i have a spare mobile phone. can i use three's sim card in the phone? i heard that it wouldn't work, or even worse, may lock your phone so that u can't use any networks' sim card. is it true? if yes, how can it be solved?

Hmm, from what I know when the IMEI is recongnised to be a "Non-3" mobile phone, it locks it from the "3" Network not every network.

It wont damage your phone, or the USIM (thats a myth) but it wont work.
if it does work it wont be long before 3 realises that you have been using a non-3G handset, they will then send you out a new USIM that defo cant be used in any other phone, and a nice letter saying you are in breech of the Terms and Conditions.
