View Full Version : Some profit for 3 as a consultant

From The Sunday Times (07/11/2004):

"WHEN you are losing nearly £1 billion a year, you have to make money where you can. But it’s surprising to see that Hutchison 3G, the company behind the daftly named 3, earned £3.5m last year from providing consulting services to Superdrug. You wouldn’t think that a mobile-phone network had much to offer when it comes to organising shampoos and tampons. The answer to this riddle is that both Hutchison 3G and Superdrug are owned by Li Ka-Shing’s Hutchison Whampoa. Still a bit odd."

Makes me feel safe being with 3 3g UK as Li Ka-Shing is one of the world's wealthiest men.

Maybe 3 3g UK could offer customers Superdrug points on our tariffs :D

That information from Hoovers is useless!

Its out of date!

KPN and NTT DoCoMo bailed out nursing huge losses months ago!

3 UK is now 100% owned by Hutchison Whampoa Limited.

Thanks 3GSU for the heads-up on Hoovers - I need to delve deeper... Any suggested sites?

Obviously with Li Ka-shing being one of the worlds wealthiest men and as you point out 3 3g UK is wholly owned by Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. he can face huge losses - speculate to accumulate - sounds like NTL (my ISP) they had billions in losses for a good few years but are still going strong and are into a profit.

NTL are far from out of the woods! They need to merge with Telewest to become anything worthwhile!

HWL is a solid company. It is rich but it has it's limits and many analysts are now questioning its telecoms strategy. It has had to sell off a lot of assets to continue the 3G investment. The latest UK activity does not suggest that they are turning any corners yet, if anything they are having to spend more to maintain growth. It looks like a big battle of nerves just now but commonsense suggests that the giveaway period must end sometime as every company needs to make a commercial return.

I hope 3 don't go bust, it would be a terrible shame, these little cartoon monsters on the streets, the jellyfish unable to obtain beer, and the little girl unable to get music from her red cherry.

I do think it's an awful shame 3 needing to give away £250 phones for £44.99 and with all the network problems, meaning people are using all their resources for nothing, it's simply a waiting game until something drastic needs to happen.

Poor 3 :(

Hi motoman

I've got every confidence in Three as a company.

Three offering £250+ phones at give-away prices is marketing gimmick.

Take me as an example:
I see the offer, go buy 2 on ThreePay. I then go tell and show my parents, who are impressed and then go buy one each. My nephew sees the phone and he goes and gets one. Half my work friends have gone and got one after showing them. My best mate has also done the same.

I buy 2 contract phones from 3G Mobile Store (http://3gmobilestore.co.uk) as I now want the LG U8120. I give the 2 NEC e228s on ThreePay to my girlfriends parents. Who will now pass the word around. On and on the system goes...

Now after Christmas I bet the phones give-away will end but as the word has got around and around people will then buy the expensive ones like the a1000 as these flashy phones come into service.

I also bet that through next year Three will be in a whole lot stronger position.

I'm no business analyst by any means but I have lived long enough to know that Three as a company won't be going anywhere apart from more and more popular over time as they evolve. So get the handsets while they are going at give-away prices because it won't last forever.

Just my opinion.

I agree - honestly :D

Companies being companies that's common practice - I highly doubt some business would get anywhere without 'spin' and doing some bent deals and cover-ups. I'm pretty sure 3 (H3G) is not any different.

I'm just reading through H3G financial reports and H3G vision, development and financing... interesting !!!
