Sanyo S750
Sony Ericsson z1010
LG U8150
Samsung Z107

I know as it has been said many times you have to have a look at the phone in the flesh, But before you even do that you have to know what the phone does and if it meets your requirements.

For instance, I wish to have Bluetooth on my Phone, so this automaticaly cuts out the LG and the Samsung.

So I am left with the SEZ1010 or the Sanyo.

Sanyo has a 1.3 Megapixel Camera compared to the SEZ1010 VGA Camera.

Sanyo has a 256k Colour Screen compared to the SEZ1010 65k.

Sanyo has 64MB Memory SEZ1010 32MB

Sanyo is free compared to £49.99 for the SEZ1010

Sanyo Looks crap compared to the SEZ1010

So back to square one. Wait till its in my mitts

Whats everyone else doing ?

At this moment, none of the above.

I am angling to a 6630 so may have to wait for Jan.

However, I am fickle and shallow when it comes to brand monogamy so look out for a change of heart!

I'd advise waiting for the 6630, Walko. If you're not bothered about video calling then the 6630 will be superior to any of the current offering.

I'm going for the S750 for one reason:

The QVGA (240 x 320) screen.

This is a v. high res screen for a phone and makes a huge difference when viewing content. I have a P800 now which has a slightly lower res (208x320) screen and I would hate to drop back to a lower resolution. I don't really care what the phone looks like.

Oo well make sure you let us know what it's like! I have high expectations from the Sanyo... will be really interested to read some reviews!

Seems you've given the Z1010 short shrift on the pros and cons there, Walko!

Doesn't the Z1010 have a Memory Stick Duo slot? Does the Sanyo?

Also that screen looks purty, but also vulnerable.

Small point (and one you touched on), but when it's open and viewed straight on it reminds me of my old Nokia 5.1. Not seen one "in the flesh" though (just played with the 3d handset on the Orange website) so that may be overly unkind! :D

The Z1010 does indeed have a duo slot for up to 128MB. It comes with a 32MB card, and has a little internal memory too.

I'm sure the Z1010 will last me until the next wave of 3G handsets (I guess its you could count it as the oldest of the 2nd wave). There will always be something better just around the corner. I reckon the Sanyo and Z1010 on paper are very spec-equal, but the Z1010 will suit me better, I think.

My old NEC616 had 32 meg on board, but a certain amount was already used up. Also, the 616 would only accept files less than 3meg in size. Is there such a preposterous limitation on the Z1010? None of my mp3s are smaller than 3meg (apart from a few 1min 30sec Ramones tracks - which are encoded in vbr which the nec616 probably couldn't handle properly).

BTW there seems to be a little confusion. The Z1010 takes a memory stick duo and the sanyo takes the standard sd cards.

I've got MP3's and such over 3megs on my Z1010 - no problems so far!

SE Z1010 since it will be mostly used as a modem and I have 2G SE handsets at the moment so chargers, and accesories and software should all work without having to load new drivers and carry around different sets of chargers and stuff.

Undoubtedly the SE is most fully loaded in terms of acessories and judging by SE website, almost all accessories will work on this phone.

Cant see many Samsung's being shifted. I may be wrong (I had a T100 that was pretty cool for the time and I liked it a lot) but for people savvy enough to want a 3g phone now, it doesnt appear to offer as much as SE/Sanyo.

...the sanyo takes the standard sd cards.

Wasn't aware of that. Must admit that I haven't looked into the Sanyo too much as that screen just looks too breakable.

I can't say anything either way about the other phones, as I haven't laid hands on any except the Z1010, and I even ordered it over the phone having not touched it.

That said... although chunky, it's a very good phone. Nicely built, and "does what it says on the tin," as the saying goes. IF, of course, you can get your head around the size, which honestly isn't that bad. (On the other hand, my partner, who isn't nearly the geek I am, carries a run-of-the-mill Samsung E700, and I chuckled when I woke up and saw them sitting side by side on the night stand!) So I suppose the size is a subjective thing.

It works well as a Bluetooth modem with both my Mac PowerBook and my Windows Mobile handheld. Bluetooth file transfers to and from the phone are seamless, and I would assume that USB transfers are just as easy, if not faster, although I have not tested this function.

It doesn't seem to have a limitation on file size... my ringtone is a 4 MB or so MP3 file that I sent it from the PowerBook.

Accessories from other Sony Ericsson phones work fine, including the power connection, which is a standard SE job. Software apps should be no different, and for what it's worth, there is also a benefit to using a popular line of phones like the SE's, if you intend to use third-party applications such as Apple iSync, Salling Clicker, or other similar things. In a word, as good as it may be, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the Sanyo to be supported by those of this ilk. As much of a chicken-and-egg debate it may create, third party developers write for popular phones, and the SE's have that on their side, which was an important consideration for me, having been very happy with these benefits from a T610.

Altogether, the others may be fine, but I don't think you can go far wrong with the Z1010. (... although ... an unlocked V800 might be VERY nice ...)

Cheers,
adam

Just a point of correct about the Sanyo.

It only comes with 8Mb of RAM. It does have an SD card slot.

The 8Mb of RAM is rediculous in this day and age. 4Mb is allocated for Java apps, video and pictures. The other 4Mb is allocated to messaging and saved web pages (which it does save very well!)

Hi there Adam,

Do you happen to know what operating system is please? I was wondering if it was Symbian based? I have to say I quite like the Symbian OS - which is why I lean towards the Motarola A1000; sadly it is only available on 3 at the moment & they have this "walled garden" which stops one going onto the net.

Also wondered what applications come on the SE & if it is possible to download onter programs onto it (and if so where are they available to download?).

All the best,

Kevin

The camera is just fantastic on the sanyo, it is also pictbridge enabled. In the orange shop they are coming with a 256 mb memory card :D
