I recently connected up to a 3g orange data card on a £20 a month medium user package. had to avail of technical support initially as could not connect. Eventually got it up and running but have just received first bill requesting £250 for about 250mb used. After initial shock, spoke to billing and informed them I had hardly used the device. After much debate they faxed me a 44 page itemisation which showed bulk of bill relating to a continuous 8 hour period of downloading. it appears that I was logged on to Orange home page and somehow downloading without my knowledge. I have checked laptop for spyware, rogue dialling etc and have found nothing. It appears that if I connect up data card on to 3g I am being charged for downloads I am not responsible for. Weird but true! Orange have offered no explanation or help but insist I pay. I dread to see next bill as I believe the same will happen. I currently have a data card that I am afraid to use and owe hundreds for something I have not used and cannot cancel card as outside the 14 day. Anyone else in same boat?

Never heard of this happening to any poor sod before. Are you sure you don't have a virus? Try connecting your laptop to the internet and (assuming it's running Windows) try running "netstat -a" in a command prompt. This shows all the current connections and can reveal a virus/trojan. When I point a web browser at the Orange website, this is what I see:

TCP vanadium:2002 193.35.130.117:http ESTABLISHED

Also, does the client software for the Orange data card keep records of how much data was transferred? (I'd be surprised if it didn't)

Let us know how you get on with this one.

Good luck,

James.
