Orange retails up and down the country are eagerly awaiting the delivery of 6630s within hours.
Head office e-mailed retails and brought them up to speed on the unit. Supplies are sparse.
Good luck in getting on

And................... What is it like? would you recommend it. Would you rather have it over a V800. I am giving mine up for a V800 because of small faults with the handset.

I have a sim free 6630 and would definately recommend it! I have been using my Orange usim in the handset and it is definately one of the best handsets I have used. Browsing is far superior than on other handsets, even using on 2g the browser speed is great. Plus if in 3g coverage and your using the opera browser and opera browser accelerator it works like a dream!!!

I would prefer the 6630 to the v800. I had the v800 for just over a week but returned it. Great looking phone but thought the voda branding was too harsh plus the coverage voda show on the website and the coverage they have on the voda store systems is a big difference!!! (but thats another thread!).

I have heard that over 40k of thses phones from Orange cant be taken today because of a problem.

That problem is Orange HQ have not paired the IMEI's and SIM numbers yet so although there in stock and availible you cant take one cause u cant get past the CS team who sign u up.

This happened to 1 person i talk to on MSN and was told try tomorrow cause they were sorting it at 5pm today

Vodafone you get the video calling stand . . .

phone is great, looks a little ugly IMO, obviously running symbian its much better equipt.

WORD TO THE WISE, on Vodafone their content control BLOCKS Agile Messenger from working, a big minus so remember to switch that off . . .

Thats true that you only get a 32mb card on voda, but oh well . . .

I love my V800 for style and wow factor, the 6630 is cool and all but I wouldn't use it as my main phone . . ;)

The Voda website does say 32Mb and not 64Mb, or at least the part of the website I was looking at!

But the video calling stand is worth more than the 32Mb! The video stand costs between 55 and 60 quid!

Jon,

If you go to:-

http://www.vodafone-i.co.uk/live/phones/3gdemo.html?phone=nokia6630

And then select "features" on the left side. It comes up saying 32 Mb.

Hope you are happy with your phone. Incidentally, what do you prefer about it over the V800?

Cheers

I have seen that aswell and think Vodafone have made a mistake on the 64mb advert. Plus I have seen the Video stands on EBay for 59.99 so its better than getting a 64 MB card. You can get a 1 gig card for about 40 quid

The phone has alot more features and has a better operating system. Although I do like the cool designs of the V800 the 6630 just beats it on performance and functions.

However one problem
When I try to install Agile messenger it just says "installalation secruity error - unable to install"

Can anyone help with this?
The phone is on VOda

Except dual voltage cards aren't generally available yet so your 1gig card prob wont work

Yes I have switched it off its a network thing the content control block.

Do you get a video stand with Orange?

Do you get a video stand with Orange?

Nope - I bought it for the high speed data rather than the video calling so this isn't a particular problem for me. Surely most people that want video calling would want to be able to do it on demand though not just when they are near the stand in which case another phone may suit them better. No doubt the next Nokia will have a camera facing the right way but they will probably miss out some other key feature

Anyone else managed to get hold of an Orange 6630 from retail. The local Orange retail shop has stock of the handsets but say they cannot sell them to customers because of some fault - either software or network. I think they are mistaken because Orange upgrades are willing to send one out to me but will take 3 days to arrive at this time of year.

I got mine from the Orange shop at the train station in Manchester. They hadn't even put them on sale but there was no problem at all in buying and registering one.

The phone is working perfectly so far and it was quite cool to be listening to music, while logged on to MSN and take a couple of pictures while out for a post Christmas walk.

3G signal is not great at home so I look forward to next week when I'm in London to see how it performs with my laptop.

You cannot currently get any DV cards apart from the 32 & 64mb nokia ones. Existing cards wont be recognised so we will have to wait for the release of dual voltage cards of larger capacity.

At least the reason for the use of the lower voltage (power saving) is likely to be a valid reason for it being used in other phones so should ensure that manufacturers produce cards for it.

Have you been instructed not to sell them by Orange registrations when you try to register the handset in the shop for the customer. Orange shop here had the box on the counter, my credit card in hand but Orange told them not to sell the handset.

I guess it's probable that the reason Upgrades have said they can send them out but the shops can't sell them is that the ones Upgrades would send would be stored in a central warehouse and therefore able to have any last-minute software updates applied after the retail ones have been dispatched?

