Range of a 3G cell seems to be rather small, and roll off very quickly. I say this after driving around for about an hour chasing strong signals and (eventually) happening upon a tower which I reasoned must have been the 3G transmitter, after approaching it from all directions. From full strength at the tower to nearly nothing I would say is less than a mile, although I didn't actually clock it.

I say this with no basis of comparison to standard GSM (2.5G) networks, mainly because I've never been interested enough to do the same experiment. What is the typical range of a standard transmitter?
