Hey everyone,

Ok, I know a good number of you have had problems where you're getting missed call alerts when your phone never rang. As someone else has said, Orange know about the problem, and it's something to do with the network losing the handset if it has sat idle for too long.

I also know that most of you have massive data bundles that you can't possibly use. So, here's an easy way to keep your phone active on the network, hence not missing any more calls or getting delayed texts :)

Firstly, set up your Orange.net email account on your phone. It's pretty easy to do, either via Orange World or http://setup.orange.co.uk/ (if you haven't registered for Orange's online services do so here: http://www.orange.co.uk/emailandorganise/ )

Now, set your phone to check your Orange.net account every 30 minutes. This will use a little bit of data each time... so make sure you don't get a lot of SPAM! If your mailbox is usually empty it should be harmless enough. You may wish to call Orange after a few days to check your usage hasn't rocketed. The setting you need is usually in the settings for that specific email account - on my Z1010 I can access it by going into the Messages > Email section and going to Settings.

All done - your phone will connect to the net every 30 minutes, keeping you active on the network and, hopefully, temporarily solving your problem.

I haven't extensively tested this fix yet, but over the last 24 hours I have found it impossible to reproduce the problem.

I hope that helps.

To see the day you have to bodge up a makeshift fix so that you dont miss calls.

The irony of it being on Orange amazes me , these are the guys that everybody heralds as being No1 in the mobile business but customers have to bodge things to not miss calls

Congrats Abs on the fix but should you really have to do this

You shouldn't have to - but it beats waiting around missing calls until it's been proper resolved...

Still seems to be working 100% for me, and although the problem shouldn't exist in the first place, automatic email retrieval isn't exactly a drawback. Have any of you also found it to work?

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE AT ANY COST

Just checked my usage and I'm already going to get billed loads more for checking my account every half an hour.

I can only assume an Orange salesman on commission reccommended this.

Its a shame Orange cant come up with a way of solving this problem at NIL COST to their customers.

Still its a handy way for them to make some extra cash!

This advice was issued by me.

ALL Orange 3G customers have some kind of data bundle for free at the current time. Checking your Orange.net email uses a tiny amount of data, and I have been assured by 350 that the regular checks will not cause me to go over my 50mb a month limit. Those of you with 1GB a month should have no issues whatsoever!

How did you check your usage billyboy, and how many megs of data were specifically used checking email?

I'll emphasise this, for all of you: Checking your email in this fashion transmits and receives a small amount of data each time. Providing your Orange.net mailbox is empty, this shouldn't add much to your data usage. Don't employ this method if you don't have free data included by Orange with your 3G purchase. You are responsible for how much data you transmit and receive and so checking your data usage with 350 after a few days is the responsible thing to do. If you do choose to do this, it will stop you having missed calls!

That might explain why I don't get the "Missed Calls" problem. My phone is set to check for email every 5 mins, as I use email a lot. Data usage does not bother me though, as I have to old Orange "Open Access Pack" that gives unlimited data. Used 77MB last month alone.......
