If you use the internet you can view news, weather, movie and video clips for free.
So why would I want to buy a 3G phone and start paying for them.
I see that Orange is offering free Sky news clips, this is a start in the right direction.
Hopefully BBC will update their WAP site for 3G phones and start offering video clips too :)
And at least Orange doesn't limit the WAP/Web content you can view to their own services.
If you want to make money you sell premium items such as:
1. Ringtones.
2. Games.
3. Football clips.
4. Short episodes (like 'Angry Kid' that 3 UK sells)
Basically charge for Stuff that is not generally free on the internet.
Can someone tell me why someone would buy a music video on a 3G phone (3 UK - £1.50 a video)
1. Small screen size.
2. Poor quality audio.
3. Expensive.
For 79p online you can buy high quality audio ie. Apple's iTunes Store

But dont Orange charge for the amount of data downloaded ?
In effect they charge for even looking at text stories let alone downloading Video clips.
Bit different than offering FREE clips ?
Happy to be corrected if I am wrong

My post is more of a suggestion, as I don't have a 3G phone yet.
My reference is more towards what 3 UK do, and what hopefully Orange UK will not do.
Can you really expect people to pay a premium for content that is readily available on the Web?
And Orange include 50mb of data a month I think, for Web/WAP use.
"And Orange include 50mb of data a month I think"
Yes they do and charge 50p per MB after the bundle runs out.

"Yes they do and charge 50p per MB after the bundle runs out."
That's an amazing rate - I had no idea. I get charged 80p/MB out of the 10MB I get from my Orange World Access pack, and I thought that was cheap.
I do think that browsing within Orange World should be free.. but then I use external WAP/Mobile sites far more than I use Orange World. Vodafone's rate of £2.35 (I think) per meg would cost me a fortune!
"That's an amazing rate"
Yes it is, and must be the cheapest rate of any network. Mind you, their web site states that when the promotion ends Orange will revert back to the Orange world access packs for data.

Ok, football clip pricing as on my handset, under "Latest Action" on the homepage:
Sky Sports News Videos: Free + data cost (~180k) (@50ppMB 8.8p)
Soccer AM Videos: Free + data cost (~1000k) (@50ppMB 49p)
Match Highlights: 50p + data cost (~450k) (@50ppMB 22p)
All looks pretty comprehensive actually, and reasonably priced - especially for you lucky 50mb-included folk (most of you!) - shame I don't like football really :D
The data charges are a bit of a 'stealth tax' - I do hope that within-Orange World browsing does become free at some point. I'm pretty sure that Orange know Orange World beats Live! hands down... they've just failed to publicise it to the same extent.

Thankfully my ADSL connection is uncapped...
Just to go back to the original post for a second - mrzippy, you say that you can access information for free that it would cost you to view on your handset. Most of the content on Orange World, like the weather videos etc, are free. You just pay for the amount of data you transfer. You pay for your Internet connection at home too, but rather than paying for how much data you transfer you pay a flat rate.
The pricing model is different because it's so much more expensive to transmit data over mobile networks. However, it's still attractive to consumers because you can't carry your PC and cabled broadband with you wherever you go. You pay for convenience, as always.

So do you just pay for data transfer if you are surfing outside Orange World, can you browse normal websites on an Orange 3G phone? Sorry I'm new to 3G!

You pay for all data transferred on Orange, inside or outside of Orange World. You can view websites on your handset, but large/complex websites wont work. You can download Java based web browsers that will help with this though. A phone screen is so small that it's better for browsing 'mobile' pages, like the BBC Mobile site.

So's my Orange GPRS connection! ;)
I've got the old Orange Access pack, shoved in a proxy address for the orangeinternet APN, and can use my 3G Z1010 via the orangewap APN and not pay for any of it. Used 87MB last month.... bring it on! :p

How do you access the bbc mobile website? I use the normal website on low grpahics for my 6630.

bbc.co.uk/mobile should do it :)

For £10 (or £5 if you're on talk and text) you can download music videos and other stuff for "free" anyway but I also don't understand why people would pay so much for a music video but if you think of how much the data charges would be to download a 3 minute video clip (which are probably about 1.5 - 2mb) it seems about right. People are willing to pay £2/£3 to download a crappy midi rendition of a song when they could just buy the actual CD single for that amount. Nobody is forcing you to download the video clips, it's just a convenience which comes at a premium.

I have just got the Sanyo s750i on orange. I'm a 3 ( ie three.co.uk )contact user and I like the free to view feature they offer.
I got the orange on pay as you go as I'm not happy with three's service in my area.
But after been charged 15p for 37 secs use of there orange world they can shove it where the sun does not shine..
I only looked at the main page then a couple into it for the free to try bits. I got a "free ringtone" but turns out I still had to pay for the data transfer, wa-kers.
I guess I will sticking with 3.
I have been told by Orange I can get the phone unlocked for only £20.00 so thats not to bad i guess
you have to make sure you have data in their contract. I am lucky i got one of the 50mb deals. I would like to renew that next time. Hopefully its possible.
