Is anyone experiencing a huge amount of image compression while looking at pictures? I am a photographer based in London and i find that when i'm on the net with the Vodafone 3G Mobile Connect card, all image formats are hugely low res.

Same problem here. I only twigged when I read a post elsewhere about AOL doing this. I'd switched to Firefox thinking it was a browser thing - but the pics there have gone lossy. Anway, AOL have the option to turn this default feature off. Don't know about Vodafone... I suspect they want to keep their bandwidth down. I'm looking for an answer from Vodafone anyway. As a designer / developer I need good quality images on the move. But I'm a bit of a quandery when I consider my site's users that may also be getting Vodafone cards.. I'd rather they saw the original images - but shouldn't content not come first?!

I just spent a frustrating few hours looking at a friends laptop because of the same problem. I didn't even know about the image compression but found out about it on Vodafones New Zealand website. Anyway, do not despair, forcing the page to refresh will download the images in full quality. In Internet Explorer you do this with CTRL-F5. Im sure other browsers have similar key combinations to perform the same thing.
A note about that in the user manual might have been nice, I thought it was down to video drivers and wasted hours! Oh well, it's solved now.

Your Pain if felt. The source of your problem is a component by Bytemobile shipped as part of the driver installation CD. Bytemobile is NOT compatible with Nortons Internet Security as well (16 Hours of reverse engineering). I have complained with my service provider and they have shutdown said compression on there network.

I called Vodafone about this -
5 separate members of their staff have now told me that they don't apply compression at all (including two who said they had checked with "someone technical") and that it must be my PC settings - not true (although not the fault of the people who clearly have been given no training).
Eventually, I found a posting on another website with a workaround - just press CTRL and refresh and the pics are rendered full size - great - but why couldn't Vodafone have told me that?

hi all,
I too encounter the same problem.
Yes, the ctrl-F5 or ctrl-shift <refresh> work for both IE and mozilla/firebird. But i realise i have to do it everytime i view any website, else all images would appear in low-res. Is there any setting that can automatically turn off "low-res images when browsing"?
Thanks.

Hi
Heres a trick which is a bit tedious but works:
Uninstall vodafone software,
Install bytemobile software.
Install vodafone software.
Uninstall bytmobile.
Connect and try.

do you know what Bytemobile changes? perhaps it can be tweaked
ive read in some forum to edit registry key

Hi
the reason why those steps need to be taken is that the software includes bytemobile optimisation. When you install software with bytemobile already installed, it takes note and does not install on top off that. So when you uninstall bytemobile, you are essentially stripping your computer off this.
Sometimes just setting bytemobile off or on low settings does not solve the problem. Just an uninstall does that.
I can only assume that the software you are using has this component installed as well. Can't see why taking the same steps won't create the same effect.
cheers

Swimfish care to share how you fixed this issue without using bytemobile?