Nope no instuctions have been mailed. So were selling em! I can only assume registrations refused to release the handset was because you were doing an upgrade rather than a new conection?

Down to 4 stock now

Right then. Orange retail will not release the 6630 in Scotland, apparently there is a conflict between the Alactel 3G base stations in use in this part of the country and the Nokia 6630. They have stocks but have been told not to release them pending further instructions from HQ.

Thats very strange because I work in Sheffield and were I work 3G signal i very strong. It will never automatactly lock on and when I do a network search the phone will give me the option for 3G coverage but when I select it the phone just locks to 2G. It takes me about 6 attempts to get locked on

Maybe a generic problem with the phone

I've got the Nokia 6630 from the Orange shop in Nottingham (Victoria Centre, for the locals).

They only had 3, and when I was buying it the phone trainer kept on reminding me how much it was going to cost! I think they wanted to get their precious phones on a higher tarriff than £30 a month.

IMHO it's by far the best non-touchscreen smartphone available. The other Series 60 devices are a bit too slow for my liking, and I personally wouldn't use anything without Symbian on it either.

A bit expensive, but very pleased with the 50MB of inclusive data.

Far better than Vodafone, as I was informed by them in their shops that you can't access the full internet on their 3G! (don't know wether to believe them or not?)

The T-Mobile Nokia 6630 phone I used to have was strongly branded with their horrible pink-ness, and also the benchmark SPMark 2004 wouldn't run on it, but it's great on my Orange phone.

The OpenGL|ES implementation for 3D graphics is a good step in the right direction, and I hope to be releasing some 3D screensavers to show off with soon(-ish) :D!

I just hope that at least a 256MB DV-RSMMC card comes out soon!

Was in orange at the trafford centre just now, they're received a delivery of 6630s for sale today.

it comes with 64mb data card and no stand, price £120 on a £30 a month contract. unfortunately they didn't want to come down from that price even if i wanted extra text bundles and stuff. was very very slinky though.

Problems..yes, the OS isn't really series 60, so my first port of call Picodrive megadrive emulator don't work.

Most of the apps I've downloaded so far seem OK, but MobiLuck lucked-up (geddit?) my 6630 and I had to powercycle it. Tried it installed on mem card and phone with same result. Shame it looks like some of the Series 60 freeware out there has issues - like the man says, if the OS isn't "true" Series 60 then that seems silly.

6630 is the first Series 60 phone based on Symbian OS 8. Of course some apps are going to not work if they use APIs that have been depreciated/replaced. So it is "true" Series 60, it just a new (and hopefully improved) version with some binary compatibility issues. BTW anyone know when it'll be available on from oranges online shop?

Of course it's "real" series 60, it's just like saying XP isn't "real" windows because it won't run an old Win 95 game or something

spoke to a mate of mine at Symbian & he recons it is a series 60 and told me it should be backward compatible.

I have been debating if I should go for the motorola A1000 or the Nokia; I like them both but for differerent reasons (both running Symbian OS). Sad thing about the Nokia is the lack of video phone which makes Oranges package a bit useless!

"lack of video phone which makes Oranges package a bit useless!"

Rather have the 50MB of data each month, rather then the ability to make the odd video call. A smartphone without data access is like a DB9 without an engine!!

a_richardson99

I agree on the data over the videophone - most posts on video calling seem to hint that you use it for the first 2 weeks and never again so fast data access was the decision maker for me.

Re 6630 bugs...apart from the already reported colour changing bug, memory card occasionally being lost and the odd lockup and restart, I had quite a few out of memory errors and I found a corking error the other night. If you set the keypad tone down to silent the phone also disabled DTMF as I found when trying to navigate the menus on a call to Orange, turn ths tone back to level 1 and DTMF comes back

That's quite an annoying bug for me as I can't stand keypad tones. Will have to remember to turn them on when ringing Orange again! Am glad to hear that I'm not the only one suffering from it forgetting it has a memory card, I did fear that I had damaged the socked when originally inserting the card the wrong way up.

Got the phone. Impressed so far.

One thing. My screen seems to have inconsistent lighting. The top part of the screen edge have bits where they seem to be lighter than the rest of the screen. This is most apparent on white and lighter colours. Its like the stronger light is trying bleed into the screen slightly. I havent noticed this on a freinds 6600 for comparison.

Anyway still havent done alot with the phone.
