Right, I managed to get the V800 to work nicely as a modem, connecting via Irda to my Ipaq 3630. Web access is fine, as is receiving email (I haven't tried the 3G coverage yet its too weak in my house).

Whats the SMTP server for voda, so I can send outgoing emails?

It'll be programmed in the phone somewhere if you have a look through the settings.

It sounds like you're doing exactly what I've been trying to find out whether it was possible or not. I've spoken to 6 or 7 different people at Vodafone who've told me it's not possible to use a 3g handset as a modem with a laptop. 1 person there has told me of course it's possible and not to be told otherwise!

Can you confirm that you have actually connected via the higher speed 3g service rather than just bog standard gprs?

What speeds were you getting?
Thanks

Tom.

I can't confirm the speeds, but its definitely possible, just download the vodafone 'connect me' software from their website, and away you go!

I just can't get the email to work yet....

Shakes, of course you can use your phone as a modem!

Complain to the people's manager who told you otherwise, they need to be told!

I have been able to connect my Mac at near broadband speed, can't tell you the spead the VF software does not work on a Mac, otherwise go to SE's site and download drivers from there.

The outgoing server is

send.vodafone.net

Thanks Jon, thats got it working now. The vodafone software is connecting via the aliceconnect program, but not the email....

How do I get the email program (outlook) to connect with the same settings as the browser?

Ahhh, sorted it now. God PPC isn't half complicated!

Anyway, I created a new connection, called sev700. I set it to 57600 baud, irda modem, username and password both 'web'. The number is *99#

I then pointed all applications to this connection (not the 'internet settings' connection in the connections dialogue). It seems to be happy now.

This means I no longer need the aliceconnect software.

Can anybody confirm this is the correct number to dial, and that it will work at 3G speeds?

No idea for PC's sounds more complex than for Macs...

I'm having numerous problems getting my PPC (RX 3715) using my V800 as a bluetooth modem. The PPC sees the phone OK. I've tried using the Connect Me software (RAS error) and also the manual settings suggested by vodafone (tries to dial out then fails). Any help would be much appreciated.

Yep, I believe so. That number tells the phone to establish a data connection: if it has 3G coverage it will be 3G, if not it will be GPRS.

The only thing is, you've set your IrDA to 57600 baud, when the phone is working at over 300,000 baud so that could well restrict you to GPRS-like speeds.

Thanks dj1471. If I upgraded to a bluetooth Ipaq, is the throughput higher? I've got the baud on 115200 now, which is the maximum it supports.

IIRC Bluetooth will allow you to make full use of 3G speeds, yes.

I had problems connecting with a Windows mobile 2003 iPaq and v800.
Set up the phone as a bluetooth dialup modem dial using *99***3# but put &FE0S=0 in the extra dial-string modem command box. The CIDs are pre-programmed in on my Vodafone V800 (3 for internet)...

Thanks Goob but it's still not working, I'm getting "Cannot connect for an unknown reason...... ". If it's not too much trouble could you please list your full configuration.

Sorry, my fault... I missed a 0 in the additional set up string.
Use &FE0S0=0

The missing 0 was the key. It now works, many thanks!

Thanks Tom, got it working!

Is it restricted to http (web) traffic? Just tried an FTP connection and it didn't like it. Also - even though I can browse http://news.bbc.co.uk I can't ping it (as I can from normal LAN connection), is ICMP (ping) traffic blocked too?

Tom.

No idea mate, although I would suggest not using the connectme software as it isn't necessary.

Shakes

Wouldn't work for some reason without at first, but just tried to dial out manually and works!

Spoke to a mate about the lack of 'ping' and FTP traffic, it appears the Vodafone 3g connection is all routed through their HUGE proxy server. Which doesn't allow FTP or ICMP. But he also recons you can connect to a different server (don't know the IP yet) which allows all traffic - non proxy.

Will update if I get hold of it...

I'm very interested to know what settings you use, the V800 is not mentioned in my modem list (only ericsson infrared), but is seen as a bleutooth device,

if you can help me out..., thanks

Right finaly cracked it

V800 working with a Ipaq 3715 via blue tooth (uk) vodafone

Pair you phone with the ipaq and set up a short cut. I take it everyone got to this stage

Then make a new setting with the following

This is PAYG (tested) or contract settings(not tested) settings

select a modem is "bluetooth dialup modem"
phone number is *99***5# or *99***3# (look below)

(the 5 is the number of the connection i want to use. In this case its prepay internet. Look at the details on you phone under "data accounts" "the account you want " "more" than "info" it wil give you the external id number.
5= prepay vodafone
3= contract vodafone

click next

the password is web and username is web

click advance

baud rate 115200

extra string details is

z+cgdcont=1,"ip","vodafone.com"

click ok then finished

You should now be able to connect with 3g on vodafone

Many thanks to the numerous sites i have compiled this info from. Each bit i got was partly there it was a matter of putting the jigsaw together

Yours
