pay) for the Three services?

Yes, unfortunately 3 do not allow you to use your handset to browse any other content except theirs, and that of a few select partners who pay 3 exhorbitant fees to be able to operate inside the 3 "walled garden" :(

As above, 3 take massive hits on handset subsidies and line rental subsidies so they have to make their money back somehow. They do it by selling games on WAP for £5 a time and charging you 25p every time you want to check if your train is arriving on time.
If they open it up then who would pay for sports alerts if you could just get them free off the BBC site!?!?

If they opened it up, then the privilege of open internet access would mean more money as you would have to pay for it. Personally I think they should have both available, if there’s no credit to go on open internet access on your phone then you should be restricted to the garden, that way people have got the choice, 3 don't loose out and everybodies happy. But no 3 don't think like that, they decide to upset 3/4 of the 3g phone population, not a good business plan in the long term.

If open data is important to you then Orange, Vodaphone or O2 will be happy for your custom.

Very few people seem to mention the free content given to us, text news etc. I think the sport/news coverage is actually very good and use it daily. I get for free everything I used to pay for via wap.
There are also very few suscessful/well known wap sites out that which the majority of people use, so in my opinion the 3 service is above and beyond the call of duty. Get an add on and you have unlimited rent games/news videos/footy highlight - Brilliant. Infact one of my main reasons after price, for staying with three, is their content.

well said. you want your cake AND to be able to eat it....come on if you want everything you will have to pay in either dearer line rental or dearer calls. I personally like the cheap calls but if data was important I would be with another network as it is I just pop another SIM in my O2 branded ie unlocked 6630 and off I go but its very rare I need to do this.

IF people are subsidising the free handsets and cheap calls on the three network, then i'd like to thank all the people paying £5 for a game and a fiver for the walled garden add on as you are all effectively paying part of my phone bill !!! :)

If its free to browse then why is there a £5 add on to access most of it ?, only a tiny part of it is free and that is just to entice you into parting with five quid per month to access more of it

what £5 add on is there to get access to the walled garden? you must be referring to the video add on or the sport add on. I browse the garden and download the odd video but I dont pay £5....you can even read the latest news for free.

But 25p for the weather, which isn't even local. 2 days worth cost me 1p on O2 this morning.
I have 3 but rarely use anything but voice. I can get most of what they offer cheaper elsewhere

o2 hasn't even been charging me for WAP.... i'm getting nervous that they're going to suddenly land me a total bill for all i've used.
I get 1MB free a month and have used an average of 5MB a month for the last 18 months with my XDA II, and never been charged a penny.
Check it out.....

Does anyone know if 3 plan to drop the walled garden wap access?
I am currently on 02 - online, and I browse several WAP site like the BBC and use IMAP email on my SE T630 phone.
I am interested in 3 and the SE K608 phone, but I am not interested in paying for what I can get for free normally.
Additionally I browse specialist WAP site like MacRumors which I assume would be blocked on the 3 phone.

If I'm not mistaken, somewhere in this forum stated that it will open up the internet access this thursday yes this thursday (1/9/05) but it is just a rumour not yet confirm officially.

Full Web Access on Three! Finally!
I've managed to have a look at the September 'Deals' pack for three and they've finally dropped the walled garden!!! Sort of...
For £2.50 each month you can 'Add Mobile Web' where you will get 5MB of access to any website you like via your handset. As Normal, access to Today on 3 & 3 Services will remain free.
(Unfortunatly, Contract customers only - but it is a start!)
Yes, you have to purchse the £2.50 up front, but bear in mind that each of the other networks charge around the same for just 1MB. Yes, again you have to commit to buying the 5MB bundle up front, but £2.50 isn't going to break most people bank accounts, you get nearly 5 times the level of content and again; It is just a start!
A new exclusive Data tariff will also be launched at £45, for which you will get 512MB of data. There's currently no data card avaialble, but the majority of existing and future handsets are compatible.
Also there are three 'Online Only' tariffs, each around the £20-£30 marks offering extra texts, etc.
Finally there's Videotalk & Text 1100 (Which I'll be signing up for!). £45 will get you 600 Voice minutes, 400 Texts, 50 XNet MMS (photo or video), 50 XNet Video Calling minutes and £5 content for ANY videos or Ringtunes via 3 Services.
A step in the right direction for three! I'll definatly be renewing both my contracts now!

Sounds interesting if it's true.
My O2 Online deal gives me 1 mb free, after that it's £2.35 / mb.
So £2.50 for 5mb is good :)
I take it this would include POP/IMAP email also?

Yup 3 include pop/imap...if u phone capable of it LOL. 3 gave customer free email to check online or thru phone. Even u can setup for your own email like gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail....etc

Just spoke with my contact again and the official line for add mobile web is "Up to 5MB access to Selected Sites". Balls.
I could cling on the the hope that 'selected' is threes' disclaimer against people complaining that they can't play shockwave, et al on their handset - but even that seems like it may be too much to hope for. We'll see soon enough.

Hey all,
You can access full web pages from anywhere , anytime on your three mobile, I do on my crappy lg 8120 , just go to your settings, click on access points, then three services, then edit.
change the APN from 3services to 3netaccess and save.
restart your phone and your away!
To access full web pages, go to wap.waptrue.ws on your mobile and download opera mini the web browser for mobiles that will shrink down any website to fit your phone, then you can go pretty much anywhere.
The procedure maybe slightly different for different phones.
NOTE: in oder to access the three service again, you may need to revert the setting back to "3services"
