Hi,

I wanted to get the 6630 on my current price plan (online 100) so I rang Vod CS. After spending 10 mins on hold, I spoke to some disinterested bloke, who told me that the price to upgrade would be £120. I asked if this was the 'best price' he could do, he said yes. Then he put me on hold, and cut me off.

I called again, another 10 mins on hold, to speak to someone else. I asked the same question - curious to see what she said. FIrst, she said the price was £100(!) so I asked for the best price again, and she said she could do it for £50! So what gives!? I guess they are all on commission? Then however, she insisted that I couldn't get the phone on my current price place, and the cheapest 3g plan she could do was £45 a month! I flatly said that I wouldn't be changing, so we umm'd and aah'd about other phones that were available on my current plan. So after I said 'I'd think about it', she suddenly says 'hang on, I'll just check with my supervisor' and lo and behold, she 'finds out' that I can actually get the 6630 on my current plan, for £50. What a surprise.

So don't be ripped off, you can probably get the phone on an upgrade for even less than £50 on your current plan.

I think it's shocking that a) you have to wait on hold so damn long each time to speak to anyone and b) Vod's upgrade staff are on some commission plan, which rips off their customers.

It’s the same with every network. They treat existing customers like scum and try to rip them off as much as possible. Just take your number to another network and get some of the excellent new customer deals. It’s not like Vodafone have any good line rental tariffs or services anyway.

I've always said upgrades are a waste of time, I always take out new contracts when I come to the end of mine and tell everyone I know to do the same. You get a much better deal that way

Yes, thats right. In eanrly all cases taking a new contract will work out cheaper. Upgrades woudl in most cases be very expensive because not only will you be paying an upgrade price for your chosen handset but you are also effectively renewing your contract. I think with all these cash back offer deals on around, a new contract will be best option!

You live and learn eh? So can I always port my number to a new contract?

its not that your renewing your contact - its more you upgrade but you can cancel your contact at any time, so if they gave you a very expensive phone for nothing on an upgrade you could cancel a month later your contract and get a brand spanking new phone for free without paying a contract, so they actually make you pay for the phone - kinda unsurprising

the only reason they give free phones on contract is because they make the money back over the 12/18 months you have to pay the contract for

Even when they force you to sign up for another 12 month contract, they give you a worse deal than brand new customers.

true there is no loyalty from the networks it is best to shop around and see whats around before you upgrade.

however u have read on the orange website that they will be putting existing customers first, well im due an upgrade soon so ill see how far their willing to go to keep me lol

I had the same problem, so i threatened to cancell the contract, they responded later with an offer for the 6630, bluetooth earpiece, and phone holder for free as long as i signed upto a 18 month contract, which is stanadard these days. Mind you, just be aware that the Vodafone 3G coverage is crap and it may be worth while changing networks.
