As promised someone from Customer Services phoned me today to test the video calling!

I had a missed call at 12pm on Saturday when I asked them to test it so I'm guessing it was for the same thing and they called back at 9.30 this morning. Nice five minute call checking sound and picture quality and it went very well.

The sound quality is very good. Its a bit like a radio conversation where you must take turns to talk - if you try talking at the same time there is confusion in any conversation but with the test video call neither voice gets through! The speaker volume of the V800 could do with increasing as there was noise at my end which is to be expected when outside. I guess the handsfree would solve that if you use them but I don't.

The picture quality is very similar to a web cam video call though I didn't expect any better. You can see very clearly when there is no movement but nodding is difficult to work out! There is no blur but the frames become fragmented. When still colour, contrast, brightness and sharpness are excellent. Another comparison for picture would be war zone reporters 'live by satelite phone' - when still you get a good picture, move and hmmm...!

The call didn't drop out which was nice. I'd have liked to have tested it dropping out of 3g to 2g as it is supposed to drop the video and move to voice only without losing the connection. I doubt it would pick up video again if you moved back in to a 3g area but this is also worth testing.

I just need to talk the wife in to getting one - she's a bit sceptical as I made her buy a 3 phone and anyone who has used this forum for eighteen months will know the problems I had there.

Overall I would give the following ratings:

Sound - 4/5
Picture - 4/5

These ratings are very subjective for the Vodafone network and the video call experience as a whole.

If anyone has not received a call from CS and wants to test the video call, reply here and I'll e-mail you with my phone number.
