Etisalat will launch an advanced third-generation (3G) network within 18 months providing subscribers with high-speed mobile data services along with high-quality voice services, said Ali Salim Al Owais, President and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, yesterday.

"We are operating three switches on a trial basis and we will soon invite tenders for launching the network," Al Owais said after the graduation of three batches of Etisalat Academy students.

He said Etisalat has achieved 70 per cent emiratisation in senior management cadre and plans to recruit 700-900 UAE nationals annually to increase emiratisation levels to 50 per cent by 2005 from the present 39 per cent.

Al Owais ruled out any plans for reduction in call rates. "Our tariffs are among the best in the world. Even though we will consider a reduction as we get technology that reduces our cost," he said.

He was speaking at the graduation ceremony held at Etisalat Academy for 83 UAE national technicians who have completed the preliminary training courses of the technical and IT diplomas. Graduates who have excelled in different scientific and sports competitions during the 19-month training programme were also honoured.

The ceremony was also attended by Mohammed Sultan Al Qadi, General Manager, Etisalat Ras Al Khaimah and Chairman of Etisalat's Technical Trainee's Committee, Abdul Aziz Al Sawaleh, Etisalat Executive Vice President of Human Resources, Dr Doaa Fares, General Manager Etisalat Academy, and Younes Al Nimr, National Training Program-mes Manager.

Al Owais urged all the graduates to work hard to keep pace with all technological developments and customer care trends in order to enable them perform their future responsibilities in a highly professional manner as envisaged by President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Their Highnesses Supreme Coun-cil Members and Rulers of the Emirates.

Highlighting the importance Etisalat places on training UAE nationals in all job roles, Al Owais also commended the scientific and training reputation of the Etisalat Academy whose internationally accredited programmes have earned its graduates high skills and cutting-edge expertise.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Nationalisation Committee for its continuous efforts to enhance technical training programmes, as well as to the Etisalat human resources department for its support to UAE professionals.

Mohammed Sultan Al Qadi stressed the committee has been working collectively to make the training programmes successful.
